Does the new laws not allow for the offensive player to keep the defender away with a straight arm and open palm as long as they are not perceived to be gaining an advantage? . . . Personally I prefer the shield approach (bent arm) rather than a sword (straight arm) but I have noticed a lot of younger players instinctively go to the sword approach to create as much distance between themselves as the defender..
I'm not aware of any new rules that would allow the offensive player to push the defender with a straight arm. As always every ref calls it different, some are very quick to call that offensive foul and some allow quite a bit of contact. I've always been in the camp of why give the ref the opportunity to make that call, so I much prefer the shield as you say. And also getting your arm down allows you to hook your defender. You would never be able to do that if you have your hand up on their shoulder. Glad you liked, appreciate you watching.
