I didn't mention in the video, that the advantage to that particular set up (set up number 2) is that you only poke through the body of the sand crab once, and the sandcrabs will tend to move their legs more. With the number one set up, the one I used mostly on the Kahle hook, you poke through the body twice and the sandcrab will not move its legs much after you're done mounting it. But the advantage to set up number one, is that the sand crab will be held more firmly on the hook.
What's a Googan? I don't know if he was referring to the same or similar, but I think I heard Adam with Die Hard saying something about tips from the "Googan-Squad". I was wondering what or who he was talking about. It was in reference to getting tips on using the right kind of tackle.
This set up is good for this time of the year, when you most likely will get perch, but also have the chance of catching a striper. Both the size of the hooks and the size of the sand crabs I used in this video are ideal for that possibility (Perch and/or Striper). I've even caught some Cabezon in the surf using this hook up, and you know how large their mouths are.
The surf fish really go for them. You need to use the softer ones with eggs. If they can see the eggs when they are in the surf hunting, it is almost a sure thing.
Not at all. Better to use the soft shell, but you have to take the time to catch them. I did a video today in which I took the time to get my 50 soft shell. That one will be out in a few days.
Great video. I’ve really been struggling with my hookup ratio on perch, and these look like great strategies. My question is about hook size. You say in the vid that you’re using 2/0 hooks. Are these just targeting stripers, or do you use hooks that big for perch too?
Unfortunately the guy who made this channel and video, Dan Jensen, was the security guy attacked by skateboarders last year and had a traumatic brain injury.
No, they stay on long enough to catch a fish. You probably will be changing them out every 10 mins or so, but when you pull it back in, if nothing has taken a bite at it, the eggs will usually still be on there.
This is Dan Jansen, he had brain injury from attack, sad...u can google his story by his name and channel name....probably wont be able to fish ever again, sad
You put your sand crab in a salt water and a little bit of sand how long do they live? Because evrytime I put mine in a container the next day there dead lol
If I want to catch them the night before, so I will be ready to fish the first thing the next morning . . . I will harvest 50 nice sand crabs, and then fill a 5 gallon bucket with ocean water from the surf. Put just enough sand in the bottom so that they can bury themselves comfortably, and then dump the water the first thing in the morning. The reason for that is that the water starts to become toxic by the morning (waste, lack of oxygen bubbles) As soon as you get to the ocean, fill up your bait bucket with ocean water again and they should be good.
Actually you don't even need to add water, just a lot of damp sand covering the crabs. Last Saturday I caught about 20 or so and left my bucket of crabs in my garage. Got very busy over the weekend and forgot about them. Tuesday I remembered and went to check on them, dumped the bucket out and pretty much all of them were still alive!
Sounds good. It's possible that the sand soaks up all the waste and urine they put out, and keeps it from poisoning the sand crabs. Whereas, in the water without the sand or very little of it, the waste content gets to a certain toxicity level and they all just die. That would also save you the hassle of carrying a 5 gallon bucket of water off the beach.
HI there Pacifica Fisherman! As always your uploads are most interesting and informative though I have to admit watching the sand crabs being attached to the hooks was a bit grim. I wondered whether it was painful. At the end of the day however, odds are good that they will be consumed by other creatures of the deep regardless of whether they are on the end of a hook or not. Moreover it seems that they have become snacks for fisherman who gather them for them purpose of turning them into hors d'oeuvre. They (the sand crabs) when fried are said to taste like shrimp. The best part of the video however was the view of the beach with the chair and the waves rolling in and out. It looks to have been a beautiful day unlike the rainy and cloudy weather that seems to be all we get here in the East lately. So many thanks for that. Be well and prosper.☺
As always I appreciate the feedback from you, it is always very well said and thought out. There is this guy that I subscribe to, I believe the name of his channel is ""MyMoneyMyFood" or something close to that. He goes through an entire process of purging the sandcrabs and releasing any bodily fluids they might have inside them before working them up into a gourmet recipe. He also removes the shell from the sandcrabs before putting them into the mixing bowl. I might have to try that myself sometime. Perhaps I could do my own episode of such an event. I've never eaten them before! But one thing is for sure, if we ever went to pure survival mode on the local basis, it would be good to have the ability to harvest and prepare these creatures. I'm thinking someday I will do a video where I am not disturbing the other creatures for a meal, and rather just observing them as they live their life. My favorite part, as well, is always the view, the wind and the sound of the crashing waves.
Unfortunately the guy who made this channel and video, Dan Jensen, was the security guy attacked by skateboarders last year and had a traumatic brain injury.
BEST SANDFLEA HOOKUP I'VE SEEN
Thank you for sharing your valuable technique for using sand crab because I did't know how to use it
Awesome tips, thanks 😊👌👍
picturesque beach ya found there. Looks nice.
Huh. Never thought about hooking a sandcrab on a baitholder the way you did. Pretty clever! I'll have to give it a try the next time I'm surf fishing.

Always learning something new here. Thanks!
Im impressed with that hook up. Brillant.
Nice. What size hooks and how much sinker weight would you use with that surf?
He mention size 1/0 for the first method and 2/0 for the bait holder.
interesting way of exposing those eggs! appreciate the tips!
Thanks! That was very helpful!
i agree!
Very helpful PF. I will try this next time as I always seem to have trouble with hooking these guys, always flies off when I cast
Right on. See you around.
Bay and Beyond Fishing hahaha that's because we're perma-googans

Pacifica Fisherman a googan is like saying rookie
Thanks for the video on how to put sandcrab to a hook, I learn something new. What size of hook you were using?
Kahle hook was a 1/0 and the baitholder was a 2/0
Pacifica Fisherman Are they perfect size for perch ?
This set up is good for this time of the year, when you most likely will get perch, but also have the chance of catching a striper. looks like that is a popular bait choice!

Si no es para memos
sounds like Norm Macdonald
😂 I was thinking the same!
He looks like him too!!
Are you only using the hard shell sand crab?
Not at all. Better to use the soft shell, but you have to take the time to catch them. I did a video today in which I took the time to get my 50 soft shell. That one will be out in a few days.
Easy Instruction, well done 👍😎🎣🐟 new sub here
dear pacifca fisherman, thank you for the awesome video. may i ask which you're currently on?
That's Grey Whale Cove in Montara. South side.
Right here and right there. Did u catch any fish?
How often should I rebait after a certain amount of time letting the bait soak?
crabs arent likely to come off at all if hooked correctly. maybe every 10 mins to be sure, less if you use more than one and multiple hooks
Great video. I’ve really been struggling with my hookup ratio on perch, and these look like great strategies. My question is about hook size. You say in the vid that you’re using 2/0 hooks. Are these just targeting stripers, or do you use hooks that big for perch too?
It’s almost mentally therapeutic watching those fleas suffer while you drive the hook through them. Nice sabiki rig!!!!!
bruh whattt
😐
Awesome video! i will try this method next time i use sand crabs! what’s the best time of year you catch them and how do you catch them in your are?
Great video man!
No wonder why i couldn't hook them,😭. Thank you for sharing! I feel like next time i'll go fishing I will catch my first perch using sand crab!
Unfortunately the guy who made this channel and video, Dan Jensen, was the security guy attacked by skateboarders last year and had a traumatic brain injury.
@@AL-si4eo are you serious??? Wow ...how is he doing now?
They grow em big in California!
Does the eggs come off when u cast or when in water?
No, they stay on long enough to catch a fish. You probably will be changing them out every 10 mins or so, but when you pull it back in, if nothing has taken a bite at it, the eggs will usually still be on there.
what time of year is best to catch sand fleas
You can catch them anytime of year, but a higher percentage of them have eggs during the summer months.
Thank you
Drop shotting, wacky rigging THINNER worms/baits or nose rigging. They're extremely hard to bend, I mean really hard.
Thank you sir
oh, mole crab.
Boy I'm glad I'm not a sand crab..ouch !
This is Dan Jansen, he had brain injury from attack, sad...u can google his story by his name and channel name....probably wont be able to fish ever again, sad
I fish in this spot before and walking back up hill to the parking lot takes out a lot of energy.
Right. And all the gear you haul out there adds to the exercise factor.

Sand fleas?
Some people call them sand fleas or sand moles as well.

Dont put the crabs in water. It will kill them. Just a little sand.
They live in the Danm ocean
We got the point, go catch fish.
Don’t you need the hook point showing.
