Yes, they can all be linked together. Since you want radar, you would need a ready built system, like Garmin or Foruno. If you can live without Radar (we can't) you can just use tablets and apps like Navionics and Sonarphone. They would link together through Wifi and Blue Tooth. We use a combination. Well done, and of course one question. How can you charge that old phone when it is connected to the monitor? After an all day cruise, I imagine the phone will lose its charge.
Great idea, now I just have to see if I can find a monitor that’s bright enough. I know that when I was looking at tablets they measured brightness in nits, so I’m on looking for some thing that has brighter than 600 nits, my iPhone 12 has around 800 nits and looks great but it is a little small so if I could find a monitor that had similar brightness at 15 inches or even 12 inches that would be great. Ed, you mentioned you have Wifi on your boat for navigation so I assume you have it while underway. My question is how do you get Wifi on your boat while cruising?
When I am cruising in the States, I just use my phone as a hotspot. Between my phone and Lyn's we have 50 gig available. I am thinking of adding a dedicated hot spot, like the Franklin from T-Mobile. Great idea about using your phones gps abilities. You could probably use it without wifi too. Just download the maps you need to your phone and the gps does not need wifi to work, however , with wifi it may be more accurate. Realize that all gps on phones are not equal, depending on how many satellites your phone will compare determines your accuracy. When I use to travel all over the world as an airline pilot I would use a global mapping app, such as cities to go, and use the phone without wifi or cell data to not get lost in the big cities of the world, Paris, London, Beijing, Hong Kong, etc.
It works very well. We use multiple device with different views, so we always have a second opinion on GPS location. We are big believers in redundancy!

Your trip into the bow reminded me of having to work on a 5.5 meter (transmitting) satellite dish. The "hub" was about the size of a 55 gallon drum, and it was me, a squirrel cage blower to keep the feed from freezing, the transmitter and the amplifier for the receiver. Oh, and a very greasy chain that would always jump off the sprocket if you tried to move it when it was iced up. Ten minutes to put the chain back once you finally got up in there...

Looks like a super fun job! Just an FYI, if the WD-40 doesn't work, get some stuff the is called PB Blaster! The stuff is amazing at getting rusty stuff apart! I have used it on exhaust bolts on cars from New York and they came off without breaking! Any way to get a fan blowing up into that hole to speed up the drying process? Good luck with the repairs!
100 dollars or so, you can get a brand new Amazon fire hd... ten minutes later have it hacked to android format. Easy UA-cam search, granted not your 15" screen but still nice, could always beam the screen to a larger tv.
Only thing I see is your old phone don’t you have to have that phone active on an account. I’m thinking about the same type of thing I would like 2 chart plotter screens.
Ed, your wifi on the boat can be solved by T-Mobile. Ask about their 100gb data plan for $50 monthly. It is 5G and they will sell you a 5G mifi (Inseego) for 50% off. You’ll have great service anywhere you can get T-Mobile service.

@@tryingnottosink9107 The reason I ask is that we might consider a Hatteras as a live-aboard. I do like the layout of these MY's. Of course every boat has its quirks, it's just good to go in eye's open. Really enjoy your channel! Cheers from Vancouver Island, BC.
How is the monitor in direct sunlight?
Not sure, probably bad. We do not get direct sunlight on our bridge because of the hard top.
I love the monitor idea. How do you connect and charge the phone? Or is it one or the other, charge or monitor not both at once? Thanks for the idea!
I have one of those wireless charging stations. I plan to sit it on that.
Thank you.
Ed you made me laugh, working on your windless in your PJ’s. I do some stuff around the outside of the house in my pj’s .
Might as well be comfortable!
I can’t work in my PJ’s because I don’t own any the closest I come is sweat pants.😁
they got a rasberry pi 8gb ram model out now good for open cpn. gonna be building a system myself using that. gonna use nmea 2000 and seatalk adapters as well. can setup ais as well.
I think about that once in a while. Perhaps one day.
Check also BBN Marine OS for raspberry pi4. Many free and opensource boat software packages preinstalled and preconfigured.
Thanks for the tip.
Interesting! You can see why I was procrastinating!
Dude, you have me laughing with the long hair and the PJs. On a serious note, I continue to appreciate your research. I’m in the serious stage of purchasing an 410 Chris-Craft Commander. Your videos embolden me (within reason), damn the naysayers. I’ve got skills.
If I can do it - anyone can do it!
Mom!! Theres a strange looking homeless man in pajamas stealing our neighbor's windlass!
It’s a Niuto 14 inch touch screen from amazon:
4K Portable Touch Monitor Travel Screen Second Touchscreen Extender UHD USB C Computer Gaming for Laptop 14.0 Inch 3840 X 2160 IPS Compatible with Mac,MacBook,Nintendo Switch
You may want to consider a different phone like a newer one. As phones become older the batteries don’t age well. And in extreme cases they turn in a fire risk. I would look in to a cheap new phone that is specked the same
Where did you get the holders for the 15in screens?
I didn't yet
@@tryingnottosink9107 What adapter would I need to hook up to my IPhone?
What is the make and model of the monitor?

Great idea with the monitor. I was wondering how you were going to deal with charging the battery, but it sounds like you’ve come up with a good solution. I don’t envy you when you get back to the project you are currently working on the boat. Good luck with that one, and I’ll await the next video to see how everything turns out. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy what you and Lynn produce. Great job!...Ed
We plan to give the windlass another shot this weekend. Hopefully it will go well and I'll post a video next week.
@@tryingnottosink9107 Looking forward to hearing about your success with the windlass!...Ed
Can you.get stainless steel chains and save all the rust problem
The chains are stainless. It was the mounting plates and bolts that rusted.
rust oleum rusty metal primer.....I have sprayed rusty stuff 20 years ago the stuff still sticks no peeling. use it on that winch
Hi great Idea, thanks .... If it is a Samsung you are able to use DEX and your Phone is the touch screen....
It is Samsung and I do have DEX. I just can't do Dex and the Nav App at the same time. Or maybe I haven't quite figured it out yet.
One thing owning a boat you learn daily
I’ve been in those areas of old boats before. Not easy for bigger guys like us. Lol
Hey Ed, great video but i encourage You to use gloves and safety glasses on that type of proyects
Saludos!!! Desde PR🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Saludos!
The c clip on the windless holds the chain hub down on the shaft. It probably popped out or wasn't installed correctly. Looks like you opened a big project up this time. Stay warm.
That is what I thought, but I could not find a groove for it. I have a shaft and gear box one coming, perhaps it will be more clear.
Very cool, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
So you need a spare $1300 phone. Noted. Next thing. Do you need to have another cell plan active on that phone to run navionics on it?
I just used an old phone that I no longer use. A Note 8 I think, which is basically worthless. Navionics does not require a plan.
@@tryingnottosink9107 Thank you for your content and response. Good to know. The pessimist in me figured it would
Why is this the wrong video?
Looks like a super fun job! Just an FYI, if the WD-40 doesn't work, get some stuff the is called PB Blaster! The stuff is amazing at getting rusty stuff apart! I have used it on exhaust bolts on cars from New York and they came off without breaking! Any way to get a fan blowing up into that hole to speed up the drying process? Good luck with the repairs!
I use PB Blaster as well. I sprayed the hell out of it last weekend. Hopefully it does not give me much trouble when I try to remove it this weekend.
@@tryingnottosink9107 Crossed fingers it comes apart for you.
The phone does not have to be active. I just hook it up to wifi if I need to download something.
Ed, your wifi on the boat can be solved by T-Mobile. Ask about their 100gb data plan for $50 monthly. It is 5G and they will sell you a 5G mifi (Inseego) for 50% off. You’ll have great service anywhere you can get T-Mobile service.
Stick around if you want to learn about his monitor. The first 80% I’d talking about the windlass but the last 20% is of value re monitors
I guess the only drawback is that it's not touchscreen
Lekker man Lekker
The water in the core could have frozen and expanded the core. Causing more stress on the bolts.
The bolts did not run through that part of the core. But you might be right. There might be more water damage that I did not find yet.
Lynn break out the swizzzors on Ed's Hair! it is getting out of control!
For the idea on using the note 8 to drive a Monitor that is great! this leads to many possibilities.
Ouch, that looks uncomfortable! You need to follow James over at M/V Dirona and get a good pair of Coveralls for jobs like that !
Yes, but he rocks the whole Hugh Hefner doing boat maintenance look.
Yeah, that is the look I was going for! 😁
@@tryingnottosink9107 Well, if your new look begins attracting the attention of centerfold quality women, be sure to tell me immediately. Whenever I'm working on my boat in the marina, all I ever seem to attract are old, retired guys drinking beer, who stop by to tell me how I'm "doing it all wrong."
Hope you all can sail in 2021
We do too!
