I think the biggest problem with MMOs is that they failed to adapt to modern content attention-spans and practically no game has embraced watching streamers play the game as part of that gameplay loop. When MMOs first came out there wasn’t a lot of content in the world and it was pretty expensive to be a gamer. Most kids grew up only being able to afford one or two games a year so it was common for players to replay singleplayer games dozens of times to get their money’s worth. Content was very slow back then, hell the pacing of movies were so much slower than a modern movie. So in this era a MMO became a pretty attractive proposition because it meant you could play the same game for the whole year without getting bored or running out of content. This is just not the case anymore, for one most of those kids grew up and are working now and don’t have 12 hours a day to sink into a MMO. However modern kids have been blessed with many high quality free2play games. So if a game is too much of a grind they’ll just play something else instead. This is why I’d actually support the idea of having to pay for a character (first one free) and if that character dies you have to wait like 5days to play again. A player could own many different characters and always be able to play, but if done right the game could direct players to a youtube/twitch channel they could watch until their character revives again. The fun part about this style of pointing players towards streams is that it can encourage more community engagement to enhance the social experience of playing the game, and it opens up the door for unique events to be released. If you make a small event only accessible by 1-100 then those 100people can enjoy the exclusivity of being able to find this special event or to beat it, and then the rest of the games’ fanbase can still experience to content as a 3rd party observer. I actually think MMO animes are a good example of how a modern MMO should sort of work. More effort needs to be put into creating special and unique experiences. I remember when I was a kid playing runescape the most fun I’ve had was always the special holiday themed events. There is something magical about only being able to experience something for a short period of time, or earning the right to experience something exclusive.
I think a subscription based monetization is perfectly acceptable for an MMO. Riot game could have enough alternate ways to generate revenue that they could make this price very affordable, but MMO upkeep is very expensive. I do think that subscriptions for games like these are important for longevity. I would not be upset at all if there was a monthly charge so long as the game is well made and developed.
I would be upset if the class were limited to the basic / generic naming of "Tank", "Mage", "Assassin", etc. They can go so much further with what they have in runeterra's Lore. They could layer up classes like, imagine having the "Voidlings" a class that is basically representing Kai'sa, people who merged with the void but kept their sanity (I think in LOR we see more of them). Voidlings is our base and NOW you can chose a """subclass""" who can be translated to "Tank", maybe a voidling with big armor, a "Mage", a voidling who have psychic power (it's basic but it kinda work), an "Assassin" who have the ability to warp / teleport himself at will They could go the same way for people in shurima / taliyah like having some rock weevers that can subclass into tank / mage / whatever They could even go further by having maybe 2 or 3 option for each subclass like Voidling - Tank 1 / 2 / 3, Mage 1 / 2 / 3. Maybe some classes will have less subclass because it wouldn't make sense / fit the theme I just hope they go out of their way to make classes fun and not some basic mmo naming. They have the ressources (the lore) to make something unique it'd be a shame to not bank on it (English not my first langage excuse me if I make mistakes lol)
Or they can kinda keep just the tank, mage, heal on basic to start with some subclass to unlock on playthrough via quest/challenges/special weapons for exemple you start as a tank and after a while you do a quest that gives you a void weapon to fight agains voids and become like kaisa kinda. Because else it can make it too complex to make it available from level 1 in term of geographic start point, balancing, and power feeling. The feeling to get power is very strong for players in MMO. If you have too much power from the start and always play the same gameplay on thousands of hours from lvel 1 to level max it can discourage and bored players. But if you have objectives like "okay i start with this class and at this level i can reach this weapon so i can use this spells and become this" is better, setting objectives to player can be very hard For exemple in new world if you know which weapon you wanna play you can start with the weapon asap and never change your gameplay for your whole playthrough which can be a bit borring to be honest
Im so hyped for this mmo and I really like that they are taking their time, they are only going to release a product they are 100 percent proud off, as we can see with all their games. I also love the cartoonish but still beautiful art style league and valorant have. Hopefully they find a way to make even normal mobs fun and difficult to fight, to make the exp grind and mob grind actually fun and not repetitive and boring.
"Action combat" Oh my god. If they make the TERA 2 I've been waiting for, I'm gonna devote my life to this MMO. TERA had such a good combat system that it was the ONLY MMO I could bother playing. That also means it cannot play like LoL, since LoL is targeted combat, like WoW (or GW).
I don't see this RIOT MMO releasing anytime soon. Now that Ghostcrawler, Executive Producer for the MMO and former Design Director for League, left RIOT. Sure some one else has took up the task of his role. But to be honest I have a feeling that this RIOT MMO will be ending up just like ' Star Citizen ' being in a alfa/beta stage 4 ever. Also there are way more potent MMO's in the works that will be releasing before RIOT's MMO, like Throne and Liberty (2024), Archeage 2 (2024), Aion 2 (2024/2025), Chrono Odyssey(2024/2025), Ashes Of Creation (No release yet, but seems like will be around 2026, because alfa 2 will be this year).
The classes might be very diverse. Like all warriors in every regions are different. Not only that, many mages processes different type of magic. Pitover use sciences to harvest the power of magic called hextech and use that as their weaponry, Demacia uses a lot of anti-magic weaponry, Freljord have these special kind of weapons that is so dangerous that people can die by just touching them but a few chosen ones called the iceborn can wield them. And I only named a few...There just so many different powers and weapons in this universe that I'm so curious how riot will handle this.
Personally tho, making an MMO free is not a good idea, because they'll have to come up with different ways to earn money and keep up with updates and improving the game. Which means, micro transactions and some other ways that might end up becoming pay to win. It would be much better if they make it a subscription game, and then have a store just for cosmetics/mounts. There's a reason why FFXIV is considered one of the best MMOs out there, one of them being, they're not greedy.
I think PuzzlePirates is a great example of how to do a free2play mmo. The way it worked is that most of the gameplay were jobs that you could do to earn money or items in some form. However to buy a ship, or be the leader of a ship/crew you had to spend a combination of the f2p money that is dropped naturally on the world and the premium money that can only be created by spending real money. So essentially being a captain of your own ship is kind of like a newgameplus type of mechanic where its a completely different experience compared to the main gameplay loop. They also had a currency exchange in the game where people could buy premium currency and exchange it for free2play currency. The price of the exchange fluctuated based on the market. This created the perfect balance where players with more time than money could participate in every part of the game for free without restrictions, and people with more money than time is able to skip the grinding to earn f2p currency. This method guarantees a steady flow of real money being spent on the game without having to resort to subscriptions or microtransactions. Another great thing about puzzle pirates is that there was no level grinding. Every player got ranked based on how well they were playing each puzzle, so the only grind is improving your own personal skill and earning money. This meant that a new player could become valuable pretty quickly, and to some degree the social dynamic/politics of being a member of a crew took more of the spotlight.
While Yoshi isn't perfect he does make the attempt to appeal to the audience. Though I think this Riot game has the potential to really take MMO's into a new era. Something they need drastically, that I don't think Blizzard, Square or any other studio is really capable of currently.
Even last week we got a small interview with Marc Merrill one of the founders of RIOT saying they're committed to the genre but it's going to take a while due to complexity of the game and the high bar they want to hit with it.
What I am mostly worried about is how they are gonna give access to different regions. I really hope they don’t lock entire regions behind expansions. I can accept having expansions that add new locations to the regions but I really want to visit let’s say Shurima without having to pay 30 dollars for an expansion.
@@satinkuti5875 I am not really sure what you mean by that but I feel like the game is gonna get quite a lot of hate if they lock entire regions behind paywalls. I feel like adding new locations with expansions is gonna work out better in the long run, not only cause it will save them from a ton of negativity but also because if they lock regions behind expansions will mean that when they run out of regions they will kinda come to a dead end with expansions. That kind of strategy works for games that do not have an already established world.
Riot has to be very focused on something and that is performance on as many pc types as posibile ! I my opinion not everybody can afford to play on an 1k+ laptop like me. Like League It should be trash pc friendly But also a disgustingly good looking nvidia setting for those whit good gcards
i play Wow since 2006 and i can say the nowdays the state of the game is bad. Something like 85% of the player base pref to play the classic versions of the game and this directly shows that WoW was the king of MMOs only becouse "the Warcratf lore " and 2ndly becouse lak of competition (maybe only FF14 but in my opinion its popular moustly in Asia). And if Riot's MMo have the quality and the enjoy level "near"(not the same but to become 1st Competitor to best MMo game) and like you sed i think the same , that Riot will not add subscribtion. This will automaticlly destroy Wow and blizz/xbox. I canceled my sub in 2020 , since then I play only OW (OW by itself is the same sh*t) and if Xbox team dosent do some miracle in the near feature Riot will destroy them in every game genre. I am hopeing that Riot will make better choises in development from their predecessors in this genre. Competition by two gigants in the same sector is(or hope to be) victory for the consumers
You know, I forgot to mention it in the video...but they have mentioned multiple times console support in their job listings. Though this may change, sounds promising.
WoW's been dead for like 5 years already. By dead I mean they pull the same numbers or worse than other MMOs on the market. WoW is no longer a king. It blends in with the rest so term WoW killer doesnt mean anything anymore.
I wouldn't go that far since we know nothing. But riot does have the best chances of being the WoW killer. The past mmos is nowhere as big as riot developing the game. Not only that, the lore and world building is already there way before the development even began.
Perfect mmo --> No p2w, you can solo bosses or not if its to hard but with a chance and great asset of skill and no alts requierd to gain more stuff like in lost ark :C
MMO combat does not suck. The hack n slash type of shit they put in modern mmos sucks. Just make it target based and stop trying to invent new shit. Regular attacks target based. Skill shots MAYBE.
It’s not cancelled. They shut down and scaled back a lot of teams. The only R&D team NOT AFFECTED is the MMO team. You can check my website spun.gg that has an employee tracker if you want to
Please be girl friendly and have cute feminine skins and characters in game. I hate how most MMOs have neutral animation for Male body and just reuse it for the female body.
Please just no holy trinity.. it will completly fuck queue times for pvp and maybe even pve.. just take example WoW. Most legendary game which would be better off with classes like Lost ark because queue times are major issues in wow. And they are practicly nonfixable… mmorpg with just dps or dps with some tanking or buffs but not manditory is far better imo then trinity.

While Yoshi isn't perfect he does make the attempt to appeal to the audience. Though I think this Riot game has the potential to really take MMO's into a new era.
Something they need drastically, that I don't think Blizzard, Square or any other studio is really capable of currently.
For me it boils down to 3 Main Ingredients: Combat, Traversal, Movement. If those are super awesome made its a buy if not its a bye.
Riots combat and movement have always felt very fluid and enjoyable for me. Traversal is something we have yet to see, so *fingers crossed*
I thought there would be some new things revealed since the last interview... Guess still nothing... They went silent mode :(
Tbh i don't think that Riot MMO is still in development.
Even last week we got a small interview with Marc Merrill one of the founders of RIOT saying they're committed to the genre but it's going to take a while due to complexity of the game and the high bar they want to hit with it.
basically this means that there is no active development, they are still conceptualizing ideas. Imo we should not expect anything until 2030. @@ractp
I expect a WoW clone(not a good thing). All of their games are clones of another game. I'd love to be wrong though.
ye we get to play it in like 10-15 years
What I am mostly worried about is how they are gonna give access to different regions. I really hope they don’t lock entire regions behind expansions. I can accept having expansions that add new locations to the regions but I really want to visit let’s say Shurima without having to pay 30 dollars for an expansion.
Beggers cant be choosers right?
@@satinkuti5875 I am not really sure what you mean by that but I feel like the game is gonna get quite a lot of hate if they lock entire regions behind paywalls. I feel like adding new locations with expansions is gonna work out better in the long run, not only cause it will save them from a ton of negativity but also because if they lock regions behind expansions will mean that when they run out of regions they will kinda come to a dead end with expansions. That kind of strategy works for games that do not have an already established world.
A necrit clip? Don't yall like absolutely despise him in your discord?
No not in the slightest!
Just hope that the camera is similar with what we have on lost ark... If is like on black desert or FFXIV I'll literally throw up
Riot has to be very focused on something and that is performance on as many pc types as posibile !
I my opinion not everybody can afford to play on an 1k+ laptop like me.
Like League
It should be trash pc friendly
But also a disgustingly good looking nvidia setting for those whit good gcards
I mean Riot does this with all of there games. Even Valorant is like this.
Weird flex
hehe
I want to be excited but the MMO genre has been mid af for a while now and I'm not expecting Riot to change that.
Can wait to be the best support
30yo balding gamers... why do you have to call us out like that
😎👴🏻
Rough couple of decades? stopped watching after you said that
Bummer.
i play Wow since 2006 and i can say the nowdays the state of the game is bad.
I hope it will be released also on consoles
You know, I forgot to mention it in the video...but they have mentioned multiple times console support in their job listings. Though this may change, sounds promising.
Just get a pc brother, pc > console anyways.
@@TylerGG I have, but for me, playing on console is more comfortable.
you play osrs?
I sure have, since it was released on and off ;)

First mmo that actually could be wow killer
WoW's been dead for like 5 years already. By dead I mean they pull the same numbers or worse than other MMOs on the market. WoW is no longer a king. It blends in with the rest so term WoW killer doesnt mean anything anymore.
@@XarkoCZ still substantial gab between wow and others
genshin killer
I wouldn't go that far since we know nothing. But riot does have the best chances of being the WoW killer. The past mmos is nowhere as big as riot developing the game. Not only that, the lore and world building is already there way before the development even began.
I really hope it’s like elden ring
Leaderboard system would be awesome
Perfect mmo --> No p2w, you can solo bosses or not if its to hard but with a chance and great asset of skill and no alts requierd to gain more stuff like in lost ark :C
The core question will there be poros?❤😂
action combat? yaas! as it should be now.. more immersive .. say good bye to old tab targetting.. it feels old.. on with the new and more modern
whatd u mean mmo.....im still sticking with wild rift till now cuz i dnt hve gud gming pc 😂😂😂😂😢
There is no such thing as f2p, it’s just code for P2W.
MMO combat does not suck. The hack n slash type of shit they put in modern mmos sucks. Just make it target based and stop trying to invent new shit. Regular attacks target based. Skill shots MAYBE.
I hope the game will be playable at least in late 2025
imposible they dont even start in making graphics
lmao
At beast 2030
I have high hopes for this, I hope ashes or this really hits cause the genre sucks right now
Im so tired of WOW.. please be good. I am hard to please.
it's cancelled
@@fabiolek5190 Yeah I heard something after I made that comment xD
It’s not cancelled. They shut down and scaled back a lot of teams. The only R&D team NOT AFFECTED is the MMO team.
You can check my website spun.gg that has an employee tracker if you want to
@@fabiolek5190 You misunderstood the news. The mmo is still ongoing.
I was looking for a good mmo not a anime oh well
what are you even talking about?
Please be girl friendly and have cute feminine skins and characters in game. I hate how most MMOs have neutral animation for Male body and just reuse it for the female body.
Please just no holy trinity.. it will completly fuck queue times for pvp and maybe even pve.. just take example WoW. Most legendary game which would be better off with classes like Lost ark because queue times are major issues in wow. And they are practicly nonfixable… mmorpg with just dps or dps with some tanking or buffs but not manditory is far better imo then trinity.
