You’ve be surprise that Tekton tools can keep up with big name brands like Snap-on, Marco,Cornewell. I work in a shop and they hold their own. Great buy and good quality for the money.
@Sid The sloth Tekton warranty is second to none. Take a photo or two and submit claim on website in 1-2 minutes. New tool shows up in the mail 1-3 days later. Have done it twice personally and twice for tools at work. All 4 claims were responded to in 3-12 hours and replacements shipped the same or following day. And I never even stepped away from my toolbox or workbench to do it. No idea about parts kits for their ratchets, but they'll likely replace the whole ratchet if you ask them to. And you get to keep the broken one for spare parts or to use as a beater junkyard tool.
I’m a heavy equipment mechanic haveveveruthing from HF to SO, I have a number of tekton tools and they are great. They are a good middle of the road choice. They don’t try to be something they aren’t. I had a 3/8 flex head that I warranted- used their app with a picture. Had a new one in two days - that’s better than the tool truck once a week.
I like that input. They’re excellent middle of the road. Better than HF and most big box store junk, but not the arm and leg price of tool truck royalty.
You may be able to get away with metric only. I am not mad. I don’t drive but I encounter Imperial and metric often enough I have both, but I have a 3/8 set only. It works for me. I hope this works for you. I do have 1/2 inch ratchets and a Proto 3/4 inch ratchet. This suits me. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. I see this becoming more common. You are smart. You can always add Imperial (SAE) sets later if you find you need them.
It looked like you had complete standard sockets in that Pittsburg set. Keep those for your occasional standard need. Just buy some more socket strips so they are just as organized. I was a long time mechanic but still have tools from Dad and Grampa or remnants of older collections. I just don’t have all of them front and center in my tool boxes. I continue to find uses for the other sockets: their length or thickness differs enough to be the right tool for the job; I need a sacrificial socket to grind/cut/modify/shorten/break in order to get the job done; or someone wants to borrow tools 😜!
Congrats!! I actually just bought the 1/4 3/8 & 1/2 ratchet socket set bundle & the torque driver set from Tekton due to my tools getting stolen. I look forward to when Tekton has the flex head wrenches back in stock. Gonna get that set & some more impact sockets. I personally have to have the standard on top of metric. But to each their own.
Been a mechanic for a long time, my starting tools were tekton, still have and use them every day along side my tool truck branded tools. Good choice my dude!!
Had the same harbor freight as my first set, now i have a small collection of tekton/stuff my dads given me, i keep the harbor freight set under the backseat of my truck, doesn’t get a ton of use but it has definitely been convenient to have there when needed
Nice set up. Moving into the future, metric is all you really need to start off with. My set up consists of nothing but tekton and gearwrench. Love both brands and have never failed me. 17k views ya definitely beat the 6 viewers you said you will have. Great video 👍
I just started buying up some tekton tools and so far I like them.. I hope they keep bringing more of them to the states to be made...I bought two of the us general tool carts from hf and metric in one standard in the other...red and blue...
Hansen global socket trays are my favorite for socket organization. some people complain that they take up a little bit more space than the basic rails, but they shouldn't take up any more space then what you have already
I agree it could work for awhile however sae is still used on a lot of lawn equipment and they’re good to have for removing rusty/swollen bolts where you need an “inbetween” size. Other then that, I would’ve went impact sockets over chrome because you can use impact sockets with ratchets.
No doubt! I think there are definitely uses for it! But I live in Arizona and think I'll be able to get away without them. I got the 1/2" shallow chromes because they fit in smaller holes (noice), but I think I'll end up buying 1/2" deep impacts for the high torque stuff.
I'm sure by now you have found out this type of endeavor is rarely finalized, add something and it changes the landscape. Starting new, like you are, my guess is you will find out organizing comes from use and visibility. If you are able to bring the work to the tools, you are ahead of the game. In my situation, I have to bring the tools to the work. That is no shop or garage, so that makes for many trips back to the tool chest. Anyway, I've been accumulating Tekton tools, and have been glad I did. Best of luck. Also, I'm old so I've been thinking dual standards SAE and Metric. When you mentioned going only Metric, I think you're on to something, I'll be trimming my tool bag back to Metric only and see that goes. I have a project coming up and now that I think about it it will require Metric only. Thanks
Awesome video. I recently just made my 1st tekton order for the ¼,⅜ and ½ socket sets with the ratchets, breaker bars and the cases. By the way the tekton socket rails are made by Ernst. On Amazon you can get the same exact ones Tektons have for sale but you can get them in a wide range of colors on Amazon. I want to get the green ones for metric and the blue ones for SAE. You chose a very good brand to upgrade your tool set from harbor freight. Hard to beat tekton. You absolutely crushed your 6 views you said the video would get. 😂 20k at the time of writing this. Keep up the good work.
I have the Allen wrench set and really like it, should have bought a nicely labeled set years ago. I got tired of dumping out all of the allen’s then sorting through for the size I wanted. The only reason I have SAE tools is because I have a bad habit of buying old Jeeps. One thing I would recommend is a set of mid length sockets. I reach for mine first pretty much every job. I have the Koken set in metric and LOVE them. Kinda expensive but super nice.
Gearwrench and now even harbor freight icon are a option for mid length 1/4, and 3/8 saw and metric chrome sockets id suggest trying the gearwrench sets
I've never used any of the SAE sockets from my Pittsburgh set besides the spark plug sockets. Everything is metric these days. Save your money until you need it! Great set up. I'm slowly upgrading to Tekton over time.
Couple years back I needed to update some 3/8 metric sockets. Got a set of Tekton shallows for 15 bucks (close out at Lowes) and 20 bucks for deep set on Amazon. I have Snap on, Mac, SK, Craftsman, etc.. I gotta tell you, these Tekton sockets are first rate!

90% off all my tools are tekton. Love their stuff. I don’t think you’ll run into issues with only metric. Unless you’re working on American cars from the 70s everything is metric.
Use the SAE sockets out of the Harbor Freight tool set until you can get the matching set from Tekton. I wouldn't worry about getting them anytime soon. Besides, if you break a harbor freight socket, they will switch it out without a problem.
You earned yourself a sub with this video. Just looking over your channel and I'm liking what I see. Keep up the good content, you'll gain subs fast 👌👍
I went with the Tekton 1/2 metric only as all of the vehicles I currently work on are all metric, but got both the 1/4 Metric/ SAE kit and 3/8 Metric/ SAE kit as you will find SAE on on all sorts of things ( bikes, old campers, gas powered equipment, furniture...) then i finally got both cord less impact and air tools so i HF'd for now but Tekton is on the list to replace/ upgrade due to the skipless sets. my old stuff has gone into a truck bag and tool roll which as i get more Tekton will grow.
How are the HF cordless tools? I’ve got a rule of “if there are moving parts, get the quality one” so I’m rocking ryobi 18V stuff for now, which I think is pretty middle ground on the quality/power/durability scale.
Keep the old HarborFreight special for the imperials, if you find yourself grabbing them often put them in the box or buy a nice set. I have just a few imperials I keep around.
If you are only working on vehicles metric is fine. Somethings still use SAE. It's even more so in the industrial world and utilities world. A lot of your farm and lawn equipment still uses SAE.
You should be able to replace the Pittsburgh 1/2 inch fixed head standard ratchet for the big set and it would still be ideal for a mobile kit for in the vehicle in case it breaks down,i believe harbor freight sells that ratchet separately as well and so does kobalt and they have a pro90 tooth version should still fit in the case
I would probably pick up a 3/8 drive SAE set of shallow and deep (6pt only) just to be covered for non automotive projects Also I see a bike stand there, I would recommend an “investment” in a set of Wera brand L keys in metric (with the silver color finish) they run around $30 per set and are far superior to the Tektons… and no disrespect l’m a huge Tekton fan
Yeah I’m keeping a few tools from the hobo freight set as a tool roll for that kind of stuff just in case. Yeah I went park tool for all my bike stuff and haven’t looked back since.
@@motolayne park tool hands down best bike specific tools out there. I worked at a bike shop for 5 years.. and park tool makes great specialty tools for bikes /bike shops also.
I don’t have a lot of experience with vw but in general you will rarely need 12pt sockets. Having only metric will also probably work 90% of the time if not more. Once you use the tools enough you won’t worry about not being able to see the sizes, you’ll just know which ones are what.
Yeah man I just tore the drivetrain out of my jeep and used 12 pt a handful of times. 100% needed, even though you won’t use it much. I’ve used them everyday for the last 2 weeks and still wish I could see the sizes 😂 agree to disagree I suppose.
Yeah drive shaft bolts are one of the few times you’ll need them, and wheel bearing bolts and some caliper bolts on dodge…. I guess you do need them lol. To be fair 2 weeks isn’t really enough time to familiarize with your sockets, give it half a year, if you use them enough you’ll know what’s what
Oddly my driveshafts are 6 point, but 2 transmission bolts are 12 and one transfercase bolt is 12. Also jeep 4.0 headbolts. I think that’s it’s though. None on my VW, but there is the awkward triple square which is close, but no cigar. My entire jeep build will be done well within 6 months. Sure I’ll eventually get there, but then when I have a guest it takes them 8 years to grab me a 10mm, ya know? And the fix could be so simple like molding it into the trays.
Both Jeep and Volkswagen are metric. However, add ons to Jeep could be standard. Where is the impact solution? Oh, I got cheap iridium magnets and lined the left side wall of the same tool box. Then slapped my sockets there, I can see the sizes. Also have 3 magnet trays on the side with them. The right side has my Milwaukee impact. You’re missing the Milwaukee 1/4 inch, 3/8th impact, and 1/2 impact, along with the impact sockets. If budget and space are concerns get the 1/4 impact gun and sockets to really speed up jobs.
@@motolayne at work.. the chrome 1/2 SAE and metric short and deep for a couple of years. The angled wrenches for a year. The 1/4 drive which I use almost daily for about two years. At home , my TEKTON impact shallow metric and SAE use to be what I used at work. Metric wrenches for two years. The 3/8 chrome sockets for about a year.. the 3/8 ratchet has been super smooth.. The only issue I had was that the impacts was kinda thick and that is the only reason a replaced them at work. But I hear the newer ones are sleeker. We have the 3/8 impact Master set and ratchet wrench set on our service truck at work too.. been happy ..
Hey Layne, nice set! I've started buying Tekton myself. Love the tools. One question though bud, exactly what Husky tool box is that? I bought a U.S. General from harbor freight but the drawers are 1.75 inches deep and barely fit tools. I want to return the box and get a Husky one. I've seen that got quite a few. Just wondering which one you have because everything fits nicely inside. Thanks!
It’s definitely a great start to a solid tool collection. I’ve got this one: www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-46-in-W-x-24-in-D-9-Drawer-Gloss-Black-Deep-Tool-Chest-Mobile-Workbench-with-Hardwood-Top-H46MWC9V2-C/313833944
Yeah I’ve still got the old kit that I’m going to turn into a truck/ junkyard tool roll. I’ve torn down my whole jeep and so far haven’t even had to think about SAE.
@@motolayne ive had them for 6 months. Use them everyday. I just use a clean shop rag to wipe them down. Cant lie I haven't done a deep clean on them yet. But they seem to clean up pretty good.
Good to hear they’re holding up. I figured if I was a tool company, I’d cut costs on finishing. I almost want to buy a sonic cleaner and toss them in and forget about them
Don't get rid of the old stuff keep it for junk yard road kit and you never know when you need to beat on or modify something old stuff comes in for those situations to save your best tools taking a beating
I'm a truck driver and I drive an audi TDI. I simply can't get by with just metric. PACCAR semi trucks are mostly sae but some metric, and my audi is all metric.
I'd say at least add a 3/8 sae socket set and a wrench set. Metric is more common but without and sae you'll definitely run into sae fasteners. And a lot of stuff around the house uses sae fasteners.
Yeah I’m gonna build a tool roll for junkyard/house projects. I’m with you though, if I didn’t have them as emergency use, I’d find a ton of SAE fasteners 😂
@@motolayne I’ll be honest I haven’t played in Over a year. I got 99 str after playing since 05 an i left it at that lol. You know how it goes.. quit for awhile and then return.
How is the tool organization going? I would say it will depend on what you work on. Most things these days are metric. If you plan to work on older american car std tools will be needed. Some heavy equipment also uses std. But if all you will work on is imports, than you are good.
That’s a very good way of putting it! Us weekend guys don’t need $10k+ of tool truck brand gear. Tekton is miles better than box store junk, a perfect medium.
90 percent of what you will use today will be metric today. I have both but rarely use standard anymore. You made the right choice in tekton tools ! If you have any questions about them message me back?
With 90 tooth ratchets do you still need 12 point sockets? The money you'll save not buying 1/2" drive 12 points could pay for a good chunck of your 6 point SAEs in 1/4" and 3/8".
From the rest of the comment section, it seems like most people only use them for older American cars, lawn equipment, or rusty bolts. Luckily, I have none of those!
I only have metric....but, I have a Volkswagen and an Audi, lol sooo....and I refuse to buy another American car. I bought Tektons Impact 3/8 and 1/2; both in Deep 6pt, shallow 6pt, and shallow 12pt. 1/4 I bought non-impact Deep 6pt, shallow 6pt, and shallow 12pt. I figured if Im needing a deep, I should have the room to only need a 6pt. I also think as a DIY'er Tekton offers great quality for a very reasonable price. I really don't feel anyone else beats them in comparison. I've been buying VIM for other more 'specialty' VAG tools: Torx, XZN, Hex, etc. They're much more expensive, however the quality is absolutely impressive for the their price as well. Either way, you've got yourself a nice set; congrats!!
Bro my first video is of my GTI and German specialty tools are made by the devil. Like why are half the suspension bolts tRiPlE sQuArE 😂 I suppose that’s another point to debate. I feel like 8/10 cars don’t need impact sockets. With a torch, I’ve never broken a chrome socket and they get into smaller spaces.
@@motolayne Hah! Yeah, if you haven’t had a German car before, welcome to the world of, “yes there’s an expensive tool for that” 😭 Yeah, I have the 1/2 & 3/8 Harbor Freight Earthquake impact-which work just fine for me. So, mostly, the impact sockets just give me an option to use the impacts when needed. I have an ‘08 Audi A3 with a 2.0T. Very similar to your GTI; pretty much the same platform, really. I also bought a VW Passat GT 3.6L VR6, just over a year ago. Also the Tekton socket trays are made by Ernst Manufacturing. Some of them are cheaper on Amazon. For example, the socket fasteners that attach to the rails are $10 for a 15 pack. Just in case you wanted to save a few bucks. Rolling through you Jeep videos right now. I also subscribed 😉
Man I seriously considered replacing my gti with an s3 but couldn’t justify the huge cost increase over a golf r 😂 My dude I appreciate you. Keep spreading your knowledge!
@@motolayne Yeah, the price difference, imho, between the Golf R and the S3 would purely be quality of interior environment. Audi interiors cabins are nice places to be; but, for the average person it’s not worth the money-especially in today’s market.
You hit the nail in the head. Used Audis (all cars really) are just as expensive as new ones right now 😂 no doubt the cabin is a plush, comfy place to be, but I’m usually only in my car for an hour at the most 😂 I’ll gladly accept the cloth seats and less sound deadening in exchange for $10k of performance parts.
For one it doesn’t matter if it bothers others on what you have or don’t. My race car requires both Standard and Metric, so unfortunately for me the bill is doubled. Onto Tekton, I did just recently find them myself and they seem nice. Ordered a couple sockets and wrenches to test at work before I get some for my own garage. How have the tools held up for you? After the “new” factor has worn off, are they still a good purchase?
Racecar tax is real 😂 after the newness wore off, they’re still fine tools. I learned that I don’t care for the flex head ratchets but the organization and sheer wholeness of the kits make jobs much more enjoyable.
@@motolayne I’m going to buy craftsman for now, $40 for metric and standard. But I will upgrade as soon as tekton are available. I think I’m time they will

That’s genius. I’ve been meaning to build out a mobile/junkyard tool kit and that might just be the perfect swap.
I would probably pick up a 3/8 drive SAE set of shallow and deep (6pt only) just to be covered for non automotive projects
Also I see a bike stand there, I would recommend an “investment” in a set of Wera brand L keys in metric (with the silver color finish) they run around $30 per set and are far superior to the Tektons… and no disrespect l’m a huge Tekton fan
I just updated my tools from Craftsman to Tekton. I have owned and inhierited Craftsman all my life. And I am 58 now.
Dang that’s a huge compliment and testimony to how good Tekton is! How do you like them so far?
Can't go wrong with TEKTON. Most of my home box is TEKTON and I use Some professionally also.
How long have you had them? How have they been wearing?
That’s awesome! Glad to hear they hold up long term!
Like the Pittsburgh kit. Hate the box. Sockets always fall out
It was a great first kit!
When should u replace? when they break
It will work for the most part. Maybe just add a sae 3/8s drive set as a backup.
Yeah I’ve still got the old kit that I’m going to turn into a truck/ junkyard tool roll. I’ve torn down my whole jeep and so far haven’t even had to think about SAE.
@@motolayne you should be good to go! Love the tekton haul. I use them everyday as a professional mechanic
How long have you had them? Also do you clean them? Tearing down my engine got them DISGUSTING.
I almost want to buy a sonic cleaner and toss them in and forget about them
Links for the rest of the stuff sockets and all that?
www.tekton.com/impact-drive-sockets/impact-socket-sets to buy them direct from Tekton. They offer a sweet rewards program.
Good stuff man
Hey thanks!
Don't get rid of the old stuff keep it for junk yard road kit and you never know when you need to beat on or modify something old stuff comes in for those situations to save your best tools taking a beating
I think I’m going to make a trail/ junkyard tool it from it, but I need the huge box to be gone 😂
I'm full metric as well, all my cars are metric so I didn't bother with SAE. No point in lugging around twice the weight to not use them.
It’s genius really. Not only twice the weight, but twice the room in your toolbox and twice the money out of your project!
I'm a truck driver and I drive an audi TDI. I simply can't get by with just metric. PACCAR semi trucks are mostly sae but some metric, and my audi is all metric.
No doubt man
I'd say at least add a 3/8 sae socket set and a wrench set.
You should be good with metric. Pretty much everything is metric unless you are working on something domestic and old
Sunex is my fav. Just got a 3/4 tekton socket set though!
That’s a big boy socket! I’m also a huge fan of OSRS. Are you playing Melvor Idle?
@@motolayne I’ll be honest I haven’t played in Over a year. I got 99 str after playing since 05 an i left it at that lol. You know how it goes.. quit for awhile and then return.
It’s true. You never truly quit!
Love the video
Hey thank you!
How is the tool organization going? I would say it will depend on what you work on. Most things these days are metric. If you plan to work on older american car std tools will be needed. Some heavy equipment also uses std. But if all you will work on is imports, than you are good.
It’s good! Currently working on a “bits and bobs” project- 3D printed bins. The only imperial sockets I have to use are spark plug specific.
Great set up!
Dude thank you, it makes my OCD tingle 😂
What kind of red trays are those?
Teckton has labels for there socket rails check them out
Yeah since this video posted, I had them sent out 🤙🏼
90% of my tools are gearwrench, Tekton and Icon. I feel they're already luxurious for a weekend worrier.
That’s a very good way of putting it! Us weekend guys don’t need $10k+ of tool truck brand gear. Tekton is miles better than box store junk, a perfect medium.
Good video.
My wife was listening in the back ground and said, “Love ya too!” I replied, “who are you talking to?”
Heard it here first, this man’s wife loves me back!
90 percent of what you will use today will be metric today. I have both but rarely use standard anymore. You made the right choice in tekton tools ! If you have any questions about them message me back?
Which standard sockets do you end up using?
@@motolayne I use 3/8 and 1/4 on my exmark mower but all metric on my vehicles
Ah! It seems like most people only use their SAE on lawn equipment or around the house.
With 90 tooth ratchets do you still need 12 point sockets? The money you'll save not buying 1/2" drive 12 points could pay for a good chunck of your 6 point SAEs in 1/4" and 3/8".
Definitely need 12 pt for the 12pt bolts 🤙🏼
@@motolayne Fancy
They’re few and far between but even my $500 Jeep engine’s headbolts are 12 pt
i think metric only will work. my sae stuff keeps getting rehomed to smaller and smaller spaces over the years.
From the rest of the comment section, it seems like most people only use them for older American cars, lawn equipment, or rusty bolts. Luckily, I have none of those!
I'll buy metric tools over sae any day. First off its just easier vs going to look for a 15/16 or some dumb fraction.
Seriously and even on SAE bolts, metric works 9.9/10 times!
What warranty does the tekton include?
Lifetime replacement
@@motolayne How do they compare to icon from harbor freight?
Unless you're working on something old school, you'll get by just fine with metric tools.
Like why are half the suspension bolts tRiPlE sQuArE 😂
I suppose that’s another point to debate.
Man I seriously considered replacing my gti with an s3 but couldn’t justify the huge cost increase over a golf r 😂
My dude I appreciate you.
How much cash back did you get on all of that haha. I have a good bit of tekton lately
They had 15% cash back through Christmas so I got back just under $150. Which is also testament to how many tools you can get under $1000.
@@motolayne I also bought a couple hundred worth when they did that 15 and I think also they did a 20 percent back too
@@FlaGatorL 20% is amazing! It adds up too. After a few purchases you have a bunch of money back.
Rarely your going to use sae size unless it’s nearly aftermarket or it’s on an older vehicle
My thoughts exactly! And I don’t have plans for an older domestic vehicle any time soon 😂
I need tekton to make line wrenches
I just filmed another video on how I wish tekton would make more specialized tools 😂
@@motolayne I’m going to buy craftsman for now, $40 for metric and standard. But I will upgrade as soon as tekton are available.
I think I’m time they will
I think you’re right. Crazy to think tekton is an upgrade!
@@motolayne yeah craftsman is absolutely trash now. And I have quite a few tekton tools and I’m absolutely satisfied.
How long have you had them? Did craftsman outsource to overseas?
Unless it’s an old asf car or a lawnmower you will never need a standard
Everything is metric for the most part the way it should be fuck the standard system
The way it should be 😂😂 as if we’re not back to back world war champs
Well 90% of everything now days is metric anyways. The only real time sae comes into play is if your working on old school muscle cars/trucks. So what anyone says about buying just metric doesnt matter.
I found my downfall: spark plug sockets
@@motolayne lol 16 and 21mm spark plug sockets. Its ok the metrics wont be mad at you for a couple sae soclets lol.
They’re banished to the back of the drawer, hoping to never get seen 😂
@@motolayne 🤣🤣
I am pretty sure you will get away with just metric. Obviously this video is 1 year old. How has it worked out?
It’s worked well so far! I should really make an update video
So much for the "6" people who are gonna watch this lmao. I liked the video.
Yeah that comment didn’t age well 😂
"for the 6 people who watch this" that didn't age well
No it did not 😂
UM UM UM UM UM UM UM UM Could possibly say UM one more time?! Expand your vocabulary, man!
Excellent comment, thanks bro
“3 people are going to watch this” *gets 2k views*
Apparently tekton tools are hot 😂
