Learning to Kick Start My Royal Enfield Bullet 500 + Cold Start

  • Kick starting my new Royal Enfiled Bullet 500 after a cold winter night. It comes with a carburettor. The ignition coil take time to heat up. It would have easily started with the electric ignition, but I have been told that kick starting the bike in the morning helps increase the battery life. Feel free to comment if I am doing anything wrong.

    Knowing fully well that kicking is a big problem in bullet,
    I recently bought a thunderbird 500. Kick starting a 500 cc is more difficult
    than a 350 cc. The way you kick is not possible when someone is in a hurry or
    in a busy street. Kick start ones or twice in a day. If it doesn't start,
    happily use the push button electric start. The 500 cc Thunderbird user manual
    does not suggest that kick starting the first time in a day is must. Treat your
    500 cc as you would start your car. There are some bikes in the market without
    kicker. The Royal Enfield Himalayan does not have kicker as you would know.
    Earlier 250 cc Karizma did not have kicker and even Yamaha had 150 cc model
    without kicker. Battery will work well for about two years and make use of your
    battery and enjoy your ride in your 500 cc. Kick off your kicking business.

    I get my bullt started in just 2 or max 3 kicks every morning and don't even need choke. The way you're doing it is wrong. You gotta do it with force at the same time gently and feel the g spot of the kick and apply force accordingly.

    In case you are also turning the accelerator like in other bikes while starting, avoid that. Let it start and then gently increase the accelerator.

    your close what you need to do is crank the kick start till you feel the compression then slowly and gently push past the compression then a further 1/4 turn the pedal will feel quite loose bring it up and swing it the fly wheel will have enough momentum to take the piston through the next compression less effort more results easy

    You dont have to kickstart the bike if you've properly maintained the battery on the bike.
    I have Classic 350 and in 10months of owning it, i've kickstarted it only some 10 times ,maybe.
    It always starts up in the electric starter, right on the first try itself.
    As far as battery is concerned, use these tips:
    1) During night rides, when you're going going in slow/crawling traffic do not use the main headlamp. Ride with the pilot lights.
    If you use headlamp, you can clearly see that the ammeter deflects towards the RED side, which means your battery is discharging and fast.
    The ideal ammeter position is at the centre.
    2) Never run any bulb/ indicators without starting the bike
    3)Do not install after-market lights/ projector bulbs...
    4) Check distilled water levels every 2-3 month once.
    So, if you maintain the ammeter at the centre as far as possible and follow these tips, the bike will always startup on the first go, without any problem whether by self start or kick

      +Ajay Kaushik Hey bro thanks for the tips. I donnot have any problem with the starter. I have been advised by everybody that one should always kickstart their bullet in the morning. It helps increase the life of the battery. Also I wanted to learn to kick start it properly. I will be posting a follow up video soon as i can now start the bike with one kick early in the morning also.

      Any particular reason?
      I don't know. Can you tell why?
      Most modern bikes come with just self-starts; No kick at all.
      Even RE Himalayan has only self-start

    Hey buddy! Congratulations on your new motorcycle. I have the same one in black. I always take the bike off centre stand and then kick start, with my left leg planted firmly on the ground. Also make sure to kick fully till the end and hold it there for a second or two. Hope this helps. Cheers!

    • @thumpingj701
      @thumpingj701  8 років тому

      Thanks man. Once the bike is warmed up even I kick start it with my leg planted on the ground but the first start in morning usually takes many kicks for me so I leave it on the stand. Holding it at the end does help. Thanks for the tip.

    Hello Brother. Your bike simply looks great.....Love this one....Personally I like Jet Black colour with white paint on the tank. It appeals me more. As you are a first time RE owner (What I would love to be ) and dare to have the bigger one in first go, what is the experience till date. Are you happy with the performance to be honest? I am planning to have the Jet Black one by Sept this year. How much does it cost on road. My idea is 1.7K. Is it right, or you have to pay some bucks more for the new colour?
    Have you measured the mileage correctly till date? Is there any huge difference with 350cc?

      +soumyaranjan parida Thank you. I am really having fun. This is not only my first bullet but also my first bike. The only problem is that I am not able to ride it everyday. In fact its more like once a week. So I still a while to go before riding becomes second nature. I am getting a decent average of about 40 KM/l. Yes ur right about the price. No i did not pay anything extra for the colour.

    Hey, just a piece of advice - on UCE bikes, it's best to ONLY use the electric start, and use the kickstart only when there's a problem with the electric start. The myth that they need to be kickstarted in the morning is very prevalent, and quite wrong :)

    • @jhaprtk
      @jhaprtk 8 років тому

      +Arjun Kamath o is that so. But I guess the logic behind kick starting the bike does make sense. Plus I don't think it has any down side does it?

    • @fuelarjun
      @fuelarjun 8 років тому

      No downside, except it's very tedious when there is a self start! I've only been using the electric start since I bought my CL500 in 2011, it still works like a charm.. I guess the electric ignition stays fit that way, the kickstart doesn't need any such exercise ;)

    • @fuelarjun
      @fuelarjun 8 років тому

      Another point to add - all exported REs have NO kickstart option, they're like regular bikes.. There's a reason why kickstarts started going extinct around the 70s :)

    • @thumpingj701
      @thumpingj701  8 років тому

      +Arjun Kamath One thing to keep in mind that the engine on this bike is still the same vintage one except probably a few minor changes. Also kicking the bike is usually to do with increasing the battery life. If you use your bike everyday u can probably use only the electric start. I havent started my bike in last 5 days. So whenever I start it next ill kick start it so that the cold battery can get charged and not use the starter and put tremendous strain on a cold battery. Thats my reasoning. I could be wrong. Cheers

    • @fuelarjun
      @fuelarjun 8 років тому +1

      +Thumping J You're right, if that's the case then a kickstart in the morning is warranted to warm up the engine and not strain the battery :) A lot of this also has to do with the climate. On long rides in HP or J&K, I used only the kickstart in the morning for this very same reason, I agree completely.

  • @bhushandd
    @bhushandd 8 років тому +2

    you just have to pump the kick till its little hard to push down then do hard kick and it will start in 1 or 2 attempts itself

    • @bhushandd
      @bhushandd 8 років тому

      also bike idle is little high i guess

      @thumpingj701  8 років тому

      how do i check if the bikes idle is high???

    • @bhushandd
      @bhushandd 8 років тому

      +Thumping J Check the screw located near fuel tank valve it should be covered with spring try to adjust where you can feel the engine thumps slowly yet bike is engine is not going to stop when kept on idle
      this will also reduce that noise you get from the engine valves

    Thumping J Your not following the right process ," first 2-3 kicks with ignition off , then you can use choke or with out choke, But the before the final starting kick you need to bring the piston to the Top dead center with a kick, you will feel this with the resistance you feel, then you need to stop and bring the kick lever back up and give a smooth full kick it will start !".....
