Chasing the "Garcia Tone" | Developing the Private Stock Super Eagle II

  • It’s no secret that John Mayer’s main guitar on tour with Dead & Company has been the PRS Super Eagle, launched last spring. During the 2016 tour, PRS made Mayer a second version of that instrument with some updated woods and aesthetic appointments. Mayer played the Super Eagle II on the very last show of the 2016 tour and is continuing to play it for Dead & Company’s 2017 summer tour. PRS and Mayer are excited to offer this new version, the Super Eagle II, to fans and collectors.
“Just like with the first edition Super Eagle, you’re literally getting the same guitar that is in John’s rig. It’s been an honor to help create a tool that John can use to work with Dead & Company and beyond,” said Paul Reed Smith.

Mayer himself has said it wasnt about getting Jerrys tone. It was getting a tone that suited those tunes but also reflected Mayers style. It was supposed to be a newer sound rather than a mimic of any one jerry guitar

Odd that it's a semi hollow considering Jerry didn't play semi hollow except the Guild in the very early days. It certainly wasn't a part of the tone he was chasing. That ended with a bunch of heavy solid body guitars for him. And he loved them even though they killed his back during those longass shows.

I fell in love with PRS a little before I got my first electric and I had to have one so I got my SE as my first electric and I love it and is inspires me to play to this day. PRS continues to innovate bring these beautiful tools of artistic expression that bring out the best in you as a player whilst doubling as an art piece on its own and they are always out of reach. I'd love the opportunity to play one of these or a 594 one day, unfortunately I doubt I'll ever be in a position to own one

  • @hvymettle

Jerry was great at taking us on the journey with him while he mixed chord tones and scale tones in search of what he found pleasing to his own ear. Lots of players can replicate Jerry's sound and style. What seems to be missing is the journey, where Jerry let us listen in while he tickled his brain with tones.

  • @paulsimmons5726

PRS guitars are the electric equivalent to a fine Martin acoustic. I've owned both, along with Gibsons, Fenders, etc...
When you strum an E7 and listen to most top end guitars, you hear the E7 chord. When you strum a D-42 or one of these Eagles, you hear each string's note stacking up to make the chord...
If I were currently playing full time, I'd have a couple of PRS beauties. Their tone and playability are as great as their fit and finish, classic American craftsmanship, period!

FYI... For anyone wanting the Garcia tone, you can't get it with this guitar. Period. This is indeed a fine guitar & is for getting the "Mayer with Dead & Co tone", but there's a well known formula & specific gear needed for the Garcia tone, which Mayer simply doesn't have or use. It's just a simple fact.
It also takes much more than just the right guitar specs like DiMarzio SD II's, Onboard effects loop that Jerry used but are missing from this guitar, but the other half is very important too... Garcia also used a heavily modded Twin pre into a solid state McIntosh 2300 into JBL E-120's. A combo of all these things + right guitar specs is required for the "real" Jerry thing.
But John can rock for sure, & has a great tone going on. It's just a stretch for PRS to invoke the name "Garcia" in an effort to make money, while not delivering at all on that tone.

    • @JamTrax
      @JamTrax 7 років тому +4

Travis Elswick well that was only part of 69 and May of 70, hardly a signature tone or hard to get like later on, even though the playing itself was killer... its easy to get that tone so no "chasing Garcia tone" needed... it's the unique tone with wolf and tiger that are more desired by far for those after signature Garcia tone. The SG was a small phase but still great music. I prefer Wolf, Tiger and the Travis Bean with JGB myself.

I didn't know that about the headstock, relaxing some of the wood for when John slides his hand down and being more accustomed to what he is used to. All those little nuggets of info are fun to know... as I didn't know this. Anyway, I've seen Dead & Company and the tones John achieves with this particular "tool" are just amazing. Very sweet, smooth, creamy... and I'll say quite different than John Mayer w/ his Fender. I've seen John live several times... in the early distortion days, I was VERY lucky to catch an all acoustic show (one of the best concerts I've been to). So it was neat to see him w/ Dead because it's like he's a completely different artist, even though he's not. I do wish there was a more cheaper version of the Super Eagle.

Just watched this video and decided to go find one of these just to see what the price was. Finally found one that had already sold on Reverb LP, with a listed price of $16,754.07, and I can't find any evidence that any of them are for sale. They should have called it the Beanie Baby model, or perhaps the P.T. Barnum Special. What a crock. Look for the video of Garcia and Elvis Costello playing "You Win Again." Jerry is playing Costello's vintage Jazzmaster, and guess what? It sounds like Garcia. The production is a bit crude, but it's unmistakably Jerry. The magic was in his fingers and in his ears, not the wood or the metal.

I remember when I was a kid and was reading an interview with Garcia in one of the guitar magazines, and of course they asked him this kind of question about tone, sound, etc., and Jer responded, "I think for me, it is all in the wrist." I remember laughing at that. But ya know, it is the musician, not the instrument. Always will be.

To be honest, if JM hadn't fallen out with Fender, I'd be surprised if he didn't choose to tour with his master built strat and dumble/2 rock rig. He seems to have asked PRS to design him a guitar/amp rig that gets as close as they can to his original setup (narrowfields/coil taps and a Klon style boost).

His fender endorsements were for him to ONLY show fender amps on stage even if they were for show.
He didnt want to do that.
      So he lost all endorsements
He can use any guitar/amp he wants now
Before he got paid and got all equipment paid for from fender.
He just had to put fenders on stage. Even if using a dumble he had to have a dummy fender on stage.

Nah. Everybody wants a fucking gofundme or a bum handout these days. It's pathetic. I'll lighten up when people learn how to get off their ass and make a dollar. It isn't rocket science. I did it, so can you.

For a guy who must certainly understand the necessity for bracing a neck to keep it from bending/warping HOW HOW HOW HOW HOW is it possible to produce a video that goes out to your (at the time I’m watching this) 159K subscribers where you have collars on your shirt that curl UP into your ear canals??? Get a set of collar-stays.
If you don’t have a set of collar stays, I will send you a pair!

These guitars are cool, but it’s pretty funny to listen to this guy take a shot at “bolt ons” when his company had to recreate the Stratocaster for Johns solo gig because their standard models weren’t good enough....
criticize the bolt on all you want, but at least fender has solid quality guitars that normal people can afford.
    Rant over

I felt it was kind of a shame and hope it’s not a show of true color that John went to prs instead of keeping it in the dead family and promoting alembic a company that could use the help ... i really never understood. I would like to think it wasn’t just about who offered a better endorsement but you’ll never get that info in an interview. Well at least prs is still ran mostly by Paul even if it is big corporate... it relieving he didn’t go to fender or Gibson corporate for a deal..

It doesn’t really sound like Jerry’s tone if you ask me. Jerry had this woody.. slightly distorted yet clean sound and of course all the magic in his fingers. Guitar prices are ridiculous today who can afford this . not the mass public. This guitar is for the elite rich. You shouldn’t have to be a millionaire to buy a high quality guitar. I’ll stick to my American made strat.
