- The "Seven Mile Miracle," a stretch of coastline on Oahu's North Shore, is the holy grail of big wave surf spots. It is also one of the most dangerous surf breaks on Earth. The lifeguards who patrol the beaches make upward of 1,000 saves per year, sometimes as many as 30 in one day. Tau Hannemann, a 15-year lifeguard veteran, is known as one of the best on Oahu. For Hannemann, lifeguarding is more than a job, it's a calling.

I meet this gentleman years back in Costa Rica. Know this , his surfing is big boy Zen
And now the law makers are gutting these guys and making them vulnerable to personal lawsuits.

Pipeline Jaws Nazare Mavericks and tuheapoo are the most dangerous in my opinion
Bondi Beach takes over 20,000 rescues a year. Also has many dangerous areas that more people would get rescued or injured on in a month, then this beach gets in 1 year
Rescues does not equal danger. 99% of people surfing pipeline are world class, the other 1% are surfers that are in over their head, or inexperienced tourists.

and following simple common sense advice such as "When in doubt don't go out!!" That'll prevent a dozen or so needless rescues for sure!

There are two types of people who surf Pipe: Those who have gotten injured, and those who haven't yet
Life Guards and US Coast Guard are the most under-appreciated professions in the USA. Too many people have no respect for the power of moving water. Playing in the surf is not for dummies.

Why do they put the lifeguard hut so far from the sea. That just makes it more difficult to get there on time. Like just think about it.
It has to be far enough back from the highest tide, which will make it look far during low tide, and it provides greater visibility of the whole beach area. On most beaches, individual lifeguard stands are dragged down & positioned closer to the water and spaced all down the supervised shoreline.
In the description it says that he's 15 but in the video he says he has been working on the beach for 14 years

I love these beaches and they are so magnificent and beautiful but one thing that surprises me every time I visit is how not swimable they are. Way too dangerous for even average swimmers or novice surfers.

Most of the people that surf Pipeline do it because the wave is nearly perfect, and for the adrenaline rush. It's only a stupid idea when tourists decide to go for a swim there or take a rental board out because "it can't be that hard."
