A contract worth £2.8 billion was signed earlier this month to provide the British Army with more than 500 new armoured fighting vehicles. The Boxer is an 8x8 wheeled armoured transport vehicle, designed to move troops on to the frontline. We were given the chance to look at the Boxer up close 👀.

The modular concept can be seen from two perspectives:
The advantage is not only that any Boxer can now be quickly converted for a specific mission, but also that a roadworthy Boxer will always be available for a specific mission. The engine, the drive train and the chassis simply need to be maintained more frequently than a mission module.

As Europe, we should stand together and pool resources. Doing everything yourself is outdated thinking. The alliance has to have the capabilities and the interoperability it needs to be effective. If everyone does their own thing we grow weaker every day. That being said, I think since UK is already in Europe (and probably will stay here for a while), and in NATO, it should also be part of the EU.

@@unlink1649 Not saying they should cut all ties or anything, but the government has allowed British industry to wilt far too much to the point we're overly dependant on others, and as has been proven time and time again, when times get tough countries will look after their own interests first. For example during covid when France blocked essential PPE and then vaccines which where owned by and destined for Britain at the boarder to keep for themselves.
So it's important you can support your own backbone which can then be supplemented by your allies. It also creates much needed jobs, and income for the country.

why didnt anyone else order from the UK?
Because live "excecises" like Iran-Irak War, Invasion of Kuwait etc showed how bad british AFV design was and that scared any potential customer away, wich would go to the german KMW/Rheinmetall Leo1 and Leo2, modernised US M60A3´s and french AMX30B´s or russian T-72´s. The problem with "Modularized" vehicles is nobody ever actually changes the module once it's placed. You don't have a deep pool of spare modules lying around like the Thunderbird 2 hanger. So in almost every case the only time you ever need to be able to swap the module is in the factory. Modularity is a feature that looks good on the spec sheet. But if the mission calls for an ambulance, they just bring an ambulance. They've also tried the Modular concept with aircraft a lot over the years. Same thing. They configure the plane or helicopter once and only once to establish it's desired mission, and never change it again.

    • @jackmountain8503

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 4 роки тому

Jack Mountain Well yes. Lots of vehicle use the same chassis and share parts. That’s actually a good design feature. It’s the swappable mission payload element that is over engineering a feature that will likely never get used. And certainly never get used in the field. It’s the sort of thing that sounds sexy on the spec sheets. But it means you’ve got a couple of bolts holding the infantry compartment on, instead of just welding that sucker down for added protection. It’s pointless modularity because the only time anyone will be swapping mission modules will be down at the motor pool when they are seeking to canibalize and MacGuyver three broken down vehicles into one working one. Which they are perfectly capable of doing with non modular vehicles.

But also swapping out modules is relevant to modernisation etc.

Modular design is the thing now days. But with the module design here. You still need to have the modules and bases to put them on. So really the only thing why you'd do this, is that you can buy less bases and more mission modules and then switch out, instead of just buying exmp. 500 apc's and 50 ambulances, you'll buy 500 bases and 550 modules. I don't know if that's the best thing to do though. You can't just switch modules on the fly in the field. And you need other vehicles to carry the modules. x'D

not sure how practical modular design is. It's not going to come with multiple modules and you're not going to take modules without the rest of the vehicle so what's the point? The only advantage would be if the vehicle is damaged. You would then take off the module and put it onto a working vehicle. If this is the case then it would suggest that these are only going to be made available in very limited numbers for each operation.

15m turning circle are private SUV levels of agility and extremly good. a smaller car has around 11m. Yes it is not going to be a SMART or MINI, but it is significantly more agile than most MRAP´s on the market with higher levels of protection.
And considering that i live in a city with barracks, where Boxer´s are stationed and regularly move from there to the next traininggrounds on public roads.... they really dont have problems with normal city roads or normal european towns.
yes it may be too big for the roads of the historic core of some cities/Towns, but that is also a problem for more or less any AFV on the market.
look at REFORGER footage. rural german towns have been demolished regularly by comparably small M113 etc. Fences, property walls, signs etc have been destroyed by that on a regular basis.

just depends on the intended envirorment.
if you intend to do long offroad marches through heavy terrain tracks are certainly better.
But considering the increased urbanisation and the increased overlap of combat zones with urbanised zones and tactical and strategic deployments to said combatzones via roadmarches, wheeled vehicles outperform tracked vehicles.
Wheeled vehicles are faster, easier to maintain and require less fuel, resulting in a higher tactical and strategic mobility and deployablility in urbanised landscapes (like almost everywhere, unless you fight in antarctica or central sahara)
