This really only works reliably for vertices. For faces and edges, you can end up with unwanted faces/edges selected if they are surrounded by the vertices in your selection. That is because it is saving the selection based on vertices no matter what mode you originally select things with. Hence, the name "Vertex" Groups.

+sleekdigital I totally agree. I wish that Blender had a way to do it the right way. Are there any add-ons that you know of that properly handle faces and edges?

+Bryson Jack It wouldn't surprise me if there were. I'll keep an eye out for such an add-on. I ran into this very issue today which is what brought me to your video. I ended up settling for vertex groups and then making the adjustments when needed.

+sleekdigital yeah, keep me posted if you find something. It is the best workaround that I found, and though not ideal for every situation it is definitely better than nothing.

Hey guys, this will seem kinda obvious, but I just assign a temporary material for saving face selections. The material tab also has select and deselect options, so it gets the job done in a pinch.

Actually, in Blender 2.80 you can save face selections using the "Face Maps" grouping. It is located in the "Object Data" panel. It works the same as vertex groups but stores faces instead.

Hello, is it possible to somehow save the vertex group that we need to blender settings or like a blender memorized action (if something like that exist)? The thing is that I need to edit a lot of identical individual objects in blender, and I don't want to go and select vertex manually every time. But when I use this tutorial it only applies the vertex group to the one specific object, and then when I import next one the vertex group is lost of course... Is there a way to save that action and just "magically" apply it (select vertex group) to each new individual object? Thanks!

For complex beveling sub-d support edge selections the best solution I've found is just to save it as a .blend file, your selection will be there when you reload.

    Add cube
    select two opposite edges
    add vertex group > assign > deselect > select > wtf ??

Yeah, I just double check it...definitely skip doing that if it seems unnecessary to you.
