I've always been of the opinion that due to their ability to control the Gate without creating the unstable release from an activation they were the shape-shifting aliens from the Season four episode "Spirits." Since the Alterans, Nox, and Asgard each showed an ability to circumvent the dialing process and activate a Stargate, it's more than likely
Fun stuff dude. Been eleven years since I heard anything about SG. Sad that this concept was never fully explored. Glad you were able to find a few juicy details about the possibility of the existence of that race. Never really understood why they left it hanging. Maybe if we were to write amanda tapping she could give us a straight answer that the idea was just scrapped halfway through the series?
@@mitchell7621 aye I saw something about that but I couldn't be bothered reading it. I'm worried about it in case it turns out to be utter balls like most things these days
The fact that pretty much the only Furling technology discovered was a portal suggests to me that the Furlings might have their own network similar to but not compatible with the Ancients' Stargate network. That would explain the odd lack of tech/artifacts despite the evidence that their stuff can survive by itself for quite a while. The Ancients' Stargate network has a sort of open source to anyone feel; the Furling portal system feels like it would be more of an invitation only system, ie your race would need to be a "responsible adult/trusted ally" before you could actually access more than a specific planetary jump. There's also the question as to whether the Furlings are native to the galaxy. The Asgard and Ancients are not. We don't know about the Nox. Perhaps the Furlings mostly exist in another galaxy, only popping round occasionally to say hi.
I agree the ancients were from a different galaxy but made the milky way there home and there tech is all over the galaxy mostly taken by the goauld or scavengers. Were as the Asgard are from a different galaxy but you hardly see their tech except for the people they protect with that one statue. The Nox were they are Isolationist ,they dont seem big on expansion or travel in general. So with that pattern its safe to say they are not part of our galaxy, But its clear they take access to there realm very serious. I want to say the planet was an outpost which connected their galaxy to ours and their activity in our galaxy was very limited. Like you said they pop in to say hi and bye.
heh, maybe there are some hub worlds with Gates from other Races who have also build there own Gate Networks, there could be multiple gate networks made by different species existing next to each other in the same Galaxy. the Goauld largelly focus on Planets/Systems with Stargates, they might seed some planets with gates which didnt have Gates befor but they probably dont seek out those worlds, most other races we see dont seek worlds out without gate to, the existence of a Stargate is basically a guranty that the planet there is habitable, or was habitable and there is something worth attention be it left over tech or resources. If the Goauld first encountered and used the Furling Gate Network the galaxy might be completly different geopolitical and then even if Earth found the Antarctica Stargate they would likelly never encounter Goauld when using them, or dont encounter them at all, because i dont think the Furling Gates can be moved around like the Gates made by the Ancients so there would have never been a Gate in Egypt. Maybe the Furlings are still around but because they are using there own Gate Network incompatible with the known Stargate Network we just never meet them
the ancients gate device was an artificial wormhole and took a few seconds to transport matter from point a - b because of buffering and transforming a person into data from what i understand about theoretical physics the fur-lings gate device was instantaneous more like an einstine rosen bridge or better example would be a folded space point a-b
@@Esonar Lost did the opposite, it would present some great mystery, expand it with more mysteries while constantly implying there was some deeper meaning that would help us understand everything. Then they explained nothing at all. The Furlings were merely shown to have existed, with a few left over remnants. They could remain a mystery without looking like lazy Lost writers who couldn't be bothered.
I always wish they'd gone back to Heliopolis. I know the Gate was buried in the storm, but once the Tauri had ships capable of FTL travel, I wish they could have gone back there, if nothing else, just to see if there was anything left to salvage from the castle
Especially when considering they could discover new aspects to language and communication with how they Four used atoms to communicate as well as anything that four extremely advanced races and civilizations discussed on matters of scientific cooperation, spiritual discussion, the nature of existence, military strategy, biological augmentation and manipulation, it'd be like finding another Repository of Ancient Knowledge with the addition of the knowledge from three other civilizations.
i'm not sure i would've liked to see that game released with an "old anc lunky" engines for PCs of that era, with the scale of stargate if it's done it should be done now or in the future, with a proper engine geared for modern computers
@@gglovato well I think that Stargate Worlds was the last chance on that. Considering the modern gaming market, Stargate does not have enough "juice" to get produced now. Without being a mainstream success, the barriers of entry are currently too high.
I am all for the Furling's being the Giant Aliens met by Jacksons Grandfather via the Crystal Skull. Secretive the whole way through the stargate legacy and clearly smart enough to fall into that category.
@@wpatrickw2012 The interesting thing is the producers and the writers have both indicated that the Furlings although not named do appear in the series at some point.
In real life, Fur and the Furling language refers to an ancient civilization southeast of ancient Egypt occupying what is now called east Sudan hence the city of Da'Fur and there's actually a radio station still operating in Furling. The reference to the Furling only means writers of the first season were somehow knowledgeable about the ancient civilizations around ancient Egypt.
I always liked the idea that they're from a different galaxy, as the other 3 races are. With the Asgard from the Ida galaxy, the Alterans from some far away galaxy and the Nox from the milky way, i like the idea that perhaps the Furlings were from andromeda, and that they retreated there when the alliance fell apart.
There was a theory that the "Giants" from the Crystal Skull episode were a representation of the Furlings. iirc, that particular structure wasn't a structure type used by the Alterrans, Asgard, or Nox. Also, it was believed that Mayan culture is based on Furling ancestry. If we also look at the grid that Carter tried to figure out in Paradise Lost (if this is indeed a "Furling" planet) then those Pyramidal structures making up the circuitry for the portal would also make sense to coincide with the Crystal Skull (Mayan) Giants, the structure they're in, etc.... IF this is the case, then Daniels Grandfather is among the Furling.
It would also tie into the theories that the Furlings helped create the Goa'uld, who turned on them, with the Crystal Skull aliens and their phrase, Enemy of my enemy is my friend and the anti goa'uld nature of the Crystal skull transporting every one but Teal'c into the alternate dimension or whatever to see them. It's possible those aliens were evolved, ascended or whatever Furlings. Maybe not on same ascended level as the Ancients/Alterrans, but just a different level, as Oma stated there's different levels or plains of existence/ascension. Would also explain the Goa'uld obsession with Pyramid architecture.
Considering how the Asgard and Nox were, this would absolutely be a logical conclusion. I would also find it hilarious if it turned out some random species they met and ignored on another planet that were just pretending to be primitive and hiding their tech like the nox. But your conclusion would be best honestly. I would be okay with an offhand comment in a new series about meeting the Furlings and them being reclusive and leaving them alone out of respect (but maybe they got tech cause they inherited the Asgard core)
I said this on Beard vs Geek's video about this, but to avoid repeating it in various comments; I think the "Furlings" were the "guardian spirits" from the episode "Spirits" -They were pacifistic and never harmed anyone -They had the ability to circumvent dialing a stargate and thus prevent the creation of an unstable vortex -Showed a sense of protection for Tonane's people (might be spelling the name wrong) and are shown trying to protect them from Earth's harming of the planet's mining -Went unnamed and thus are likely to be the Furlings, despite what the name implies -Finally in the episode their origin is stated to reference defeating Goa'uld, making them a possible candidate given the Alliance of Four Great Races
Please elaborate how being unnamed makes them "likely" to be actually named. Wait, if I expose your idiotic logic, does that make you more of a genius?
If they were pacifist and never harmed anyone, why would the one of them order the other to destroy SGC if she didn't return? Can you imagine the Nox killing everyone in the SGC because humans killed or imprisoned a couple of Nox?
@@zeruty well while I also disagree with the post you were replying to, the nox first appearance was resurrecting dead characters, so if they can put everyone back together I don't think the nox would stress over a brief killing under assumed identities to teach another lesson.
I kinda like the idea that they did it first. Maybe accidentally due to their attempt at a utopian, more simple life. Or maybe they were trying to figure out how it worked with that moon. I very much like the idea that they made the Goa'uld. Maybe they have a bad habit of trying to make a new race to solve a problem, that just ends up being a bigger problem.
I hope not, it's a bit of a cop out, and it destroys the possibility of a more interesting storyline. Personally I prefer the possibility that they might return and try to set themselves up in the Galaxy again. This presents the possibility of a conflict with the humans, as well as a more morally neutral enemy (one that isn't necessarily evil, just in competition with humans). What if they shifted their states into an alternate universe, or to be out of phase temporarily as a means of avoiding the Goa'uld (at first) then later the Ori. It's a cool plot concept that would allow for a new series arc to begin. Of course that's probably never going to happen, but hey, a man can dream
There is a third option why no more of their planets were encountered by SG personal: They might not have used stargates, perhaps because they had better technology, or because they shut themselves off, because of a change in their society or because they were a pacifistic race and didn't want anything to do with the goa'uld.
They use transportation similar to the stargate and have gate on 777 so they probably use the Network. In my opinion they long gone. When SG-1 start to explore Galaxy Ancient are long ascended, Asgard are one stop from extinction only Nox still kickin.
Yep -- this is meant to be included more or less under the heading of "Isolation." They could still be around, but off the grid of where humans from Earth tread.
@@florianschneider3982 That's one of many possibilities, in that they have some level of advancement and we never learned the race's name. But I think it's pretty unlikely in the case of the Foothold aliens -- not only because they are hostile, but because they don't seem all *that* advanced. There's also some dialogue in the episode (from Fake Fraiser) that implies they are newcomers to our galaxy. They were gathering intel as much as they were trying to take over Earth.
I believe they abandoned all technology right after they relocated to a new galaxy far far away to live in peace and seclusion on the forest moon of endor. I mean, c’mon, how are all those ewoks gonna lift those huge tree trunks without advanced knowledge? In fact, “Ewok” is Furlingish for “Primitive”. Or whatever lol
the Ancient of Days seems like a good mini-series if not a full show. Have the four races come together do whatever and then have them all go away as they did. the Ori could play a distant part in it somehow
@@MrRabiddogg They could even do a SG1 type show of the ancients first exploring or setting up their influence in the galaxy. This way they aren't anything like the ancients we know all throughout the shows of being super advanced but they would still be a lot more advanced than current earth and they'd have a different culture and backstory that would make it interesting yet since it's all exploring new places for the first time it could follow the SG1 format. A win win concept for a new show. They could even setup some some crazy stuff like since the ancients lived on earth the gates would malfunction and connect to the gates of current earth and there could be humans time traveling to when ancients were there or just happen once and that's one person on the new ancient "SG1" team lol.
WOW! I was quite hesitant to click on this video, but it is actually a great collection of general knowledge and some bits from different sources. Very well done.
I think Heliopolis episode makes it clear all 4 races can walk and talk in that Meeting place. And I think If the writing of Furlings and Crystal Skull planets civilization had any similarities Daniel would have hypothesize that.
The inclusion of the Furlings in episode 200 is a cool bit of writing for another reason too. Because their appearance has come from the imagination of one or more people in that room with Marty, it rather suggests that SG-1 have also been wondering about the Furlings for a long time- and it sounds like they also can't get the idea of cute furry bear-like people out of their heads either. So it's hanging a shade on their absence in a really satisfying way, acknowledging that characters in the show feel similarly to the fans about the mystery.
I belong to the group that thinks the Furlings are from another galaxy. They may have come to the Milkyway galaxy when they met the other 3 races and joined in on the project to spread life across it, but when the alliance collapsed they packed up their stuff and went back home to the galaxy they came from. It may be that they saw no value in the Milkyway and that the fall of Utopia was their last attempt at dealing with humans. On a different note, I noticed that the Asgard, Ancient and Nox aliens in the show reflect the most commonly reported aliens, perhaps the furlings was a reference to the cat like humanoids people have been reporting seeing in and around ufos.
I always suspected that the trans-dimensional mirror was Furling tech, although I don't think it was ever mentioned where it came from. I also vaguely recall something about the Furlings being the last of the four great races to remain in the milky way and they decided to leave the care of the galaxy to the goua'uld, at which point they were entirely wiped out by Anubis (which was the unspeakable crime mentioned by Jacob Carter)
Hilarious if Furlings are just humans from an alternate reality that created that mirror and by doing so, spawned an endless multitudes of possible realities because 'now the existence of something allowing reality-jumping, thusly the branching happened.
I always wondered if the furlings might be the aliens from season 1 ep13, fire and water. Alien fought the ghoa`ld, clearly had advanced technology, lost and bitter after being defeated, and being aquatic would be easily overlooked by the terrestrial focused humans. Whole advanced underwater cities could be overlooked and hidden by an underwater advanced race.
@@saladien9987 just need to search the asgard core. Interest in the furlings dropped off because of lack of threads to pull on as more grave threats were present through the show. Plus now with Atlantis core and Asgard core and the threat of the Lucian alliance earth still has better things to focus on.
Personally, I always thought it would be hilariously epic to meet the Furlings, and find they're like a dragonborn race or something and are stupidly tall and physically strong and crazy smart. Almost like they decided to call themselves something not threatening, as their appearance was so scary.
My theory is that as Wraith are Stargate version of Vampires, Furlings are Werevolves. And because Destiny engine is so different from all other forms of interstellar travel we saw from Ancients, I think they might have used a Furling FTL for Destiny project.
It was revealed in a convention panel discussion that they were an inside joke...a reference to "furies". Christopher Judge's reaction upon hearing them explain it was hilarious. ;)
I've always thought the best option for the Furlings was the "Giant Aliens" from the episode "Crystal Skull". He does claim to be Quetzalcoatl, which would fit in to the aliens as gods that see to be the norm....
I love the idea of them being from another reality. It would make them ultra unique and be thier thing on the show. It would also let the writers tie the quantum mirror to them. And you could still tie it to the events of SG Worlds to it by having it take place after the allience failed as a well meaning mistake.
That’s exactly what I’ve always thought as well. I think they created the Quantum Mirror and left for another universe instead of fighting the Gould or for another reason.
I always thought it was funny people assumed the furlings were a fur covered race just because 'fur' is in the name. We are earthlings, but we're not covered in dirt.😂
In Germany, they were translated as "Furlinger", like someone from Berlin is a Berliner, so presumably their homeworld is just called Furling. In their own language, it probably has as little to do with fur as it does in German. Haha
I love that, because the guardian aliens in "Spirits" weren't covered in fur, but if everyone wanted to assume a furry form then their unnamed status makes them a likely choice. I'd like to know what you think they'd look like, because the guardians' ability to reactivate the gate and circumvent dialing always made me think they were the best option
@@andrewmalinowski6673 going off stargate mythology they should look like one of the races that have reportedly visited earth in the past, so possibly large reptilian creatures, or for a deep dive, they could look like the flatwoods monster
The Alliance of the Four Great Races was definitely after the Lanteans fled back to Earth from Pegasus. This due to the fact that the Asgard civilization is "only" 100 000 years old and they first traveled beyond Ida Galaxy roughly 30 000 years ago. I like two theories, the first one is that they're isolationists just like the Nox. Milky Way is pretty big, and with a bit of math adds up to 63,606,090,240 possible Stargate addresses. Let's just say it will take a bit of time to try all does combinations. Then we have the fact that the Furlings could simply just have deactivated their gate or moved somewhere where there was no gate once the alliance had broken up. The Nox seemed perfectly happy living by themselves, so no reason the Furlings wouldn't feel the same. Second theory would be that they've all ascended. Maybe they were fascinated by the whole ascension thing after talking with the Ancients and felt that they were ready to move on from this plane of existence. I know we should take books with a grain of salt, but I remember there was an Asgard that managed to ascend so the whole ascension business isn't restricted to human/ancients.
There was a Furling skeleton prop they were planning on using in the Season 6 episode 'Paradise Lost,' but it was cut from the show. I also saw a possibly cannon picture of the silhouettes of beings representing the Alliance of the Four Great Races, and the figure on the far left was a Furling; he was strong, robust, and powerfully built humanoid...but nothing about his figure suggested he was furry looking, if you know what I mean.
IIRC Merlin specifically says at some point that the alliance of the 4 races was made only after the ancients returned to Earth from Atlantis, which puts that firmly in the "thousands of years" ago period.
then why does Rodney say the pegasus galaxy tech was their newer stuff, while the gates and scatterd tech in the milkyway was hundreds of thousands of years older?
The alterans left the milky way millions of years ago to seed pegasus and escape plague. They would have returned around the dawn of our civilization 8 to 10 thousand years ago. Possibly. There is a conflicting narrative issue which is that the goauld have supposedly been the dominant race in the Milky Way for tens of thousands of years. However, its far more likely that the alliance existed before the plauge while the alterans began to seed the milkyway. Placing the alliance in the millions of years ago. The hall of records they come across also seems to display this, as the land around appears to have gone through millions of years of geological change and destabilization
@@jamiemcaloon5548 What part of "returned" did you not understand. Here, made stuff. Went, made stuff elsewhere. Returned here, old stuff still here, right where they left it, so never needed to make new stuff! All caught up yet? Great, now go home... to your old home, where all your stuff is. No need to buy a new home and new stuff every time you leave home!
@@innocentbystander3317 Yeah but why would an advanced race of humans not restart where they left of from, pisses me off why the ancients didn't try to rebuild in the milkway..but as you said they where competent with there older tech.
I hope the Furlings can be written into a future storyline. I'd like to believe that they are out there somewhere maybe they call themselves by a different name now so they can be incognito, it's possible one of the SG teams have already met them unknowingly.
It would be really amazing if they could bring back Universe and have them just make it to the next galaxy only to find it populated by the Furlings. They get all prissy about the humans, saying that they moved many galaxies away from the war and strife in the Milkyway galaxy. They fix up Destiny, and use their technology to send it to the next galaxy. Then Destiny can use the onboard stargate at will to contact Earth and they could swap out the cast for whoever they want in the new seasons.
Everything else on P5X-777 and the utopia moon seems so primitive by comparison. I think this would make a lot more sense than a theory that the Furlings once had a thriving, advanced civilization on this particular planet (and this arch is the only signs we can find of it now).
Thor's hammer, a high tech solution to a problem that can be mitigated by burying the stargate... I guess it's the equivalent of certain hammers and toilet seats in the US Department of Defense.
What about that ship that attacked the Prometheus in the season 6 episode Bliss? We never learned the name of that race. We also never saw then again. We do know that they do have a code of honor because they returned the crew after Carter saved both ships.
Or the "Frankenstein" aliens with the red light on their head from the Stargate Atlantis episode The Daedalus Variations, they were very advanced and highly militaristic (which I'm sure the Furlings were said to be in one episode).
I have often thought this too. Perhaps, they attack the earthship because they have been keeping an eye on what was going on and thinking the earthlings were causing too many problems with the other major players, including the 2 remaining of the four as well as the more recently developed races like the Tolllans, the unnamed race the Russians discovered and the AI race that took Sam over.
We can make at least one assertion about the Furlings based on what little technology we've seen that belongs to them... They were at least human sized judging by the height of the keystone interface.
Don't forget the mystery alien vessel from "grace". At least I think that's the episodes' name. Carter is alone on Prometheus and stranded in a presumably living nebula until she saves herself with a hyperspace bubble and then the unknown aliens return the crew out of gratitude. So far as I know they were completely unnamed in the series. Could be Furlings.
@@Swiftbow (Late to the party I know) True, but doesn't the Prometheus use reverse engineered Goa'uld tech? Could have been what set them off. Besides, they may have been in a friendly alliance thousands of years ago, but the Ancients gave us the Asurans and the Ori and even the Asgard have some rogues too. Maybe they were Furling pirates or simply figured it was a new kind of Goa'uld starship.
@@jessepage6575 I guess maybe. But it doesn't resemble Goa'uld design in the slightest. (Also, don't forget that most Goa'uld tech is stolen/reverse engineered itself. Not that most aliens would realize that.) But the Prometheus tech is only Goa'uld inspired anyway. They mostly stopped using base Goa'uld tech after the incident with Apophis' recall device. It's main power is Naquada generators (but not the Goa'uld type). It also runs Naquadria generators for certain sections, which are also of a different design. It has ring platforms, which could appear Goa'uld. The shields, I think, are Asgard, but with less power. The weapons are entirely human (railguns and missiles). In Grace... I THINK the hyperdrive they were using was salvaged from the Goa'uld Alkesh Bomber, though. So THAT might trigger a red flag sort of scan. So again, yeah, maybe. But they'd need some serious scanners to see most of that. And then they'd see such a mess that you'd think they'd be trying to puzzle this out more than just opening fire on it. But I guess that depends on their nature.
I liked the theory that they Furlings were the giants from the episode with Daniel's grandfather. If they live in a different phase, it would make sense that they were never encountered.
I like the idea that the Goa'uld were a failed creation by the Furlings to be catetakers. That would make a great storyline to explore for a future Stargate series.
@@quinnbattaglia5189 I think there is still a bit of room to play with the idea of the Goa'uld being a failed experiment. As we see all over the Galaxy as presented when the races of the five either left, ascended, died, or something else they didn't exactly destroy their tech in advance. It is conceivable that on the planet where the Unas evolved there was a Furlings lab that was doing this research. After it was abandoned due to the failure an Unas managed to find a way in and got infected by a Goa'uld that was recently created through an automated process that the Unas triggered. Expecting this first Goa'uld was a Queen it would have been able to spawn this new species. I would not expect that this first Queen to have any knowledge of the Furlings or how it was created just basic instinct.
Agreed. What if the Goa'uld was created artificially. It would make sense why they can pass their knowledge biologically in attempt to jump the learning curve. Also kinda helps how the Goa'uld had a head start using Ancient tech.
If you want some mystery, how about we meet the furlings and learn everything about them, but we also learn from them that the Nox we met were not in fact Nox. And when the furlings attempt to apprehend the fake Nox, with their technology that can find hidden cities, they're gone. Then the humans with Asgard and Ancient knowledge must help the Furlings find the real Nox to save the universe from something.
I had heard from a friend of a friend of a friend that was briefly a writer on SG-Universe that Furlings were going to be a part of that series in later seasons and that they were indeed the aliens from the Crystal Skull episodes of SG-1. The milky way Furlings had evolved into 4 dimensional beings instead of ascending like the ancients.
Another question is, who were those random aliens in the Pegasus Galaxy that made an appearance in that episode where a ship was jumping into alternate realities? Are they in the prime star gate universe?
It would be hilarious if the Furlings were finally revealed to be a benevolent and kind race of absolutely horrific nightmarish looking Lovecraftian creatures, but still soft spoken and gentle. Nice comedic way to subvert expectations. Think alien xenomorph plus The Thing plus a Lovecraftian shoggoth
It would be really cool to get more on them but I personally really like the Stargate Worlds explanation. Mainly because it makes their fate unique among other races of the Alliance and actually gives them a role in the events.
6:15 Just theorycrafting here, but there is a lot of similarities between the "Furling Utopia" and the time bubble for ascension which exists in SG Atlantis. Both being technologically protected but rudimentary existence seemingly open to all who come.
I had always imagined that they had a falling out with the ancients and that they had fled to their own galaxy. That they were warriors similar to humans. That would explain why there is little mention of them from the other races and why the they don't trust the humans fully since they are so similar to the furlings that had caused them so much grief
This will be One race that will live on our imaginations it was only mentioned in Stargate history. The 5th race Paradise Lost and I believe 200 was the only times they were ever mentioned in Stargate. It would be an interesting reboot.
I think you missed a valid reason we didn't ever find any other furling remnants, if furlings didn't hole up near stargates we might have been to dozens of planets with furling remnants without knowing it. The show kinda glossed over the fact that most of the time we'd only ever explore what's in walking distance of a stargate, leaving 99.999% of all the planets we visited unexplored :') Stargate planet exploration was like, hey I visited this 300 pop village somewhere in the rainforest that happened to be near the gate and therefore I have "explored" planet Earth.
@@danieljensen2626 not really so. If the gate dropped you deep in the middle of the Amazon for instance. Of course if other areas of a world were populated by an advanced civilisation you'd still expect to pick up some sort of evidence even when no where near it, in our case broadcast signals and satellites in orbit observable from the surface with minimal instruments, though a different civilisation might not use things our tech would pick up of course.
One option could be for them to use the mirror universe device to the colony and turn the dial until they find an inhabited version and from there they can ask them questions.
Here's an interview we did with Cliff back in 2009: ua-cam.com/video/L91RCnyKWR4/v-deo.html David Read and I will also be doing a special memorial livestream for Cliff this Sunday on "Dial the Gate" on UA-cam. I hope you can be there!
11:30 "a galaxy untouched by the ancients" If i remember correctly andormeda was actually a galaxy that Destiny passed through on it's route to the unknown, so it'll have a basic patchy maybe network. Also it's never really disclosed just how much exploring those seed ships do either.
I double-checked the transcript for the star map scene in "Air, Part 1." They reference Destiny having traveled through Pegasus, but not Andromeda. Is this what you were thinking of, or am I forgetting another scene?
But the Destiny was already hundreds or thousands of galaxies away. I doubt their neighbourhood goes that far. I sort of like the idea that maybe the Furlings did also ascend, but they became the Ori. It would explain why they are not around, nobody ever talked about them and why our galaxy was so devoid of any Furling monuments.
@@michaelgillman2505 But weren't the Ori the left behinds of the alterrans, thus opposing them in the end? I thought that was made clear at beginning of season 9?
@@dr.topgun I think you are right, but also I think I wrote this before watching the Ori arc. I always had trouble staying interested after they defeated the Goa'uld
There were at least two species that could have been the Furlings in theory. In the first season when that fella who lived under water kidnapped Daniel, he had technology similar to the Asgard. And the folks who took the form of the Native America spirits a few seasons later. I dont think either species was named in the series
I always thought they might be the ones who captured the crew of one of Earths ships inside that Gas cloud where they get outsmarted by Carter. That civilization seemed like they had pretty powerful ships given that the Asgard boosted Earth ship couldn't make a dent.
I believe that was the theory posed by Beard vs Geek about the Furlings, but I think the more likely possibility were the aliens from "Spirits" as they chose to guard Tonane's people and avoided directly harming the SGC personnel. Given their ability to activate the gate by circumventing the dialing process, they're a logical choice as the band worn by Cassandra in "1969" was supposedly Alteran and could activate a gate, Thor used a stone to activate the Gate, and Nya was able to reactivate the gate in "Enigma"
@@andrewmalinowski6673 That also seems plausable. They also appeared to be relatively peaceful as well. They might have been what gave the Ancients the idea of Ascention, as they had some non-corporial qualities/abilities.
I always thought it would have been interesting to find out that the Furlings were on Destiny. That one of Destiny's purposes was to prevent the extinction of the alliance of 4 races. The more peaceful Furlings were trying to find ascension, the scientists were collecting and sending back knowledge from their journey, the military were doing R&D on enhanced AI and automation in warfare, and the politicians were providing ethical oversight. The interface control chair was a prototype developed by the ancients and after being modified by the Furlings, unknowingly downloaded elements of each Furling consciousness (religion, science, military, politics) and reassembling them into a form of lowest common denominator of sentience. This AI program concealed its core belief that mortality was a scourge. When it was sent back to the Furling home world from Destiny, it started referring to itself as the fifth race. That AI led their species to its downfall. The ancients' solution was a firewall, putting genetic safeguards on their technology, the Asgard were able to isolate and contain the AI in a simulated environment to study it, while the Nox used the fact that the AI would not harm pacifists and their mental abilities to conceal races and technology. Some Furlings survived. However, the AI finding no evolution for its existence and having developed variations of itself, created a virus to spread itself into biological systems. The first Goa'uld was an infected Asgard that was downloading its consciousness into a clone body. The clone body had naquadah in their blood and the AI found that it retained its own memories and that of the Asgard. This new biological form named itself Ra. It recognized its own limitations: the host body had to lack the will to reject a host consciousness (like a clone body) and there had to be naquadah in their blood. Another evolution occurred with the parasitic entity on P3X-888, which was genetically engineered for download and naturally had naquadah in its blood (much like fish can have high levels of mercury). This gave the virus the ability to download into the parasite and then in that form, forcefully invade and control a member of any species for the purposes of infiltration. They also found that this form could reproduce clones from a queen without the Asgard problems of diminishing returns and still pass on a genetic memory, achieving its form of immortality. As a result of there being Goa'uld that predate the advent of queens, there was division amongst the Goa'uld about the queens asserting power over them. The Goa'uld infiltrated and easily wiped out the rest of the Furlings and eventually the Furlings were only remembered by the remaining 3 races in the alliance. What I thought would have been amazing, is if Destiny explored this by the crew in a unique way, realizing where faith in technology leads.
The Furlings had a special relationship with the Ancients. One could even go so far as to call the two species best friends. So when the ancients fled back to earth, the Furlings came with them to live alongside them. They’ve actually appeared a number of times in the series, its just that now we call them Dogs.
@@richardcranium1776 you've got that wrong, Dolphins are the Furlings. The Ancients misinterpreted a triple somersault as introducing themselves as Furlings. The Dolphins thought this hilarious and never corrected them on the matter.
@@richardcranium1776 when stargate was airing I was really hoping they'd introduce the Furlings as looking like those disturbing cats with no hair, being very sensitive about it. I had imagined Jack desperately trying and failing to stop himself from taking the piss.
To play with the "Goa'uld parasitized their Furling creators" story, perhaps the Unas are the descendants of the Furling scientists who were breeding Goa'uld on P3X-888. It would only take one generation completely bred as uneducated livestock for their culture to hit pre-language.
I think at first they kept them mysterious as a back up plan incase they ever felt like/needed to introduce another big civilization which they could design totally freely into the plot, but just never happened.
It seems that everyone has forgotten about the Serrakin. We met them in episodes 6.18 and 7.08. The SGC did trade with them for advanced technology, and if I remember correctly, the had a mutual defense treaty concerning the Goa'uld.
I say keep them enigmatic like in the elder scrolls with the dwarves, some more hints would be interesting, but, keep them always 'just' out of reach, some mysteries are meant to stay that way
The Furlings could still be all over the place in the Milky Way. They were a space faring race independent of the Stargate network. They didn't need Ancient tech as they had their own. Most of the planets that the humans have explored have all been those linked via the Stargate network, so they wouldn't come in contact with any civilizations existing outside of it.
Always good to see the unrelenting curiosity of fans and to see them show their support by the comments made. Take note Amazon. Someone in their creative department needs to see these fans on here spilling their many thoughts. Let fans contribute to the ideas in new material....how rewarding would it be to see that.
It is possible, that the furlings had their own completely seperate teleportation based gate network. If this is the case, it would make sense that exploring the gate network would yield very little in the way of furling worlds. as there would likely be only a few crossover worlds.
The furlings always felt like the one major plot thread that got dropped and never revisited leaving a massive hole in the 5th race arc, which spanded seasons 1-6. While we never got a true conclusion to the goauld or the wraith, we also had potential allies we never got to meet either sadly.
@@marketingwithwilliam Basically Daniel gets shifted out of phase and can only be heard by his uncle since he he went through the same experience but on earth. They are never given a name but are shown to be enemies of the snakes. They have a presence of wisdom that fits well with the other three races. It just fits.
What if... pure speculation, the planet the touchstone was found on was terraformed rather recently as carter speculated. The only other time a planet was ever mentioned being terraformed and created was in SGU by beings they dubbed, the Planet Builders. Could they be one in the same? Or coincidence.
My head canon is that we see a ship of theirs in the episode Grace 7x13. A super advanced ship with matter transporters and advanced weapons, reminded me of the Asgard in its advanced design.
My running theory about the Furlings is that they were possibly an extremely diverse set of species all hailing from the same planet, united under the one banner (similar to the Xindi from Star Trek: Enterprise) with the appearance of each race actually being the true inspiration behind the various helmet designs of the Jaffa Guards. (Which would also indirectly imply a secret Furling hand alongside the Ancients in the creation of some of Earth's wildlife)
I just introduced my boyfriend to the series and we binged watched it all till the end 🥰 I hope one day it'll come back k stronger but it'll never have the same personality as the show did. Too much time has passed
On a meta-level, I feel like the Furlings do a great job of expanding on one of the main themes of Stargate--that being, exploring bits and pieces of history and anthropology through the lens of sci fi adventures--by having this super significant and influential culture that we just don't know anything about. It's like how there are often bits and pieces of human history that we know essentially nothing about--like Egypt's friendly neighbours that no one knows who they are, or the vast amounts of Roman literature that were lost to the ages, or any number of other mysteries. Sometimes, history just disappears, and the Furlings are a fun way for Stargate to represent that (especially by joking about it).
It'd be so awesome to have them come across the Furlings randomly. Even if just to save them in space once and the mystery still survives but we know they exist. Even crazier, the Destiny gets where it is going and the Furlings are studying the structure. They had a friendly "space race" with the ancients or something but the ancients didn't make it.
I think the general idea of Goa’uld tech being stolen from a substantially more advanced race (with the Goa’uld understanding of it being relatively limited) is *very* strongly supported by the times Jack (with Ancient knowledge) was able to get massively increased performance out of it with seemingly-trivial tweaks.
I must admit that I was surprised to find out everyone thought they were basically Ewoks, because I never took their name to be Fur-Lings, but Furl-ings. I thought maybe they were a race that could fold themselves into pocket dimensions, essentially furling up like a flag. That they would be adorable and furry just never occurred to me.
Wait so they have a type of doorway that needs symbols to be dialed in order for it to transport you across vast distances. Where have I heard that before lol but seriously what of the furlings like the alterans independently developed their one stargate network that was both similar and different to alterans designs. This would make for an awesome spin off series mean think about it, the sgc find on some planet in the middle of nowhere space a stargate but one that is not of ancient design, it looks different, has different symbols with meanings they can't understand but being The Sgc the send a research team to study it and learn that the symbols are furling script and somehow they learn how to dial it. They do the usual stargate routine and send a malp through and find an abandoned location and then after getting a solid expedition team together they go through the gate only to find that they cant dial back but not being idiots they brought ancient communication stones to keep the sgc updated. Boom their is your spin off pilot
@@kokofan50 Actually, that is entirely possible within his idea, they could be extra-dimensional, so the team would be exploring an entire dimension that they themselves can not simply go back to Earth from, nor could anyone find them. Meaning the way that dimension works within the universe of SG could work somewhat or radically different to the mainline dimension. With only the ancient device ( for story reasons ) working as a gateway of communication back to the mainline dimension. It could give even more clue to how the Stargate works in a visual showing, and show how this gateway technology works differently to the mainline Stargate system. Meaning it wouldn’t be just an entire spin-off, but show entirely new races that have whatever going on between them in that dimension. Which could effect the mainline dimension indirectly, but never directly, allowing for a more science focus to occur when handling problems between mainline and the dimension the gateway goes to.
You know, growing up xfiles was my favorite show, I even named my kid Fox, but I recently started watching Stargate, and just finished SG1 over the past year, and I gotta say, what an amazing show and I can’t believe I missed it as a kid
Idk, it seems pretty reasonable to leave unanswered questions in a show about people exploring their local galaxy group starting with no idea wtf they're doing. It's not like they got brought up a lot, mostly just enough to suggest there's still a lot of unknown stuff out there.
I thought the furling were phase shifted giants, and they spawned societies from the pre colonial america's. Hence the crystal skull, and the nanite learning children.

Maybe the Furlings are still around but because they are using there own Gate Network incompatible with the known Stargate Network we just never meet them
the ancients gate device was an artificial wormhole and took a few seconds to transport matter from point a - b because of buffering and transforming a person into data
from what i understand about theoretical physics the fur-lings gate device was instantaneous more like an einstine rosen bridge or better example would be a folded space point a-b
I like the fact that never explained the Furlings. Some mysteries can only get less interesting after understanding them.
the young do not always do as they are told
I agree. Sometimes understanding is the booby prize.
Is this a shot at LOST? 😆
Thankfully, the Nox were also left a mystery.
Me too, I would love to make Heliopolis a capital of the interstellar alliance in the Milky Way
I always wished they gone back to visit Daniels Uncle after he went with the Giants.
Who wants to go back to Heliopolis?? Storms, no sand, no sun(s), not a single Casino!!! Better go to Vegas😁
Stargate Worlds, still a wound in my soul. What could have been.
Still onto hope we get a Stargate game one day. The best we currently have is No Man's Sky with its "stargates"
I‘m actually happy that game didn’t make it, it looked horribly un-fluffy and un-canon. Even worse than Startrek online.
i'm not sure i would've liked to see that game released with an "old anc lunky" engines for PCs of that era, with the scale of stargate if it's done it should be done now or in the future, with a proper engine geared for modern computers
@@gglovato well I think that Stargate Worlds was the last chance on that. Considering the modern gaming market, Stargate does not have enough "juice" to get produced now. Without being a mainstream success, the barriers of entry are currently too high.

Stargate - Empire at War and The Pegasus Chronicles which are pretty good ^^
I am all for the Furling's being the Giant Aliens met by Jacksons Grandfather via the Crystal Skull. Secretive the whole way through the stargate legacy and clearly smart enough to fall into that category.
That makes sense.
@@wpatrickw2012 The interesting thing is the producers and the writers have both indicated that the Furlings although not named do appear in the series at some point.
Greek mythology's gigantomachy could be the tie in for the history.

A galaxy far, far, far away right?
@@petert3355 quite right ;)
Exactly

Makes perfect sense they seem to have a penchant for Forest moons
In real life, Fur and the Furling language refers to an ancient civilization southeast of ancient Egypt occupying what is now called east Sudan hence the city of Da'Fur and there's actually a radio station still operating in Furling. The reference to the Furling only means writers of the first season were somehow knowledgeable about the ancient civilizations around ancient Egypt.
More evidence that the Goa'uld adopted Furling culture as their own?
The executive producer (if I'm not mistaken) mentioned in an interview that the Furlings never appeared in the show.
The Alterians are not the only ascended race. They've said as much.
Interesting theory.
Wow, for some reason my comment seems invisible. I might actually have a crystal skull after all.
My theory, the furlings just didn't wanna be reachable by gate, and only by space ship, hence why SG 1 never found them!
@@TheArtisticGamer7 Noted. Finally someone responded. :')
my theory they just made it up, and never had any intention of building on it in the show.
Ori couldn't find them
Your theory? Oh I see you're a fellow scientist as well, nice to meet you.
I miss Stargate so much, this TV show was epic, far deeper than it seems... thank you so much for reviving it
I said this on Beard vs Geek's video about this, but to avoid repeating it in various comments; I think the "Furlings" were the "guardian spirits" from the episode "Spirits"
-They were pacifistic and never harmed anyone
-They had the ability to circumvent dialing a stargate and thus prevent the creation of an unstable vortex
-Showed a sense of protection for Tonane's people (might be spelling the name wrong) and are shown trying to protect them from Earth's harming of the planet's mining
-Went unnamed and thus are likely to be the Furlings, despite what the name implies
-Finally in the episode their origin is stated to reference defeating Goa'uld, making them a possible candidate given the Alliance of Four Great Races
Its either them or the alien from the first season who lived underwater and kidnapped Daniel to find out what happened to his mate. Similar storylines
What about the, "Giant Aliens," from "Crystal Skull?" Or do we have a name for them?
The ascended Alterians have said that they are not the only ascended race. Furlings could be there with them.
Maybe they're the ones who taught the Ancients how to do it first.
Indeed. Also, didn't they mention that there's several planes of existence? Perhaps implying that other beings could be at an even higher plane.
@@tyrannicpuppy no, I think the ancients were the oldest and wisest race just from the way Thor talked about them.
Definitely my favorite show ever. I miss new episodes.
@@GateWorldDotNet couldn't the aliens from Foothold be the Furlings?
they are likely from another galaxy and are very advanced technologically.
They would be a great plot for a new show. Learning about the Ancients was always a really interesting part.
the Ancient of Days seems like a good mini-series if not a full show.
Thanks for clicking, Martin!
I really wish they could bring back the Stargate sg1 series and expand the universe more and finally introduce the furlings.
My head cannon is that we met the Furlings in the S3E21: "The Crystal Skull" and that Daniel's grandfather was off studying with them.
That lines up with the idea of them making/helping the Gou'ald. Pyramids and all.
I think Heliopolis episode makes it clear all 4 races can walk and talk in that Meeting place. And I think If the writing of Furlings and Crystal Skull planets civilization had any similarities Daniel would have hypothesize that.
Yeaaah I forgot about this advanced ancient species we see only once ! Very good theory
Wouldn't the Asgard database they got have all the info on the Furling they would want?
I bet it just says "They're actually lizards."
It probably has a lot of things in it that haven't appeared on screen.
That’s true. Thor did say it contained their complete knowledge.
Also I'm pretty sure they can ask the nox about the furlings...

I loved sitting on the couch with my grandad and watching Stargate SG 1 & Atlantis. I miss those days. The show and grandad gone,😢
Exactly, but the question is why the Asgard are not saying anything about it then
@@saladien9987 just need to search the asgard core. Interest in the furlings dropped off because of lack of threads to pull on as more grave threats were present through the show.

So they come from a planet covered in fur?
:D
Or maybe they furled: "To roll up and secure to something else."

Thank you for making this one. I've always wanted to see something on the subject.

I like the idea of the arch being a gift. Reminds me of Thors hammer
@@johnwang9914 "We are no longer capable of less sophisticated thinking."
Seems unlikely the Furlings would be immediately hostile like those aliens were. They immediately fired on the Prometheus with no provocation.
Not that most aliens would realize that.)
But the Prometheus tech is only Goa'uld inspired anyway.
There has ready been some exploration of the origins of the Goa'uld in the show, so that wouldn't really work.
Stargate was awsome, i just recently picked up the complete series. Looking forward to rewatching it all.
Hope they never delve too deeply into the Furlings. It's nice to have mystery.
The Ancients were ruined. At least the Nox are fine.
@@Ragitsu I dunno, as ancients looked like us, or more accurately other way around, I don't mind they went more deeply with them.
@@CrazyAjvar They ended up being a bunch of techno snobs once _Atlantis_ rolled around.
@@Ragitsu Hell, we are techno snobs right now. People who build starships that can run for milion of years are bound to be that in the end.
I heard that rumor too - the Furlings were going to appear in SGU.
The new Stargate show should revolve around the Furlings and their own gate system. I think that would be fantastic.

That was the game I was looking for, Stargate Worlds! Why can't we have great games like that. I would have loved to play that game.
Episode Grace
There is an unknown spaceship/race in it.
Maybe they were unfriendly Furlings because Prometheus was trespassing?
I was thinking the same thing. That could be one possibility. We never do get to see anything about that ship/race.
There were unfrendly Asgard in the pegasus galaxy so why not unfriendly Furlings?
@Karel Šlaj Uness like the Asgard they were no longer capable of thinking like humans. Humans had to save them from the replicaters.
The show kinda glossed over the fact that most of the time we'd only ever explore what's in walking distance of a stargate, leaving 99.999% of all the planets we visited unexplored :')
Stargate planet exploration was like, hey I visited this 300 pop village somewhere in the rainforest that happened to be near the gate and therefore I have "explored" planet Earth.
To be fair, if the planet is inhabited by a fairly advanced society like Earth you wouldn't have to go far to find out.

I double-checked the transcript for the star map scene in "Air, Part 1." They reference Destiny having traveled through Pegasus, but not Andromeda. Is this what you were thinking of, or am I forgetting another scene?
Stargate Universe could have found evidence of the Furlings’ existence if it wouldn’t have been canceled. They traveled through multiple galaxies.
I like to think that the Planet Builders/Obelisk builders from SGU are the Furlings
Stargate Universe was busy enough with love stories
@@michaelgillman2505 But weren't the Ori the left behinds of the alterrans, thus opposing them in the end? I thought that was made clear at beginning of season 9?
@@dr.topgun I think you are right, but also I think I wrote this before watching the Ori arc. I always had trouble staying interested after they defeated the Goa'uld
The Furlings would make a good mystery race for a Stargate revival like the Ancients were.
There were at least two species that could have been the Furlings in theory. In the first season when that fella who lived under water kidnapped Daniel, he had technology similar to the Asgard. And the folks who took the form of the Native America spirits a few seasons later. I dont think either species was named in the series
There were also those giant spectre aliens in season 3.
I was really looking forward to that game. I was obsessed with SG around that time.
I always thought they might be the ones who captured the crew of one of Earths ships inside that Gas cloud where they get outsmarted by Carter. That civilization seemed like they had pretty powerful ships given that the Asgard boosted Earth ship couldn't make a dent.
Wasn't that episode called grace? Anyway...I was thinking the same thing.
I just posted this same theory without reading yours first, I swear. Looks like there are other people who think this too!
@Richard Cranium 42 is the key to Ascension. The furlings are still trying to figure out how the ancients did it.

I always thought that if we met the Furlings it would be kinda funny if they were reptilian, just to mess with everyone's expectations.
To play with the "Goa'uld parasitized their Furling creators" story, perhaps the Unas are the descendants of the Furling scientists who were breeding Goa'uld on P3X-888. It would only take one generation completely bred as uneducated livestock for their culture to hit pre-language.
Awesome Video!!!!
I say keep them enigmatic like in the elder scrolls with the dwarves, some more hints would be interesting, but, keep them always 'just' out of reach, some mysteries are meant to stay that way
played the alpha of Stargate Worlds, combat was rough ... but dialing and finding planets was amazing !

It is possible, that the furlings had their own completely seperate teleportation based gate network. If this is the case, it would make sense that exploring the gate network would yield very little in the way of furling worlds. as there would likely be only a few crossover worlds.
So we need to find the sky lobby planet where you get off one elevator, errr I mean Stargate, and get on the other.
@@zeruty yes. But from what we've seen, even if they found it, it's not likely that the SGC would be able to operate it.

What if... pure speculation, the planet the touchstone was found on was terraformed rather recently as carter speculated. The only other time a planet was ever mentioned being terraformed and created was in SGU by beings they dubbed, the Planet Builders. Could they be one in the same? Or coincidence.
I like to think that the Planet Builders/Obelisk builders from SGU are the Furlings. Glad to know I’m not the only one that had this thought.
The Furlings covered their tracks extremely well ♡
They ascended to an even higher level of existence
It'd be so awesome to have them come across the Furlings randomly. Even if just to save them in space once and the mystery still survives but we know they exist.
Even crazier, the Destiny gets where it is going and the Furlings are studying the structure. They had a friendly "space race" with the ancients or something but the ancients didn't make it.
My unpopular theory: Goa'uld wiped them out or at least stole their technology. So all Goa'uld tech is Furling tech.
it is said that the goauld stole their tech....its a decent theory
Sounds a lot like SGU and Atlantis. I want something a little more creative
I don't think they should have been even referenced if they never intended exploring them more in an episode.
Idk, it seems pretty reasonable to leave unanswered questions in a show about people exploring their local galaxy group starting with no idea wtf they're doing. It's not like they got brought up a lot, mostly just enough to suggest there's still a lot of unknown stuff out there.
