    I just bought a Sheraton 2, it's one of the best guitars I have owned and I have owned the Gibson 335 and this guitar plays and feels better than the Gibson. Mine is wine red.

      How the world we live in has changed, when people are favoring the Sheraton over the 335 - and it’s not a bad thing at all. I would love a 335, but I’m immensely tempted (in September 2019) by the Sheraton.

      Back in the day, Epiphone was a better brand and quality of guitar than Gibson, one reason Gibson bought them out and demoted them in favour of their own brand. This guitar, the Sheraton, is high on the Epiphone range (always has been) in terms of build, finish, features (binding, tuners - Grovers or Wilkinson typically, decent pickups - Gibson on some variants) and essentially an ES 335 without the acute headstock angle - Epiphones tend to have a less vulnerable headstock / tuning issues. John Lee Hooker called his Sheraton "an 'outdid' 335". I appreciate that modern ones are made in China and may be of a cheaper build, particularly on low end variants where pots and tuners may have a short life - but you can still find decent pre 2008 models that were made in Japan and later the Korean factory with a decent build, parts and finish - many owners claim these to be as good as the stock USA 335 now retailing for $2500 and these Epi's also used decent woods - maple , rosewood , mahogany etc and so a decent base for tone and sustain.
      As a qualification I have 3 Gibson guitars and an Epiphone Casino Coupe - I love the Gibsons but I am hard pressed to fault the Epi which cost a 6th of the US guitars.

      I've had a few expensive hollow bodies (ES-295, Coronado, 60s Country Club, etc) over the years, but ended up selling a lot of them and just keeping utility players. I recently received a Sherry for xmas and I love it more than all of the expensive ones I used to have. Once I swap the pups and harness, it's definitely my number one! It's chinese btw...

    I like Dave's commentary. It was helpful to see this set-up and get some specs.
    I have a Sheraton II. I had all of the wiring, pots and switches swapped out for a '59 335 replica set. I also put Seymour Duncans in - Jazz in the Bass side and JB in the Bridge. Lastly I put 18:1 ratio locking Grover tuners on. Pro set-up and I think I have close to a 335 for just a tad over $1k. I say close because I don't have a 335 around to compare it side by side.
    It's right up there with my '77 Les Paul Custom (sold- argh), '89 Fender Plus DeLuxe Strat, Ransom custom Strat and a few other guitars. It is actually my favorite.
    So, if any of this makes any difference to anyone out there, you can get a really fantastic guitar at a 'budget' price.
    Now, I'm gonna go play it!

    YANK THAT CORD!
    Watching this video in September 2019, I must say that for my temptation to purchase a (second) Sheraton, I would go with a vintage sunburst finish like this one, if my heart wasn’t already set on a natural finish.

    My dad bought a new guitar and gave me his 2003 Sheraton II. I have played guitar for fifteen years and the only electric I’ve ever owned was a telecaster. I still love my telecaster but damn, the Sheraton is such a nice guitar. It has more twang than other humbucker guitars like les Paul’s and es-335s and has a great voice and is much more comfortable to play than a les Paul. I still think the telecaster is the perfect guitar but the Sheraton is a really nice supplement even though I’m still getting use to the two tone knobs.

    • @stevenconrady1990
      @stevenconrady1990 8 років тому

      Epiphones are alright for the money, although the quality isn't the same as what it used to be. :/ I've owned about 3 Epiphones in my lifetime. the first one was a cheap special II the frets went dead on that one. I ended up selling it. the 2nd one I've owned was a Les Paul custom (made in Korea) that was the best guitar I've owned. I traded it for a Fender Mexican Strat. The Strat got stolen, so I ended up with a Les Paul custom pro (made in china) not the same quality as the MIK version but it still does the job.

    • @d0qtrx
      @d0qtrx 8 років тому

      I have a 96 Riviera (made in Korea) that's awesome. My first guitar, bought it on ebay like 6 years ago. It was a VT model, though the factory-installed Bigsby was long gone and replaced with a trapeze tailpiece, and the pickups had been replaced with GFS Dream 90 single-coil pickups, and the tuners with Grover-like (no Grover stamp, but identical style) tuners that feel pretty nice.
      I can lower the strings way down with no buzz. I put D'Addario .11s on there and it's great.
      I have no basis for comparison myself, but I have been told that it is a great-playing guitar.
      I think it's nuts to pay $3,000 for a Gibson when you can get a very good instrument for < 1/10th the price.

    guys I have a peavey t40 bass. I know he did a fix of the t40's brother and sister (t-20,t-60) but I'm having issues. First of all they don't sell the truss rod wrench anymore but it's a 5/16" like a les Paul. So I have fixed the issue for that but as I go to the higher frets, the strings are MILES away from the neck but fine on the lower frets. I don't know what to do, honestly.

      Yes, absolutely. Get a used one, as they don't hold their value at all. Also be prepared to do some nut and fret work. You'll probably end up putting some better pickups in it at some point too. Still all minor stuff and once you get over the cost of the tools (which will pay for themselves many times over), they are just about the best bang for the buck in the used guitar market. The only serious competition is the import Gretsch semi-hollows. Those are also excellent!

    Epiphone is just killing it these days... I just bought an Epi Les Paul plus top pro and its just a beast.. plays amazing.. sounds killer and is gorgeous in the honey burst. I prefered it to a 2016 gibson lp tribute I tried, not that that was a bad guitar, just not $ 400 better IMO . I'm not a cork sniffer so the Epi headstock doesn't bother me. After 40 years of playing you know the guitar doesn't make the player. I always laugh when people put down Epiphone and let them know the Beatles used Epiphones on every single album they recorded. Mccartney's acoustic Texan and Lennons Casino electric .

      Once I get it back into it's hole, I use an input jack tightening tool, (you'll find them online, or Ebay), once that tool is tightly inside, I then tighten up the nut, whilst the tool, holds the jack, still.. Job done!.. (once fallen inside a guitar, just get hold of an old input jack lead end, cut off the wire, and when left with just the plug, screw off the cowling/cover, then get it in a vice, and file the back to make it so smooth, it'll go through the input hole of your guitar jack) then simply take a screw, and screw a length of electrical wire into the end. get the electrical wire, push one end into the jack end' then screw it in tight! Thread the plug in through the input jack hole, till you see it through the "F" hole, (or sound hole, if it's acoustic), Pull out the dropped-in jack from the guitar, and plug the newly made jack-in...then simply pull' it through into it's original hole, and run the washer and nut down your electrical cable, it'll go right onto the jack, tighten up the nut till it's just holding, pull out the plug you made, then use the jack tightening tool, (or try to keep the jack still as you can with pliers), to tighten up the nut! You then have the job done, plus a great tool for next time!!... Regards, Chris...

Generally around 5% or so. It adds up. So for example in this video you could have links to the Music Nomad polish and detail stuff as well as the guitar string ruler etc. Those are things that I just went on Amazon to order after watching this video. I would have been happy to do it through your link to give you a commission if you had that set up. Its free to do so and you will benefit from it. - Thanks again!

    • @sleekmonth
      @sleekmonth 7 років тому

      I have an Epiphone Riviera that came with a stop bar I did that with. Just go to ebay and get one of the "Custom Made" plates that gibson used to use for their factory Bigsby conversions. That covers the stud holes.
      www.maxguitarstore.com/products/custom-made-plate-for-vibramate-mounting-kit/
      Putting a Bigsby on is easy if you aren't squeamish. You WILL have to drill one or two holes in the top of the guitar, but whatever. It's an Epi. Part of the fun is you don't ruin a $4000 guitar when you mod them.
      I got a $30 Chinese unbranded Bigsby, btw. It's a simple mechanism, I can see no reason to pay over $100 for a "real" Chinese made Bigsby.

      Listening through my headphones (studio quality), I'm fairly certain that the "buzzing" was caused by the pickups being too high, which can actually pull the strings closer to the frets, and cause them to vibrate in weird patters.

    • @rodeo11
      @rodeo11 8 років тому

      Very possible but I've never seen him do a setup without checking and adjusting the truss rod, especially after a complaint about fret buzz. Probably got too busy talking about Patreon and forgot to do it. How did his unplugging and plugging in of the guitar cable sound in your headphones (studio quality)?

    • @ghosthead2008

      Rod Dahl Actually, it didn't really bother me.
      In fact, I found it quite funny.:)

    The first thing I think about when I get up in the morning is hearing your video so that you can unplug a guitar with the amp on and listen to that annoying sound piss someone off. I think that you should just make a video doing that as many times as you can do that in 10 minutes. You could title the video: Dave's unplugged, and plugged.

    I love it. Beautiful guitar. But hollow bodies feed back. What do you do to avoid that? Ih ave 2 and they are virtually unplayable. Well if i don't plug them in they are fine.

      I always do. I keep the tailpiece as low as possible and top wrap the strings to compensate. The tail piece should be as low to the wood as possible. Not a new innovative procedure either eh ?

      Hey, Dave. I have a question about my guitar. I'll probably take it to guitar center soon to have it repaired under my warranty but I'd like to know if you know what the issue might be. I have a Squier tele (I'm a broke beginner) and the bridge pickup on my three-way selector is inconsistent. By inconsistent I mean that it woks sometimes, and others it's dead and it's like an off-switch. It's a big issue because it's my favorite pickup and I bought it like this...brand new. Any idea what it may be?

    • @Chrismayo1981
      @Chrismayo1981 8 років тому

      Cold solder joint, probably. Most likely on the three way switch.

    Gotta spend money to make money Dave- if your entire Patreon overhead is a buck or two to mail a sticker to the US... you're keeping a clean $10-11 for a $12 pledge - I think that's pretty good. Now also consider this.. anything like a sticker should have your web or UA-cam URL - now it's no longer just a sticker - It's an advertisement for your site. Assuming people stick the sticker on their vehicle or their guitar case - now you have a little mobile ad for your site which may get you yet more viewers checking it out... some of them will do Patreon... and on it goes. Smart marketers give away things that hang around a long time and promote whatever it is they're promoting. The best ones pay for themselves many times over. You gotta start thinking about this like a business 'bro. You now have 70,000 subscribers - man other UA-cam channels would KILL for that. THey say 70-100,000 is the critical mass where you can make the channel really pay - and you are there. So now do it.

    •  8 років тому

      Yeah, you can probably get some D'Addario strings to give away, Dave. They are giving them to everybody of late and you know your shit.

    if everyone of Dave's subscribers donated just $1 a YEAR, would be able to retire and not only repair guitars full time...but for FREE!! Think about that. UA-camrs could send him their guitars for free repair cause UA-camrs would already be providing an annual salary :)
