Li Hu and Huang Wenjing are the founding partners of OPEN Architecture. Their new project, The Chapel of Sound, is an open-air concert hall nestled in a valley close to the ruins of the Ming Dynasty-era Great Wall.
Commissioned to capture the experience of music performed outdoors, the chapel’s design was informed by a search for the shape of sound. The concrete chapel has no heating or air conditioning, with a Pantheon-inspired aperture that opens to the elements. Winding staircases weave through the building to a rooftop platform that offers panoramic views of the valley and Great Wall.

Love the interview💙
If this was my project the very first thing I would do is search out the very best acoustical engineers in the business, the visual design would play second fiddle. 🖖
For a music performance space, it's a little disappointing to not hear a performance within the space. Whilst it's an impressive project, it seems more like an art project in and of itself
The main goal of this project is to bring tourism to an otherwise unvisited space along the Great Wall. I’m sure they’d like people to make the journey and experience the space in its entirety.
