Yasuke being a brute play style is their only choice, how were they going to explain him blending in with a group of monks walking down the road to engage the stealth mechanic 😂
It's their only choice if they believe he HAS to be a samurai. He doesn't need social stealth, his stealth should be "out of sight, out of mind", truly hidden in the shadows. But this is Ubisoft Quebec and thinking through such things clearly isn't their strong suit.

@@65firered Yasuke not being able to stealth is obvious. Samurai OR Assassin. He would have been, not just a foreigner, but an exotic foreigner for the given time and place. Even if you take his height out of the equation, he would have been one of the first Africans present in that time period.

Samurai gear, Assassin gear, nobles clothes, working class clothes or panhandling rags. Non of it matters because you can’t hide a towering foreigner amongst any of them. In my opinion, Assassin’s Creed should be about an Assassin. They shouldn’t have a brute force character like Yasuke.

Ubisoft doesnt get to frame the topics of discussion. They can throw whatever they want out there, but the $ paying customers are going to frame everything about the game going forward, including whether it is a financial success or not and there is really nothing that Ubisoft can do about it.

@@travishunstable5283 Of course gamers are the ones that will decide whether it is a financial success or not. That is probably the #1 thing that the gamers get to decide by how many copies the game sells in the marketplace. If it sells 20 million like Valhalla, its going to be a massive success for UBI, but I would be shocked if AC sells anywhere near that this time. There are too many signs pointed in the "disappointing sales" direction to be confident.

So what exactly is the issue with this game? The fact that people want this to be a 1 to 1 historical representation? Whether Yasuke is real or not he is a "mythological" character which AC has always relied on. As soon as we found out Shadows was going to have a ninja and a samurai I thought, "yeah the samurai will probably be Yasuke" it was such an obvious choice to me. It's not like they make all the Shoguns black women with obesity and pink hair? The one character they chose is a prominent character in media like wtf are people on? Just because you people want to peddle your shitty agenda?
I won't preorder (I've never bought a game in the first 3-6 months of release) but if i feel like I will have fun with the game after watching a few videos I will eventually buy it.
the idea that yasuke being so limited is a good thing is so fucking preposterous to me. at this point he has no business even being in the game, all he’s good for is being slightly better in open combat, but he’s dogshit in every other respect. should’ve just went all in with a solo female protagonist, yasuke is just an annoying distraction.

The whole point of an assassin is to execute the mission stealthy, the fact that they stick around longer should be a death wish, not "oh look, I'm gonna kill everything in my path and complete my mission loudly. Splinter Cell basically master this but in the modern times. Not even Hitman encourage a shootout and overstaying your welcome because you got graded on your clean kills. Lastly, they gaslit us, so on principle they can go touch grass!
You could do that in any AC Game after they removed the mission failed thing because people found it annoying so I don't get your point

Ubisoft should of gone with their original idea first, do Assassin's Creed in Japan using a Ninja Assassin and build off from that. Something that they should have done a decade ago. Hopefully Shadows will die just as fast as Outlaws, Ubisoft has assassinated themselves.

Ubisoft making such a baffling game, mixing up Chinese and Japanese architecture, literature and music due to sheer ignorance/incompetence and being so openly racist to the Japanese whose culture they are stealing from and not apologizing to is honestly crazy. The fact that the game will play like poor man's Ghost of Tsushima will certainly not help either.
One would think that when you spend that much cash and time on making sure not to step on anybody's toes that you would not, in fact, step on people's toes, and hard at that.
The only people I have seen positive towards this title is devs working on it, gaming jurnos and extremely zealot people on Twitter. So it does not give me the best impression when those are the ones speaking for it.
You aren’t wrong. At the end of the day though it’s a video game and most people don’t really give a shit and just care about if the game is good or not. It’s Ubisoft so the game will probably be mid but it’s kind of tiring seeing the same comments about any game before release. Not saying criticism is unwarranted but the things you are mentioning won’t affect the game at all.

Man if they just made it about Naoe I think 90% of the backlash wouldn't have happened. For example people are nitpicking historical accuracy purely because of the attention Yasuke's inclusion has caused.
Further the necessity to develop two play styles seemingly means they've half baked both - the movement and combat of both looks notably worse than the best cases from the series' previous releases.

To be fair, reducing the 'toxic' discourse surrounding this game to political discussions paints an incomplete picture.
I haven't encountered a Ubisoft game with a convincing story, interesting writing, engaging gameplay, deep combat mechanics or challenging AI in the better part of a decade.
Yes, the discourse will be negative, but just like with Outlaws there will be plenty of reasons to criticize the studio beyond their questionable political and cultural decisions.
And no, this isn't cynicism. This channel is what made me a proud sceptic, is all. Just look at Ubisoft's recent history.
Valhalla had a good story, it was just too stretched out but that game has some of the best writing in the series
Ooof....you should see a doctor. You don't want to go into sceptic shock! (It's skeptic, hence the joke). All joking aside, I don't think you can always separate a studios politics from a games quality. Too often, their politics dictate what they're willing (or not willing) to say or do in a game (which obviously impacts a games narrative). Or, when you see blatant pandering, race swapping, or other ideological aspects inserted into a game, at the very least it reminds you you're engaging with a piece of fiction. This breaks any suspension of disbelief a player may have, and will ALWAYS result in a lesser impression of a game, movie, or show compared to being fully immersed.
The problem is that, even with the shortcomings you mentioned, there are still tasteless brain rotted gaming addicts who will eat anything that Ubisoft throws their way. They are the ones who have kept Ubisoft alive all these years.

@@1_underthesunI am fully convinced that there's no such thing as "full immersion", at least not to me. Maybe I'm weird, but even though I may ignore the passage of time when I'm really into it, I'm never immersed to the point I'm forgetting that I'm just playing a video game. So Yasuke wouldn't break that flow state for me, not in that aspect anyway.
According to Ubisoy, only a 6'8"and above, LeBron looking mofo is black enough to play as a samurai. Imagine how many arrows would be in his face before he can even get close to an enemy being that bigger than everyone else.

@@ApsmneShsbshu Unlike Ubisoft they make quality games. Rockstar literally has 5 year gaps between launches whereas Ubisoft releases an AC game every year or every other year.

I think Ubisoft needs to make a new IP that's just open world adventure games. This attempt to turn Assassin's creed into an open world adventure just doesn't feel like it's working. They're not terrible, but they feel like they're being held back by trying to keep us older fans happy. Make a new open world adventure franchise, and let Assassin's creed go back to being Assassin's creed, I bet both sides would be much happier and if they just focus one, instead of trying to blend two things into one
That's something the community has been suggesting since Odyssey, but I'm sure Ubisoft will never do that because of brand recognition.
They apparently had a "sequel" to Immortal Fenix Rising set in Polynesia (which was really fun imo) but they canceled it last year

AC Syndicate also had this kind of approach (Jacob the heavy hitter, Evie the infiltrator) yet Jacob was still a competent assassin. Based on this Yasuke just cranks the hulking brute approach to 11 and makes stealth useless. I get it, he’s huge, wears a clunky, noisy ceremonial armour and sticks out like a sore thumb in a Sengoku era crowd even without all this. So might as well batter down the front door and go nuts. There’s just one problem, this is not the type of gameplay I buy an AC game for, and from what I understand you can’t just play as Naoe all the time. Even the modern AC games like Origins or Odyssey clearly discouraged open combat.
People who really want to beat up wave after wave of Japanese soldiers as Yasuke already have Samurai Warriors 6. Just saying… 😛
Personally, I won't be purchasing AC Shadows, but I must confess, I'm morbidly curious to see how it's received.
No one said you have to purchase it, just get Ubisoft+ from their site and play the game however long you want

Let me give you a glimpse. Remember Battlefield 5? Ok, but the media is 10 times worse and the devs are willing to piss off as many different cultures and countries as possible. Tack on them attacking anyone who has or will criticize the game and Ubisoft and the media running defense with gaslighting and blatant lies at every opportunity... If that sounds vaguely familiar congratulations, that just happened with Star Wars Outlaws.

Syndicate having similar feeling protagonists felt fine cause I could just go with annoying sass or pleasent cake view (back when having a cake wasn't considered a hate crime when designing characters) whenever I wanted without much thought, especially at places in the story where I outright preferred Eve's take on things and wanted to side with her approach. I could be a fine lad or a fiiiiine lass without any penalties, it was purely a stylistic choice for the most part
Shadows splitting gameplay styles creates a new problem. I play AC for parkour and stealth with rare combat sprinkled in-between, the combat many times an outright penalty for failing one of the other 2 things, having to fight my way out of a mistake. Making Yasuke the combat guy that is borderline incapable of doing the 2 things I value the most about the series while intentionally lacking certain iconography like the Leap and the Hidden Blade just makes me not wanna play as him, actively.
He seems more pointless the closer the game gets.
@@RAY_II Idk, puzzles since Origins boil down to 3 things. Throwing an explosive at something, landing a ranged attack on a lock/weak spot or pushing around heavy boulders and crates. If Yasuke is the heavy lifter then the pushing around becomes his own exclusive ability, if carrying and throwing explosives is also something only he can do then 2/3 of modern AC's puzzles/open world becomes a Yasuke activity, assuming their design philosophy for puzzles doesn't change. How instant is the changing between characters? Whether I was Jacob or Eve I could literally do anything and everything with each one. If I wipe out an entire camp as Naoi, go underground through one of their cave entrances, explore and wipe out their underground systems and I find a puzzle that requires Yasuka, do I now have to go back to some change point (similar to the persona booths in Liberation) and change to Yasuke? Or can I press a button and the Animus replaces them on the spot? Yasuke sounds both increasingly vital and a consistent inconvenience.

Based on how poorly Star Wars Outlaws seems to have done, I just don't see AC Shadows doing well at all. If it was just the kunoichi and it was a stealth focused game with no rpg elements, I would've given the game a chance. Leave the rpg making to experienced rpg developers like Larian, Ubislop.
Just play as Naoe.

@@ApsmneShsbshu this game looks nothing like Unity. It looks like Odyssey all over again with some poor attempts to copy Ghost of Tsushima. Dialogue choices and since it's the Odyssey team, most likely a skill tree with activated and passive perks to name a couple. If I want that stuff, I'll play Baldur's Gate 3. I play Assassin's Creed for the hitman-esc fantasy of investigating and stalking my target. All Shadows shows me is that Ubisoft is trying everything in it's power to push away the core audience that was there in the beginning.

I agree that if you HAVE to play both characters, them playing different is better. But i dont like the concept fundamentally. Either both will annoy me with their respective shortcomings or one is vastly better. I suspect a bit of both. Stealth will be the more fun part, parcour is ACs only real appeal, so yasuke will play worse, no doubt. They should have went with a choice like in valhalla and make them only visually distinct or with slight variations like in tenchu. And make both choices shinobi. I was looking forward to cheesy ninja shinobi outfits on a male character. I love the vibe.
The way they handled it one HAS to compare it to ghost of tsushima with the shinobi and samurai elements. And that comparison will not be flattering for the ubisoft title.

Not really, In AC 2 you had a gun that was the opposite of stealth and Ezio cam kill a army of warriors or guards in seconds. Naoe is weaker but yasuke is better in combat, the RPG games are the most financially successful games next to AC 3, AC 4 which aren't known for good stealth so that tells you Sasuke likely will be more played if most old AC fans don't care to buy it. Since it's A RPG still I think the same will happen.
@@triton5336 As it turns out Ezio didn't have throwing knives or a crossbow... or the ability to use the wristgun outside of combat.... Ezio could ONLY run around and kill guards right?
I mean surely if we ignore that Ezio alone can do both things then it means having characters restricted to one is the same situation....
@@65firered Technically yes that was the best option, kill everyone in combat. Not the only but most of the time the best option as stealth takes longer and doesn't feel urgent because how much easier combat is. In Shadows if Yasuke can't fight his way out then Naoe can sneak her way. It's a solution to balancing or creating challenges with the weaknesses the characters have for example Yasuke sucks at Stealth but it's not impossible... This makes for an interesting playthrough trying stealth only. Same thing with Naoe who is not good at combat. The devs said you can complete most of the game with either but it's easier to switch in the sense if that play style is more enjoyable for you then you can focus on that more. The idea is if you want an actually hard stealth game try using Yasuke despite how backwards that seems. Then try a combat only playthrough with Naoe. The systems are there to play with with multiple playthroughs. Now let's look at AC with a character who is a jack of all trades. Well you can't really because they are good at everything stealth and combat so there is no challenge, you could say make combat weaker well AC Unity did that and people found it annoying or frustrating that option is not viable or enjoyable because there isn't a character with that option minus the stealth so you can try a different challenge.
People say make stealth weaker but AC RPG games made that choice and people complained. You can try and balance it with skill trees but people will just unlock them all and be the jack of all trades anyway in no time. It's the idea of having two game styles in one game, a game where stealth is hard or combat is hard. Basically it's just to give challenge and different experiences. If you ask why they would do this well, AC Games have had combat since the first game but it was usually bad. Stealth had its moments but peaked in unity, and had problems as well. You can't really alienate a playstyle as a business would rather than get more people than less. If you like old and new AC this is for you. Or if you just like RPGs this is a pretty robust system that looks to give each playthrough a unique experience especially with the season mechanics. If you play the game you will see for yourself, me telling you won't give you a clear idea as playing.
The handling of Assassins Creed since the Origins reboot has been so disappointing. I actually really really liked Origins and hoped Ubisoft would expand on the role playing and the choices having larger consequences. But as time went on they just didn’t expand on what Origins started.
Shame really. Though I liked Odyssey too.
As a long time fan of the series I have pretty much given up hope for this series. I have never seen a series lose it's identity as much AC. I still remember the days when people used to say: "This reminds me of AC". Now it's the exact opposite where AC has become like every other series put together but just done worse. A big portion of the fandom is screaming into Ubisofts face what we want, but Ubisoft just doesn't care. This truly shows that AC Mirage was like a pity project. The Ubisoft execs must have heard the OG fans and tossed "old school AC game" Mirage at us to make us shut up for a bit. That's all that was. I hope some people still enjoy these games though. I am out. The unique weather system in this game looks like the best part.
I really hope they bring back guard AI like in Odyssey and Origins. It was so cool waiting till night to have guards fall asleep. And then the guards would bury the bodies haha

Ubisoft just needs to change. By change I mean their organizational structure and dev teams need to be gutted and replaced with new talent. Or they can keep on the track they’re going and be bankrupt in the next decade. It’s just sad because AC Origins is the only Ubisoft game I’ve played and I loved it, but I look at everything that they’ve made since and nothing looks to be worth my time or money.

If its like Odyssey, i will appreciate it more. I really liked Odyssey as an RPG.
And I hated Odyssey for leaning too far into the RPG mechanics and basically making the game unrecognizable as an AC game.
It also undid a lot of good things Origins did like cosmetic only armor.

As much as I like Japan as a setting, I can't support this game. You can't take historical figures and make them something they know they aren't, especially if they are playable

I would have made the male protagonist a Sōhei. They were warrior monks in classical and feudal Japan. That took me 5 minutes to come up with that. 😂

I don't like the 2 character system. My character should be OP he/she should be able to do parkour, stealth, intense combat, etc all by himself/herself. That's what it means to be an "Assassin", did yall forget the Ezio and Altair days? Why would I like a game that's restricting characters in certain aspects and forcing me to play as a certain character if I want to be good at stealth/parkour and another if I want combat??? This is so lame ong
They are combining the two player bases, the classic stealth assassins and the new combat focused odissey/valhalla warriors.

Cassandra was well received as the preferred protagonist in Odyssey if they'd just gone with Naoe they'd have avoided a lot of drama. I'm praying the game is better than Valhalla, It's a shame they waited this long to do AC in Japan when the studio is infected with activist stuff.
As long as the core gameplay(stealth, combat,parkour) is fun, I really don’t care about anything else.

My major problem right now is that there doesn't seem to be any real incentive to use yasuke. Obviously most players are going to go the sleathy/Naoe route.
Even if the roles were swapped and naoe was the brute daylight character, I'd still play as her because I only play as women in games ✌️😔

You and Joraptor are the only content creators I trust when it comes to AC games. You don't do the whole "Ubisoft bad" thing and your take on Odyssey and Valhalla reflects my own experience with those games. I love Odyssey for what it was and really didn't like Valhalla. So when you speak about AC i listen.

My first reaction upon hearing their "updates will spread to all projects/computers immediately" is that if if/when they make a huge mistake it'll negatively affect all their linked games, something they can't afford as it'd potentially ruin their already released work on top of their current games.

Shoji doors floating off the ground, SO MANY SCENES OF THE KATANA CLIPPING THROUGH THINGS, like the Saya, their hands, etc, horse walking animations sliding over the terrain, rice paddies right next to river... And all of this in trailers, which is supposed to be curated and edited promotional material made to showcase the product.
There's either a great lack of quality control or complete carelessness, Either way, it reflects what we can expect from this product. Ubisoft is stretching themselves far too thin and their games are suffering because of it. Ubisoft is just releasing failure after failure and need to concentrate on beefing up the quality of their games.
A few years ago this was anticipated with incredible excitement from all AC fans, and now most of us feel the same way about this as we do about MCU movies, just general uninterest and and watching on with but a slither of hope that their games might deliver at least some reflection of what used to make Ubisoft a talented studio with great promise.
Division 2 made with SnowDrop has great enemy AI as I recall, how did their enemy IQ plummet to the dirt in one game, lol
I also really liked Odyssey. Yes, it was bloated, as the common complaint goes, and it wasn't very Assassin's Creed-y. But I enjoyed it.
It doesn't matter what stand you're on when it comes to AC Shadows' drama, this company doesn't deserve your money. They literally told us that we should get comfortable by not owning the game. And also Skull and Bone is a "Quadruple A game." Lies after lies after lies. Slop after slop after slop. The monetization inside premium price games. And the antagonizing to gamers over and over again. Let them go bankrupt, don't support Ubisoft, guys, seriously.
I don't even care if the game is good or not, I just hope this game flops so Ubisoft goes even lower and end up kicking all the directives.
Hopefully they'll use the Outlaws system of annotating the map where a cave needs a specific character to access if you find it with the wrong one...

Does this info actually excite anyone they are doing the bare minimum it's just another assassin's creed. People need to start asking themselves what these games are actually doing new what are they innovating on to make me spend $70 on these games. If guards getting sleepy in the sun and playing as 2 different people with different play style excites you then gaming is actually dead. And the 2 dialogue options to give the illusion you actually have control over anything in the game. They could have focused on 1 character made a semi open further refine gameplay instead of wasting time filling the map with pointless side quests just to get more playtime out of people. Get rid of these pointless upgrade systems that don't end up actually making the gameplay different enough. it's not just Ubisoft some of these companies make the same game and just change the backdrop and they fool people into thinking they got a new game. they don't even try to hide it they literally put assassin's creed in the name of the game so you know your getting the same exact game everytime with very "big" changes that don't change the game. it's big 2024 do better

Great re-cap, Luke! My big concern with Shadows is that it won't have a cohesive story and Ubisoft will piece-meal the story to us via their new hub (which they have been very quiet on). I could see serving the story piece-meal > making players sign-up for a single-player battle pass > having users do the same missions in different seasons using both characters > serving the next piece-meal story line. I hope I'm very wrong and this is another Odyssey level saga!
When AJR started playing I thought my music started to play lol I was like what the hell!!
I still wished that they made this a skill tree path thing instead. Having two main character is way too ambitious, I would rather have them used that time and money to build on other things. It is an assassin's game after all, so it'd be nice if the samurai path is a branch of playstyle that the player could choose, instead of a whole separate main character.
I liked the recruiter system in Brotherhood ,you could send some on missions and a bit of a leveling system I always wondered why this wasn’t further built on especially in Origins. Hopefully they give it more love in Shadows I think it could be a great aspect.
If you are going to do a dual protagonist game then you need to fully commit and make it so that doing a quest with one character or the other doesn't just lead to the same result but you get there in a different way. The actual result of the quest should change and impact the story at large. That's the level you need to be at as a AAA game in todays gaming industry to make your mark. Otherwise why waste your time with dual protagonists? It's gonna end up being an unfocused mess, which is exactly what this series has become. It tries to please everyone and ends up pleasing no one.

the lead writers of ac shadows is Alissa Ralph, and Ryan Galletta, Alissa worked on ac odyssey, and its dlc's, which seems to be the only things she's worked on as she still seems relatively new to Writing tho I could be wrong, Ryan worked on, need for speed most wanted (additional dialog), need for speed carbon (writer), company of heroes (additional dialog), batman Arkham origins (writer) and dungeons and dragons dark alliance (lead writer), I hope this means something to someone as for me I hope the story is great but I keep my expectations low story wise for aaa games, I loved the story in D&D dark alliance (but i love anything dnd) and I loved the story of Arkham origins

Been playing AC Origins recently and I’m actually excited for another game now.
Cautiously optimistic about this game when you can filter out all the toxic noise. This game has the potential to be the best Assassin’s Creed yet. We’ve all been waiting for the Japan setting. My biggest fear is that this game is just okay and not good and that’s enough to just write it off.
Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'm just waiting for the reviews to see how the game turns out. And if they're good, I'll maybe pick it up during Black Friday.

Yaskue should not be in this game. Not because hes black, but purely because his is not real. Thomas Lockly is as much to blame for this as Ubisoft. The idea a british person who teaches law has the gaul to make up Yaskue and all of his so called deads in an English translation of his book. Then turn around and try to deny Yaskues existence at the same time in the same books Japanese translation is beyond ignorant. Ubisoft trying to claim AC is about "history accuracy", then changing their minds later is also bullcrap. This game should not exist it does not deserve to.

The Ai in valhalla is remarkably bad as well. Maybe not as bad as outlaws but running into a nearby bush is usually to confuse even the high level Templars.
They just did a Ghost of Tsushima knock off but rather having 1 MC to either choose a ninja/samurai playstyle (depends on the player want). AC shadow just made it 2 characters Yasuke for Samurai and the female is the Ninja playstyle.
This might be the first Assassin's Creed game that I actually finish.
So far this looks much better than other Ubisoft games in recent time but I wonder whether it will be good enough to turn public perception of Ubisoft and save their stock price.
