Good informative video I bought this last week with Ariel etc using iPad 7 ,,,great to see someone setting it all up etc ,,,any chance of an update to how you’re finding it
So far so good! I like seeing the AIS on my navionics and keep it on all the time. It doesn’t clutter the screen. The one thing i do like about the original Raymarine is the overlay of AIS on my radar targets which i like at night. I often have the Raymarine MFD display radar with AIS on main screen and depth on top ribbon status bar.
Do you know if you can add an NMEA compass sensor that navionics will read? It would be nice to see which way my boat is pointing on the chart. Awesome video!
BTW, some cellular iPads have really bad GPS, including my first gen iPad pro 12 inch. Location services seems to randomly pause or appear in the wrong location, side by side with an iPhone that has no problems whatsoever. Thanks for this!
Merci beaucoup, c'est exactement ce que je cherchais, c'est clair, facile à comprendre, c'est parfait. un grand Merci ! Thank you very much, that's exactly what I was looking for, it's clear, easy to understand, it's perfect. a big thank-you !
Thank you for the info, great info! I will go full tablet with Navionics and iboat to use with furno radar. Any suggestions on transmitting AIS also, with the option to turn off? thank you.
Hello Mike! Thank you for the video. I have a couple questions: Can you share with me the importance of the glomex splitter? Are you aware of any alternatives? I am in Europe and this piece is a bit expensive and difficult to source. Are you at all familiar with the Yakker? I'm working with a wifi only ipad. Thanks!
The splitter is directly proportional to the signal strength so it will reduce signal strength by 3db or 1/2 if you don’t find an active splitter, which would affect range. You can try initially without and add one if not adequate. Your vhf radio range strength will also decrease. I’ve not researched other active splitters but should not be too hard to find. Good luck
Or you could have dedicated antennae and no splitter that can break taking out both your ais and VHF ..... also extra redundancy because you have 2 Arials ...and of course no signal strength reduction.
Yes, still use it regularly. Have since also added a Samsung tracker with built in gps and use it as a second navigation screen at a different zoom level, and connect it to the quark for AIS along with the ipad. The quark will connect multiple devices including my iPhone.
Hi Mike! Me again. I finally got to my boat and discovered that it already has a splitter and that sends data to the CTRX transponder which send data to the vesper marine watchmate. Is there a way to ty this into the system without losing the transponder?
I don't know the answer to this question. However I would think there is a way by using the NMEA connections to the quark box. You should reach out to Quark or device manufacturers that make similar items.
@@eandmstern Just for anybody else looking, I contacted Quark Electric and they help me solve this. Used the NMEA connections, however I needed to download their software to alter the input baudrate from 4800 to 38,400. Boom now I have a transponder wired into this same setup. They have other cheap products without the AIS receiver which is now redundant but I appreciate having it as a backup if needed.
How is Navionics getting your GPS location? Anything special that needs to be done in Navionics to use wifi GPS vs Bluetooth Bad Elf GPS? What GPS antenna are you using?
G'day Mike, what own vessel information does your system display? I plan on duplicating your system for my Regulator 32. My Northstar 6000i LCD gave out and I need an alternative. I intend to use Seaiq software and all of the Northstar peripherals are functioning well, I just cant see them through the LCD.
There is no AIS information on my own vessel if that is the question since I’m only receiving. Navionics does show your own vessel on the chart like a normal chart plotter so you can see the other AIS targets relative to your position. Maybe I’m not understanding the question.
So...do you need a vhf with ais already or will any cheap radio work ? My tablet with navionics already has a build it GPS do I still need the external GPS? Thanks for your video.
Hello Brian, No you do not need a VHF with AIS. The Quark box takes the VHF signal (the same one you're feeding your VHF) via an active antenna splitter. That signal is then processed by the quark box. Since your tablet already has the GPS built-in, you can forego adding the GPS antenna that I did. -Mike
I don’t know the axiom plotter but even if it can’t take the wifi output it should be able to a hardwire nmea output For my main plotter i use a nmea connection from my vhf which has ais built in
In tablets Galaxy ,already biult GPS ,just need to download charts e few dollars will be price , thank you for information. My plan next year to sail around the world solo .in 2023

No, I don’t know how to do that. Glad to know the video helped you.

Sorry - I don't have a recommendation for AIS transmitting. I have not researched it.
Do I need an AIS capable VHF radio to make this work or a VHF radio without AIS will work?
Thank you!
You do NOT need an AIS capable VHF.
Can you also incorporate depth Sonar ? Thanks.
Yep, via nmea
Thanks it’s a year on so this info will give me the idea of looking up a more modern version thanks for sharing Ray K. UK. YNWA.

Hi . But do you know please if I have the app navionics in my tel samsung , I may not use the AIS ??? Regards from Netherlands 🇳🇱.
I don’t know, but suspect it will work fine.

Incredibly useful. Thank you so much!
Thanks Mike for sharing!!!! Do you know of a unit that I could set up as AIS in and out?
Not sure. I didn’t investigate AIS transmit since I assumed prices would be high.
Let me know if you find something!
Great stuff. Can you post a link to that 12 volt terminal strip?
I think i bought it at west marine but don’t recall as i have quite a few hanging around for projects like this

Do you have any significant losses on the AIS receiver using the Glomex splitter?
I have not checked this with the cable prior to splitting to see what the range difference is. Something a May consider doing in future.
@@eandmstern what's the typical range of your targets?
Does it only work with the full Navionics App?
I’m only aware of the app i have: Navionics boating marina and lakes

See 2:20 for antenna.

Does it transmit AIS too?
no. Receive only.

Nice. Does this system also transmit your AIS information to others (Outgoing)
Hi Don, no this does not. The price for a transponder (which also transmits is much more expensive).
@@eandmstern Thanks
Super helpful. I am hoping to avoid buying 4K in electronics. This should help.
What are you using for an AIS transmitter / reciever?
The quark box is the receiver
There is no transmitter in this setup
@@eandmstern So other boats cannot see your boat information over AIS?
Great video. Much appreciated
Can we use this anywhere or limited to particular location?
My understanding is that AIS is worldwide running over VHF frequencies.

Hey, i don’t have a vhf installed, I have a handheld vhf. I was wondering if I put only a vhf antenna that would work.
Do I need a AIS/VHF antenna to make work or will my VHF suffice?
Thanks in advance!!
You use your VHF antenna! The AIS info is coming across via VHF frequencies. I’m sorry if I made it seem different.
Nice setup
Very useful thank you
