Luke Kelly and Shane MacGowan must be having a deadly session up above. A shame those 2 never recorded anything together. Would have been incredible to hear. RIP to those 2 legends
Thats almost an insult. Cant praise him enough. Luke was once off. He sang his heart out. My favourite musician btw, he had this unique way of delivering a song, hard to describe but in most cases just perfect
Luke’s amazing but Ciarán deserves just as much praise here. In every clip of The Dubliners it’s Ciarán who brings the energy, especially in the final part of this song. You can here him thumping the hell out of that guitar and backing up Luke’s great voice so proudly
I agree. Ciaran was great. He didn't sing as many songs as Luke or Ronnie, but the songs he did sing were great, Drink it up men. All for me grog. Darby o' Leary. Roddy McCorly. Mrs McGraa. Peggy Lettermore. Great songs, great singer.
This is peak luke kelly for me, the 70s were his years of pure unbridled energy towards his music. A belter of a tune sung by the best folk singer to live
I Worked With The Dubliner's A Few Times In The 1970s. Well, I Say 'WORKED', They Sang While 'I' Brought Case's Of Carlsberg Special Brew To 'WET THE CHORDS' WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL PEOPLE !!!
It must have made Luke swell with pride to sing of a possible ancestor of his playing such a heroic role in such a formative movement for Irish independence. Hats off from a Yorkshire lad with a dash of green in his veins!
I think many an Yorkshireman/Woman could easily identify with certain parts of Ireland,(Def the rural area's) But Luke was a Legendary Dublin "Jackeen" &that's why he's loved so much!..He was the real deal!
I discovered The Dubliners, a legendary Irish group, only a few years ago. Their music gives me moments of happiness. For me the historic group remains unsurpassed even if the others who came later were just as good.
It's just an expression as used here. This and similar ones used to be called 'rebel songs'. Maybe they're not any more. I was just praising a special song. Nothing more, nothing less.
I bought a record of this song (sung by Glen Daly) on April 24 1965, the day of the Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline. It was "a hymn for the dawn of the free".
My father was a huge Dubliners fan and I went with him to a concert in Eindhoven in 1996. I remember he bought the cd that was released then, Further Along❤
What a song - and what manly and confident words! A 'giant with the gold curling hair' over seven feet in height! And a band of real men to sing it, using their bass/baritones almost as weapons, true to the suffering and defiance the song encapsulates. Anyone who is not converted to Irish nationalism by the song must be named Paisley or Varadkar and have the blackest of black hearts.

What did Kelly actually do during 1798? I know how he died, when the yeos kicked his head through wexford like a football, but I've found it hard to find out what he actually did in terms of heroism or great leadership.

Imagine seeing this lad walking into a pub in the bronx 😂😂
He’s like a big ball of fire. Long live Luke Kelly.
No-one could give it some like Luke K
One of the greatest of all the rebel songs. Formidable! Barney is in good banjo voice on this as well.

@@goodmusic946 I'm not on any side. I just like The Dubliners.
I caught a late iteration of The Clancy Brothers which was grand but I regret not to have experienced The Dubliners live. Just the best…
It’s a pity we have to get old or die.... brilliant....
This is luke in his absolute prime he has unbelievable energy singing these songs an absolute legend if I've ever seen one
My favorite version of this song . Sung as only Like could sing it .

By fuck he could sing. One of the greatest singers mankind has ever produced. Glad to call him an Irishman!
God bless you Luke!
Well said!

A king in command
Love Luke, a unique treasure. Awesome he was voted the best Irish song, but I've realized it's Ronnie who's the soul of the Dubliners.
what??
They where a team.
Love the Dubliners, Luke, Kelly, John smyth
that's a lucky audience right there
beautiful!! :)
Thank you! 😊

R.I.P. Luke ..Ní fheicimíd a leithéid arís..
How many of those musicians were in control of the whole situation? Great, great great artist unbelievable captured a moment in time.
For John Kelly x
Luke Kelly's hair there, reminds me of Dill the Dog from The Herbs
Pure class
The tune was used for the "Cross of the South" a song about the Eureka Stockage rebellion in Victoria Australia 1856.
Very interesting

Luke Kelly or Billy Connolly, who was first?
So close to Bluegrass... I'm an "Englishman" because I was born there. In my heart, 'nations' are theatre. People are people the world over.
Now all our Irish heritage is being taken away.
How's that?
