Reis Magos Fort was built on the foundations of the old Bijapuri fort in 1543. The Portuguese got their best engineers to use cutting edge architectural techniques in its design. They incorporated the landscape into the layout, so the fort occupied Reis Magos hill-top and extended down to the coast. Low ramparts, angular bastions, and orillons defended against artillery. Wall-walks and curaçaos provided quick reinforcements with protection from small arms fire. The fort has an interesting collection of Portuguese cast iron cannons. They have the royal Portuguese coat-of-arms emblazoned on the barrel.
Reis Magos Church is closely linked with the fort. Both get their names from the 'reis magos' - the three wise men of the Bible. It was completed in 1555. The royal Portuguese coat-of-arms is engraved below the crucifix. The balustrade at the base of its grand steps has Vijaynagar yalis engraved on them. Every viceroy made this church their first visit on disembarking.
Reis Magos withstood the Marathas in 1739 when the rest of Bardez had fallen. However, like the other Goan sea forts it lost its relevance. Since the early 1900s it was used as a prison. A board naming freedom fighters imprisoned at the fort is in the central buildings. In 1961 Goa was liberated and the fort was abandoned. It was recently renovated as a cultural and heritage center.
