    I have been recruited by my daughter to hand raise a few small batches of quail for her. I have 4 that are 5 weeks.old and a set of 5 that are 1 week old today. I will be choosing my pick of a small group that I will keep for eggs and just as pets; I'm thinking 4 hens to 1 rooster. I have enjoyed your videos amd learnt so much!! Thank you for helping this mid 50s age grandma feel that she can raise these sweet birds successfully.

      I have 4 hens and 1 rooster and it’s going well! I had 5 hens but one passed sadly. My hens are really shy and my rooster is really friendly, but he pecks a lot lol

    Thanks for sharing this his video. Your set up has given me some good ideas on building our new quail cages. 😊

    I had a bad experience with the chick heating plate. It burned my chicks backs so I switched over to a brooder light fixture from tractor supply and a red dimmable heat bulb from lowes. I also got a light dimmer switch to hook it up to the brooder light… I already have a infrared temp reading gun.

      That is great. Raising your own food is very rewarding.

    So, may I ask why do you put a band on them? Not sure I understand.

    • @2911Homestead
      @2911Homestead  Рік тому

      That’s a great question! Banding is entirely unnecessary for raising quail. There are a few reasons you see bands in the video. The most important reason is that I had hatched quail from a handful of different suppliers and I wanted to keep track of temperament and growth of each. This allowed me to narrow down which ones to breed in the future. Among other reasons, such as tracking illnesses or injuries. When they all look the same, it is harder to see if one has recovered and gone back into the pen and is doing well, or if you need to pull them to keep them healthy. Thank you for asking.

      Sorry to say, but you got such a big yard, why keeping your animals in such tiny spaces? So sad...

    • @2911Homestead
      @2911Homestead  11 місяців тому

      @@BibiProvenceBBSmoothMusic Quail actually thrive in small environments. If you put them in big pens they will often die without tight spaces to hide in. With quail you also need to have very short ceilings or very tall (5-6 feet) or they will accidentally kill themselves by flushing. The rabbits that are out there as well are carried indoors for play time in an enrichment pen that we will make a video about one day. If you would like more information about either creature, feel free to let us know!

    How do you keep the water from freezing in winter?

    • @2911Homestead
      @2911Homestead  11 місяців тому

      We live in a mild climate in the winter but we check the water twice a day to prevent it from freezing.

    I have similar style hutch for my quail and got sick of the poop all over the ground under the hutch so I found 2 car oil drip trays that fit perfectly under the hutch , I just added a shelf about 6 inches below the floor to sit them on. Works great, we empty them once a week in the compost heap.

      We have a shelf under it, just have never put trays on it.

    I have some in the incubator now. First time with quail. Do they smell strong? Should i keep the coop far away from the house.

    • @2911Homestead
      @2911Homestead  Місяць тому

      They don’t smell at all. We have them right next to the house.
