5 Steps Guide: Door Hinge Replacement Alfa 147 (Applicable to FIAT 500)

The door hinges on Alfa Romeo 147's (as well as the fiat 500/Alfa 156, etc.) are prone to failure. A new handle costs hundreds of pounds from the dealership however the hinge part cost me £8 from ebay. Hope this tutorial will guide you through the process and save you monies from extortionate dealership prices. Took me 30 minutes to carry out this task. And one word of advice: Grease the hinge at every service intervals to prevent it from seizing and failing again due to rust.

Found this really helpful yesterday as the hinge was broken on the driver’s door on my GT. just a couple of points I’d like to share. I found it necessary to remove the glass in order to access the 10mm nut on the inside of the door. Not as daunting as I thought it would be just ensure the rear edge of the glass slides down the guide this puts it into alignment with the brackets holding it in the lifting mechanism. Secondly an offset screwdriver is a big help in removing the broken portion of the hinge from the door handle

I did mine a few days ago. Noticed the pin was seized solid on the broken piece. So yes, I lubed it before reassembly.

if you have a new door handle then you don't need the hinge steps you just screw out the old one and screw in the new one right?

You mean that plastic bushing? I was wondering that as well. I didn't use that or the screw that came with it, since I re-used the screw from the original hinge

I got a question though, I have absolutely zero knowledge about door hinges, and I ordered one for my gt (which is the same) but the little pin that keeps the 2 hinge parts together just slides in and out. Should I do anything to lock that into place before installing or will it just stay snug when the hinge is installed?

they should not be sliding in and out so you might have a faulty one.
