I'll die on this hill; Stargate SG1 worked so well because while it was military sci-fi, it was first and foremost a military show with sci-fi elements. That familiarity of the military with its current day technology, customs and courtesies, and uniforms and the fact the show itself leans into our own curiosities about things like aliens, Area 51, and the actual NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex made our suspension of disbelief a seamless transition into thinking that could be what they're doing up there.
It also worked well because the technological progress felt earned, we see them over the seasons aquiring technology, which makes SGC go from a new player in galactic politics to a superpower. Additionally, having unprecedented Air Force support and input made some parts sure feel alot more real.
@@DrKartoffelsalat I think it's also important that if they renew the series, the technology level needs to feel "present day" and while not exactly retcon all of the technology that were acquired over the SG-1 timeline, but not rely or show so much because its that "earned technology" feeling you described that makes the series work. Also in any renewed series the main characters CANNOT be on SG-1 nor should it feature SG-1 in any way. We should never know or see who is now on SG-1 just so that we can keep that mystique going and plus we already have 10 seasons of SG1 from a direct perspective. It'll be cool to see Stargate from a different, Earth perspective. I've always though any new series should have main characters in the NID. I thought that organization was underutilized and always typecast as the antagonist but I think there's a lot of room there to build on an already great series.
@@enzov9772 Homeworld Command could easily be the overarching organization shown in a new show, since they organize the SGC, Atlantis Expedition, Destiny Expedition, etc. Could allow us to combine all of it into one and show multiple different perspectives. But i'm not too confident we'll ever see a continuation, a reboot is more likely.
I did AFJROTC on High School. To help me remember the rank system (we studied it weekly as part of the curriculum) I would watch SG-1 and pause at scenes featuring the ranks, trying to guess them before checking against a worksheet.

Stargate cosplayer here. This video is awesome. I wear the bdu woodland one... just bough a PASGT vest. I'll use this video from now on to guide my group into new uniforms!
Fun fact, for around the first 12 episodes of season 1, the Taurus PT92 was used as a stand in for the Beretta M9/92FS. Apparently the production team couldnt get their hands on real Berettas for a while.
I think that’s actually pretty typical for film armory companies; the Taurus copies are cheaper and only really eagle-eyed gun nerds will spot the difference on-screen.
Rich actually really liked those "mountaineering glasses". I visited the set for my Make-A-Wish trip back in the day during the production of season 5, and while I was there Rich actually wore those glasses like off-set during lunch and when we were playing basketball and shit. We weren't even shooting outside that day and everything was shot inside on the main set, but he had those glasses on whenever we were outside for any reason. My mom even asked him about it, like mentioned offhand that they must be pretty nice if he's choosing to wear them on his own. He said he wasn't sure where they (wardrobe or props department or whatever) got them, but he really liked them and even had them get him another pair to take home lol. I've never checked on it myself, but I'd be surprised if they were entirely custom made... Anyway just a fun little bit of info I thought I'd offer.
For the most part the were Bolle and then when they had the leather patch on the bridge they were most likely Julbo. I sold a bunch of them in the late 90s...mountain town.
I need to know if this video is 38 minutes long intentionally or if that was a complete coincidence... (tl;dr: 38 minutes is the longest you can keep a gate open under standard conditions in the Stargate lore)
A very nice history and detail on each uniform set. Funny enough the tactical vest seemed very outdated for the time. We had different kit totally in the military. Im looking forward to what the next uniform will be.
Great video. I’m rewatching SG-1 and Atlantis now. It would have been cool to see some episodes of the series that were dedicated to teams from the other branches like the U.S. Army/Marines and the foreign teams.
the mixxing and matching of uniforms is kind of normal in the military. as new uniforms, styles, and equipment phase in and out. not everyone can get all the new stuff right away. obviously the best of the best get all the best stuff first all the time, but for all the support trades and less operational positions, you are genearlly getting what you can get from supply depending on what they have in stock. dress uniforms are the exception. when something changes on them, you best make sure that the next time you have to wear it, it is up to date. I have seen some people walking around with outdated patches, ranks, and what not in dress uniforms, and they stick out like crazy for the wrong reasons.
I have ordered from Stitch’s Loft many times. The Loft is a great place to order screen accurate from as they know their stuff and make excellent products. Highly recommend them. Thanks. This video was amazing.
since this show was made in canada, I wonder how much of the uniforms were canadian surplus? the "vietnam cut" pants look very close to the OD green canadian combat pants.
probably alot of them were, you can see the canadian olive drab in outer limits episodes that involve special forces units. alot of OG "diameco" C7S were used as stand ins for the M16 on those shows as well
well, it would certainly save any cosplayer a lot of trouble..the US veitnam cut uniforms have been out of service for a long time, and replicas are extremely expensive.
@@warhorse03826 oh 100 percent, I ended up getting a full sleeve canadian OD for just 15 bucks off an army surplus site awhile back, there's literally piles of the stuff kicking around canada. the colors are almost identical too. absolutely mindblowing seeing dudes dropping over 100 bucks on a basic olive green fatigue shirt.

I shoot a real P90S (carbine with a 16" barrel) and there are MOLLE compatible single and double magazine pouches. They are velcroed at the top. I wear 3 double pouches on my vest. The 50 round magazines are actually surprisingly light.
It's actually the "FN PS90". But you are right about the magazines being quite light; lighter than a standard P-Mag for the AR platform. I've often wondered if anybody cosplays with the actual real firearm (unloaded, presumably), instead of the cheap airsoft replicas. I have heard the airsoft version is much lighter, and some people complain about the weight of the real thing, but it's not really that bad & you get used to it pretty quick. Having only experience with the real gun, I can't speak from experience in how the airsoft version compares. It is a ridiculously easy gun to shoot, quiet, with such a low recoil that it's a breeze to stay on target. It feels & pops like a .22, but hammers targets like a 5.56mm. It's a far cry from the AR platform, while being similarly capable. I bought mine about 6 years ago, and it was an excellent $1600 investment that will last a lifetime. The sole down side is the ammo tends to be harder to find and costs about twice that of 9mm, though a 50-rnd box is a deceptively small and light package.
