    I love your quail habit, this is the only way I'm raising mine also. They seem so happy to be able to feel natural.

    Have you tried offering them sunflower sprouts (maybe in the warmer season)? My quails go nuts for them. But they probably like those solider flies even more. That's my next project...

    • @borderfarm406
      @borderfarm406  Рік тому +1

      we sprout barley, sunflower, field peas, and oats in the summer on occasion - but if I soak those grains for 24 hours, they like them just as much - have fun on your next project

      @cocosilkworm Рік тому +1

      @@borderfarm406 I'll have to try field peas and oats too. I've tried barley, wheat and rye sprouts but they only wanted those when there was nothing else in their cage.

    I have celadon quail I am new at this, so I was wondering how you manage to find the eggs and do they ever sit on a nest,?

    • @borderfarm406
      @borderfarm406  2 місяці тому +1

      sometimes they will communally lay in one area, and we will find 20-60 eggs together, other times we have small nests in the straw, or under logs, or boxes - and it is super common to have a single egg here and there in the sand flight pen area. Some of our hens go broody, most do not. We have a few males that we like and that our hens like in the quail houses, but not enough males to cause conflict. Our males in larger numbers are in our summer tractors in the back pasture, and we butcher them at 6-7 weeks of age.

      @@borderfarm406 I really like the ideal of the ground raising, my problem is I don’t know if I can butcher them I’ve never done it before and I know it’s not hard but I know me I love the little critters. lol

    Quails so cute yet some are just nasty. I'm currently hoping my gentle roo gets his sight back having had his eyes pecked . If not, he will be my inside pet until he passes.

    Wow this is interesting. I have the same dotted whites, I have them separated in breeding pens. One day I noticed my male had a bleeding foot...Next day I noticed one of the females had blood all over her side, her foot and her neck. I separated injured hen and then sat back and watched this pen closely. Discovered it was one of the females...I saw her go after the feet on several of her group. I removed her from the group. Couple day later reintroduced her and she attacked the other birds feet right away. She is not part of the breeding program any longer... she has a bad temperment so I don't hatch any of her eggs. The injured hen doing fine and back with her group. No problems now. Never saw the flipping in action but I think that was what happened with the bloody hen.

    Do you feed the quail to your dogs raw?

    • @borderfarm406
      @borderfarm406  8 місяців тому

      some yes - our quail are for eggs and meat - we also sell chicks, and consult on habitats for quail raisers

    Do you let them raise their chicks?

    • @borderfarm406
      @borderfarm406  8 місяців тому

      I only have broody hens in early spring, and only a handful. If they hatch out chicks yes they raise them, but mostly I incubate and raise the chicks in our outdoor brooder and combine with adult covey at 2.5 weeks of age. Its more efficient, and we get more chicks per hatch
