  • Synopsis
The Crusader states are established in the aftermath of the 1st Crusade. However, the position of the Latins is not certain. In 1144 Edessa falls launching the ill fated 2nd Crusade. The Islamic world bands together and new leaders arise to contest the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Meanwhile, the Byzantine Empire enters into the time of the Komnenian Restoration, and while a high point in the history of the Eastern Empire, it would also be its very last.

Ok lovely people! Finally got part 6 up and running. Now keep in mind, I edit these videos with headphones (when my little one takes his naps) so listening to them with headphones is the way to go as the sound is formatted for that. I already have the narration for part 7 done so I'm hoping to have that out soon as well. Please don't forget to spread word about the podcast and share on social medial!

If Crusades were a movie series from the Chrisendom perspective:
1st Crusade: A near masterpiece but with questions existing over how to follow it up.
    2nd Crusade: A very disappointing follow-up
3rd Crusade: An imperfect but an incredible franchise reviving film nonetheless
4th Crusade: Wow they really really jumped the shark here, and ruined the whole franchise. Please please fire the director, producer, and lead writers. This was so bad.
5th-9th Crusades: A DVD mini series that was mediocre with a few okay points but didn't amount to much. Partially because of much the fandom had lost interest.

I find myself rooting for the Byzantines. They withstood so much! And what an amazing restoration with 3 great emperors in a row. Sadly, I know what happened in 1204. If you're not an expert on Eastern Roman history, you could be forgiven for thinking it was the Seljuk or Ottomans that doomed Byzantium, but one could argue it was actually the Crusaders. Such a shame. I really like the Byzantine Empire.

I agree that 1204 was a tremendous blow - but even leading up to 1204 the Empire was wrecked internally. After the Latin occupation, I'm surprised the Empire even made it to 1453

It's ironic that from 1180 to 1204, the Byzantines had no good rulers, thus leading to its rapid collapse. But the Nicaean offshoot that sprang up after 1204 and eventually retook Constantinople in 1261 had a pretty much unbroken succession of capable rulers. If they had someone like a John Doukas Vatatzes right after Manuel Komnenos, 1204 never happens.

11:55 I think the Norwegian crusade (1107-1113 AD) helped in the restoration. A pity is not even mentioned.
After helping the Baldwin in taking Sidon (named after king Sigurd) they sailed for Constantinopel. There Sigurd wanted to see the great city his Great Grandfather Harald Hardrada once served as the captain of the Varangian guard. "Yes the one at Stamford bridge 1066"
Before leaving Constantinople, Sigurd gave all of his ships and many treasures away to Emperor Alexios. In return the emperor gave him many strong horses, for him and his fellow kinsmen. Sigurd planned to return to Norway over land, but many of his men stayed behind in Constantinople, to take up service for the emperor as part of his Varangian Guard.
