I came here lookin for some simple settings to help with this thing I'm doing and this cat Gabriel proceeds to offer a PhD masterclass. Amazing!! The Samson example was so freakin precise.
I used a Fender Twin for over 20 years and as i got older and my back gave me issues I finally set off on a quest to find that tone in a smaller package. Well i did indeed find that and more with the SMS Classic Tube Preamp. It has 2 12ax7 tubes in it and it nails the Twin sound and more. I have tried a LOT of SS amps out thru the years and there are very very few that truly get that tone im looking for. But with the SMS i went from having to carry around a lot of weight and a ton of extra tubes to an amp that only uses 2. But i think thats as close as im gonna get to using solid state. For power amp im using a ART SLA-1 power amp that is also small. 1U rack space. So these two devices are a total of 2U rack space. More folks who like Fender tone and are sick of carrying the weight and all them tubes, needs to check out the SMS CTP. Its one of the best hidden secrets going today. Now when i see someone moving a Twin Reverb i have to laugh, because ive been there. Yes you have the new SS Fender amps, but Fender is no longer a go to amp for me. They have tons of issues and they dont fix them. Your buying an amp that is GONNA need repairs within a few years if you use them enough. They def dont make amps like they use to it seems.
You just saved me so much time and trouble! If you're ever in Southern Nevada/Death Valley(you got a bed to crash on and lots of jamming to be done) Subscription joyfully added!
Great job. I'm 67 and a Dead head all of my life. You have a great feel for the Garcia inspired sounds they can be illusive. I appreciate the work you put in. ...idea. what about going way back like anthem of the sun where the Allman Brothers got a pile of they're riffs and I think Jerry was playing an SG and see if you can figure those early riffs when he was on a mission. Thank you very much. Darrell in Hawaii.
Wonderful Demo! Great playing and sound! Do you have a video where you breakdown all the gear and set up? You talked about it briefly here, and it would be great to see an instruction video on how to do this at home. The pedals I understand. Which JBL speakers? There seems to be a couple different models of DCM 200L amps. Great video!
its pretty hard to get the style down. Somehow you're decent at that - - - - Tone can be bought. Knowing the right notes to hit; not so easy. Great work FRIEND!
Thanks for watching Bergs! I actually tried that when i was borrowing, a little to extreme for me haha. I hoping to get my own next year, maybe ill do a more in depth video!
6:36 what is that artifacting noise clipping sound? Is that coming from your equipment or the recording/video. The gear doesn’t sound these glitches right?
Why did such a clean player like Jerry go for humbuckers? BTW I know this one has a p90 in the neck but I think I've seen him live with the triple hums.
Excuse my ignorance, What is a preamp? Does this mean you only need speakers to work with your guitar? Or you can connect this preamp to a mixer such that you don't need another say combo amp? In other words this is not a pedal? Right?
@@sprinkles-hour9719 People have found that the MC60 and MC40 sound warm and nice, but are far more expensive. I have heard many also say that the Mesa Boogie 50/50 tube amp sounds really good, but I haven't heard it personally. Most that I know believe that SS is the way to go, Jerry or otherwise. HOWEVER.... Very few SS have the warmth and clarity of a Mac, IMHO, but the Mosvalve 962 or 982 gets pretty close to the sound and clipping point of a mac. I have a Carvin ht150 as a backup rack amp. but it just doesn't have the Snap of the Mosvalve to me, and doesn't really compare to the Mac. If you are set on tube, and don't want to spend several thousand dollars, look for the Mesa 50/50
If you can get a Farm Pedals Boost of the Dead and put it before the Qtron the qtron will sing, its got a stratoblaster and a Tiger Buffer, the knob on it boosts the stratoblaster, i just use the stratoblaster with the knob a little past noon and it drives the qtron so nice
The sms is missing some of the high end and has a hair bit too much bass for Jerry. If you listen to Jerry’s board sound it’s always very much lots and lots of treble and I believe he ran bass at 0 and used the mid knob for his bass.
I’ll never understand why anyone like the dead. I’ve never heard a dead song I liked. It legit doesn’t even sound like music at all. Hopefully one day I’ll get it…
listen to American beauty or workingman's dead.. all the songs are real music..pretty tame really, but great. if you can't listen to those two albums then you definitely don't like the dead.
Dude! Your nailing it with the amp setting, the sound and the playing! Don't stop what your doing cause your spot on!
Thanks so much!

Wow!! What fantastic tone and playing! And from a humble, down to earth guy. Keep on keeping the legacy authentically alive! ⚡⚡⚡
Ha, thanks so much Bradley!

I recently got a Milkman amp in a pedal sized enclosure and this is another new way to get the Jerry tone. Def look into it.

Great playing! Really enjoyed that Help/Slip
Tone is perfect as well as playing
Thanks so much RJ, glad you enjoyed he video!
God damn that tone is killer
Thanks for watching Lucas!!
that was some great samson and delilah!!
That setup really sounds great 😃
It was David! Very very cool rig!
Thanks!!! Very interesting
Sweet playing bro
Thanks!
I'm not a guitar player, awesome!
How do you have the SMS hooked up to the Carvin and how are your speakers wired in a cab?

Sounds so good. On the SMS try bass at 0, mid at 7 and treble at 10.

Would Garica use any of the electric guitar gear while doing his acoustic playing? I'm thinking Oregon State Prison sound.
Don’t think so
6:36 what is that artifacting noise clipping sound? Is that coming from your equipment or the recording/video. The gear doesn’t sound these glitches right?
Id have to rewatch it!

coil switches , most the time they were on single coil mode

The preamp is kind the tone part. Then you’d need the power amp for to make the rig work. So it would be preamp -> poweramp -> speaker!
@@GabrielBergman95 thanks
how'd you learn about amps and all the different tones?
do you put overdrive before, or after the qtron?
Before
unless you want full tube reverb. FYD preamp pal!
Ha, I’d love to someday get one of the FYD TRP racks!
Do you think Carvin is good enough? I heard power amps are the biggest "valve" impact on the tone
i think for the application, its perfect. Especially because it only takes one rack space, easy to carry!
@@GabrielBergman95 do you know good tube alternatives to the mc50?
@@sprinkles-hour9719 no idea, honestly

Not sure
Yes, but it will sound bland if you aren’t using a power amp & speakers/cabinet sims for guitar.
I just bought a QTRON plus pedal. I just have small amp. What pedal should I get to go with the QTRON pedal?
If you can get a Farm Pedals Boost of the Dead and put it before the Qtron the qtron will sing, its got a stratoblaster and a Tiger Buffer, the knob on it boosts the stratoblaster, i just use the stratoblaster with the knob a little past noon and it drives the qtron so nice

Thanks for watching G. I agree, hopefully soon i can buy my own SMS, and well do a much more comprehensive video once i really get to dial it in.
@@GabrielBergman95 hell yeah! Love your channel very much into the same tone chase as you.. dumble/Garcia/ Mayer stuff All day!

There’s definitely a lot to digest. They cover a lot of genres. Try the Veneta Oregon 1972 Show. If you don’t like that you won’t like the dead lol
