Took me forever to figure out you just have to avoid them. I was trying to kill them! If you put the module at the back and are fast enough you can if you hold it long enough on them but it was pretty impossible.
Wow, having enjoyed playing this classic on ps1 recently it blows my mind that they managed to do this on the original gameboy! Sometimes I forget just how much power that thing had
@@CousinHubertRetrogaming Don't think the Gamegear had an actual conversion of R-Type, but the Master System version should be a very good example of what it would have been like. It too is a very creditable version of the game.
R-Type for the Game Boy was my first videogame ever! I played it so many years and guess what? I never got further than level 4. Need to buy a GB and finally finish this.
If some of you are wondering why the screen is not dark like the original R-Type, games on the Gameboy appeared better this way since the screen was LCD and not like a television set - and it used less electricity to maintain.
The Game Boy screen not being frontlit or backlit is why games needed to have a high contrast, not because the screen is an LCD (HDTVs today are mostly LCDs, FYI).
Love to see everyone here had the same problems like me with stage 4. One thing I learned as an adult is that in many games there are sections where you just have to wait a few moments to not die, or make the jump etc. which is really hard if you are young ;) Whatever this game is awesome and pure nostalgia. Never lose any upgrade and its still hard as tungsten! Those were the days...
I play (yes today too !) this game everyday in train on my Gameboy dmg-01. Fond memories of the arcade version and the Amstrad cpc version as well. One of the best shoot'em up of that time if not the best
For the 4th level, if you got really close to the ceiling of those tunnels the pringles/don't hit you. To beat the boss battle of that level there is a spot near the top of the screen where enemies don't touch you, go there with the drone attached to your rear and it will damage them when they pass near you (their weak spot is the light in their back), have the beam charged to one hit kill those who are inverted.
could never get past the 4th stage.. now i know the ending after nearly 20 years: 2 sentences. they really did know how to bust you down after completing a game back then..
You only returned a “short peace”. You need to complete the second loop if you want to obtain to true ending and destroy the Bydo Empire indefinably. It’s actually not a great deal harder then the first.
I actually prefer this to the arcade version, the 'slowdown' helps a lot lol. There are tons of great shooters on the Gameboy, this and Nemesis are my favourites (I give Solar Striker props too).
Get the DX version for gameboy color it's alot more common and it has r type 2 in it too. PLus it still works on a regular gameboy or gameboy pocket as well.
has anyone noticed that the music is lagging/missing some notes when you shoot like a mad man? Thought it'd be better on an emulator, but I guess not xd
This game sounds awesome on a real Game Boy or Game Boy Pocket while on a Game Boy Color and up, the buzzing part of the music sounds crappy and just like a square wave beep.
@AmyBohemi Lol me too, never made it past level 4. Games these days are f*ck*ng simple compared to before. Most of my gameboy games I never completed except for Super Mario. Maybe the good games back in the days were the ones that you could keep playing after 10,000 deaths and the mediocre ones were those that got boring after 5000 deaths ;)
+Kenneth Rogers Sadly? jajaja Resolution, color, sound, cpu... Don`t compare pc engine and game boy. This one is a wonderful good version for such a limited system.
33 years old and the gameboy is still awesome, brilliant conversion of R Type!
PLAYABILITY this is what keeps Nintendo alive
Could never pass stage four as a kid either. Happy to see i wasn't the only one.

The most powerful console is nothing without the best games and programmers.... Lynx and gamegear fell way behind

Okay, that is me perfectly. My first game ever, couldn't beat level 4, MY CHILDHOOD IN A NUTSHELL. Holy hell.
Stage 4 was hard as fuck.

I loved this game back in the day. I really need to find another copy of this and add it back to my Gameboy collection.

Glad to know I was not the only one stuck in level 4 as a kid
AMO LA MÚSICA DE ESTE JUEGO, ES UN JUEGO QUE NUNCA OLVIDARÉ, POR SUS GRÁFICOS SENCILLOS Y SU NIVEL DE DIFICULTAD TAN JUGABLE.
Beating this was such a blast as a kid.
very good 👍 I used to beat this game too in the past 😃
the music is bad ass it fortunately doesnt repeat itself from level to level :D
could never get past the 4th stage.. now i know the ending after nearly 20 years: 2 sentences. they really did know how to bust you down after completing a game back then..
Finally I know how the last boss looks like :D
Great Melodie!
yeahhhh i watch stage 5 and stage 6 after so many years

That feel in the second level when you become fast
+James10899 yea
They sent me to anger management class in elementary because of this
I learned a lot of cool tricks from this video.
This and super mario land 2 is all I used to play on my gameboy XD
This video makes it look easy couldnt get past stage 4 as a kid!
The Arcade Hit Is Now On Your Nintendo Game Boy From Irem!
Blast Off And Strike The Evil Bydo Empire In R-TYPE!
anyone notice how rare this game has gotten...just looked on ebay only 1 listing for the American version.
Get the DX version for gameboy color it's alot more common and it has r type 2 in it too. PLus it still works on a regular gameboy or gameboy pocket as well.
Yea i know but i collect regular gameboy...gonna get it now before it becomes a 50 dollar game!!
I'm a pretty big gameboy collector too but I really wanted to try this one out so I got the dx version for $10 lol.
Adam Mastrandrea I have this and the XD one in Ultra MINT condition
omg i didnt remember it's name, now that r-type 2 is out, I found it. yepeee
I've never heard of this before but it's cool.
I watch this and then i think about all the people who said the gameboy had serious hardware limitations, and then i laugh
Early gameboy cartridges where so short in game length.
yfw you didn't pick the speed power up in the second level because you were too fast and crashed often.
Victor you crashed often
I never see the final this game. thanks you I could see him.
I completed this on GameBoy as a kid, cop that noobs!
has anyone noticed that the music is lagging/missing some notes when you shoot like a mad man? Thought it'd be better on an emulator, but I guess not xd
RIP HEADPHONE USERS during the stage clear bonus score tally💀
I always thought the ship looked like a giant finger
Hahaha,its true
To this day I've never worked out what those flying Pringle things are I level 4.
they look for me like flying sofas

That very last soundtrack is really good. Any way to get it?
I thought the enemies in Stage 1 were noses. And you were dodging almonds in Stage 4.
Amazing Graphic.

It's easy to do that with savestates 😉
Maybe I should get some a gameboy emul8tor
Dat 2nd boss...
Sadly, this version does not beat the PC Engine version
+Kenneth Rogers Sadly? jajaja Resolution, color, sound, cpu... Don`t compare pc engine and game boy. This one is a wonderful good version for such a limited system.
Yes you should always compare handheld systems and home consoles/pc. Totally the same thing
eh, what's the ultimate challenge?
Gran juego
NEVER CAN NOT GEAR STAGE4
Yup... stage 4...
14:08 AC版とけっこうちがうね🙃
Haha, now I see that too.
This is similar to Nemesis.

A little disappointing compared to the SMS version. They really needed a bigger ROM for this one.
Wow, this was certainly recorded off of a horrible emulator.
