  • ABSOLUTE DEVASTATION IN ALASKA.
    Over 150 homes were flooded in Juneau when the glacier lake dropped flooding the area hear by. A state of emergency has been declared and many cruise ships have diverted from the area while they recover and evaluate the damage.

    It was suicide basin which is an area where glacier/ ice field melt accumulated. Its a lake formed by melt water and called by ice. When it releases, its like pulling the plug on an over filled bathtub. It happens every year, but last two years have been extreme. The heat is melting the ice field fast! I live in Juneau.

      @@bluegold21you say this with zero knowledge. If global warming is real we must stop all first world countries that are killing the planet for monopoly money. But blame the natural life of the planet. Bet you think Nixon received a call from the moon.

      Oil greed and ignorance caused the glacier to melt? Really? 😂

    • @grondhero
      @grondhero Місяць тому

      @@bluegold21 Sounds like your predisposition won't allow you to see anything but what you _want_ to see. Have you talked to an actual scientist or geologist in Alaska? Global warming isn't measured year by year, but decade by decades, preferably about 30 year intervals. In addition, the global warming you're insisting on is taken from places that are different than they were when initiated. Temperatures are supposed to be taken in a natural setting, about 50 feet or more from any building, street or man-made structure. With the grow of cities, the locations of the temperatures are often the same, but 'civilization' has encroached up on it, and the big city temperatures are often taken at airports.
      In case you've forgotten, the Great Lakes were _all_ formed by melting glaciers and all formed in prehistoric times. It's not like glaciers melting is anything new; it's been happening for millions of years.

    We need to realize that 100 homes may not seem like a lot to people who live in towns that have been hit by tornados, or flooding in places like Alabama and Louisiana, but getting the supplies and resources to recover is going to be unbelievably difficult in a remote area like that. And I’m sure that they won’t finish before the really cold winter hits. Praying for those people.

I am in Florida and there was a lot of flooding after this tropical storm Debbie. And though I had no flooding here, the retention ponds are very full. My point is, if there's even remote chance of flooding you need private flood insurance. The average home cost is about 450K.

    Hello. Thank You for the report. I used to live in Fairbanks in the 80's and the permafrost and glaciers were melting then. I love to look on Google Earth and make videos about the places I find. I just did one on the Juneau Ice Sheets and noticed the extra water everywhere. Back then, the furthest north a person could drive without a snowmobile, was the city of North Pole. Now we can drive hundreds of miles further. The Earth changes, but we usually can't notice the difference in our lifetime, but now we can. I don't think the caps are supposed to melt this quickly, but that's what we are dealing with. Be safe and prepared everyone! Anymore, anything can happen. The best we can do is try to be ready for anything.

    Actually, the final count of homes damaged/flooded was 290, which was way more than originally reported. As another resident of Juneau has said, Suicide Basin is a side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier. Since 2011, it has released glacial lake outburst floods that inundate the Mendenhall Lake and river 1-3 times each summer. Last several years, only a fee houses along the river were affected. Then last August, we had a record flood (crested at 14.97’) that damaged many houses along the river and even one fell in. Almost lost an entire condo building. This year, almost exactly a year later August 6, 2024, we had another record breaking flood event where the river crested at 16’. This time instead of just those along the river, we flooded inward about a half a mile in some places. It was devastating. Even though we knew about the potential of the flood 24 hours in advance, no one suspected just how much the valley would actually flood this time around. It caught EVERYONE by surprise. Many folks looked out their windows around the time it crested and didn’t see any water on their street. Then 1/2 hour later they woke up to 2-4 feet of water inside their homes (homes that were not expected to be in the path.) SURPRISE!!! Final count was 290 homes that were damaged by flood waters. The water came within a couple of blocks from my home. Juneau is a great community. We have come together to help our fellow neighbors in their time of need. Still a lot of work to be done drying out houses and ripping everything out. Hopefully, our government agencies and our community will put their heads together and figure out a way to prevent this. Not holding my breath.

    wow... What a mess. Sorry that the WP Rail was wrecked. I didn't hear details he mentioned earlier about cruise ships being reduced. We are going there next month. Hmmmm.

    How sad, an entire village wiped out. Seems like there is a black cloud over Alaska😢

      No. About 1-2% of houses in Juneau were affected. No homes were lost. The flooding lasted about 16 hours, and the worst affected homes had 4 feet of water in them. I live in Juneau. I assure you that 98% of Juneau was unaffected by the event.

    I hope the government treats Juneau better than they did Lahaina. 😢

    It technically was a dam bursting. A ice dam from the Mendenhall glacier, it happens to some extent every year.
