    Wobbly camera work but really informative video. The GLO makes the iPad a real GPS and that's a game changer for many! (Comments from Australia).

      I never really expected it to get this many views, it was made quickly because someone had asked me about it and the best way to send them the video was to put it here. I am glad it has been helpful for people and I probably should have re-recorded it better when I noticed it was getting watched so much. It does make the iPad a very viable tool for navigation though, and even after having redone all the electronics in the boat this year I still use it from time to time just to have another screen I can zoom in on and move around to see progress and track the route.

    Thank you Matthew! Finally I have found confirmation that the Navionics Boating app 'will' operate with a bluetooth GPS device. My new ipad mini5 doesn't have wifi, I tried tethering to my cell phone but that didn't work. Now I have a new Garmin GLO 2 on order. Thank you again.

    I use the “Ride with GPS” app to map my trips on a non cellular data iPad (WiFi only) download the trip as “offline” , the GLO connects through the WiFi , displays real time mapping with audible turn warnings and additional warnings if you program thin . I used this setup in two vehicles during a coast to coast nonstop bicycle race, signal was never dropped. I did break the route into a number of sections so the file size was kept smaller so it didn’t overload the iPad, and just in case a file became corrupted . Worked perfectly and I also mapped my return trip. For $100 I couldn’t be more pleased.

    My new Garmin GLO2 just arrived and pairing to my ipad 5 was too easy. Just confirming that all my apps that required GPS such as compass, Boat speed and Navionics 'all' work just perfectly.
    Just a note to say that the Garmin GLO 2 uses Russian and US GPS making for more accurate coordinates.

      That is Awesome... glad I could provide the information to help. It is a great and accurate setup. While I did end up upgrading my electronics in the boat, I do still use it all the time as a backup system.

    How long does it take to load up GPS on cold start?

    Navionics maps, did you download them to your iPad? What happens if iPad dies, new maps?

    Would this be a good option for walking in the street when satellites are blocked by buildings? And for just driving in a city?

    Question - does the IPad have to have WiFi or Cell? Will Navionics also plot a course and let you follow that course to the destination?

    • @parmfamily
      @parmfamily  4 роки тому

      It does not need an internet connection of any sort as long as you have downloaded the chart data in navionics to use offline. So you will need to connect to wifi at home or somewhere to update navionics and download the chart area, and then after that you are good to go. And yes if you have purchased the phone/ipad app Navionics had dock-to-dock course plotting. Be sure to enter your boat information though to ensure it does not plot through areas to shallow for your draft.

    Now accurate do you find it is? I've used android tablets and phones with their built in GPS and I've found compared to a chartplotter they seem like they update ever 10-20 meters or so and can be off by about 10 meters. That's all perfectly fine at sea, but coming into a marina or going down a river (where 5-10m is the difference between running aground) it's next to useless.
    Can this be used as a substitute in those cases?
    Also, can multiple devices connect to and use it? Can I leave it on the dash and connect a second iPad or phone to it so I can go below deck and keep an eye?

      I have found it to be dead on, possibly better than my chart plotter that now has the built in antenna rather than one on my radar arch. This was made for use in aircraft and has a multiple time per second refresh. I believe the exact rate is in their specs on it.

    Is this your airplane? I've never seen a steering wheel in an airplane.

      On my boat. While the device was developed to be used in airplanes it also works excellent for marine navigation using Navionics
