You're acting like it has never happened before in the history of the sport (asking a fighter who he's fighting next in his post-fight interview). It happens all the time! Almost every single high profile fight. It is up to the fighters to respond how they like, they could very well say, listen I just came out of camp, let's discuss this later. OR they could answer it with who they want to fight. Merab is actually answering this question every time asked (pre-fight & post-fight) and it definitely looks like he does not want to fight Umar (for whatever reason, does not necessarily mean he is afraid), and he is repeatedly mentioning Figuiredo, which is very odd. Almost EVERYONE agrees (even O'Malley), that next in line should be Umar Nurmagomedov.

@@ShawnWing-t1o Actually it happens a LOT, when the next in-line (contender) is obvious, the interviewer mentions it to get a nice response. Umar fought Sandhagen in an eliminator match. In a lot of other cases, the interviewer asks the fighter, what's next/who's next, OR who do you want to fight next. OR they would say: obviously XYZ is next in line, what do you think about that, and so on.
Everyone knows, Umar is the toughest match-up for Merab. Maybe Merab is not afraid, but he knows he has the most chance of losing against Umar. Hence he is never giving a straight-forward answer whenever they ask about him fighting Umar. That is why it looks like he is trying to duck and wants to go for other contenders so he can be sure of holding the belt as long as possible.

Just looking at the division right now shows that Merab should fight either Umar or Figgy next. He already beat Yan and Omalley, with Sandhagen losing to Umar taking him out of the run. Umar sits at rank 2 while Figgy is rank 5, I think number 2 gets it over number 5, regardless of how many fights they've had.
