This is my all-time absolute favourite, irreplaceable, one-of-a-kind masterpiece. It takes me places and holds so many memories for me as I used to listen to it through darkest of times. I don't listed to it very often as I absolutely melt away whenever I feel like I need to come back to it. I wish more people would know about this and appreciate it. It will forever be the OST of my life.
IMPORTANT CREDIT: Hope Sandoval (of Mazzy Star) sings on this song. She also co-wrote the song, writing lyrics and vocal melody (as she also did on Massive Attack's "Paradise Circus," and more recently (2017) on "The Spoils" This song is Massive Attack + Burial + HOPE SANDOVAL!
10:15 : Burial's sample from Fostercare 11:23 : Burial's sample from Ghost Hardware I love how Burial uses samples from other songs made by him, like in Ashtray Wasp, there's a sample from Endorphin.
from that first "sigh" , this is like being CRUSHED lovingly to death, by millions of tons of good intentions, and positive thoughts. Loved to death...loved, but killed by it. So painful, yet, so wonderful. Not sure which part makes me choke up....but i cant stop listening. I nominate Burial for living God status.
Almost safe to say we are living through a musical renaissance. This music is quite literally like nothing ever produced before by human beings. Remarkable to consider the implications of the music we are living through. Thanks for sparking ideas. Cheers
I think this is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever came across. After the intro the singing and distortet instruments just takes you to another foreign place which is a wonderful mixture of melancholy and beauty. It just touches your soul kind of. I am not a fan of all of Burials work, but some is just outstanding.
+Peter Krüger totally agree with what you just said but just one question.. How could anyone who appreciates amazing and deep and melodic & lush and soulful music not appreciate Burials other work? Can not understand.. I make no apologies for sounding like a fanboy but he really has the ability to connect with the soul like almost no one else can, to create a sense of calm in amongst the chaos of whatever your current experience may be.. that is the power of music when its used to its full potential, and he does it like almost nobody else can..
Dan Harvery I doubt he meant he doesn't like anything else from burial, just that he doesn't like all of it since some of it is very very different from tracks like this. His first album for instance, and lots of others like south London boroughs aren't the same musically. Burial seems to have two sides with his music; this side, which is very moving and beautiful; and the other side, which is harsh and desolate. Pirates for instance is worlds apart from come down to us. So it's completely understandable that someone connects to the more soulful music from burial, but not the heavier tunes.
Agree 100% Dan. There is no such thing as a poor Burial track. IMHO. Has been my favorite artist since 2006. Never get tired of anything released by him or mixed by others. Oh yeah, unapologetic fangirl here. =) Couple of my faves are Rival Dealer and this gem. ua-cam.com/video/J9X8P05jVlc/v-deo.html
9:40 onwards is one of the most powerful pieces of music ever written in my opinion, i'd even put it on par with an ending by brian eno and that is saying something
11 years and I still want to have an imprint of this in my brain, like a tattoo but aural . A chip. AI. Whatever. I cannot think of a more perfect piece of music. Soothes my soul like nothing else
The part 9:42 onwards really is the most magical antidote to the dark, brooding first half of the song - its like the light at the end of a dark tunnel
Did the sun never rise? Is the night void of all other humans? Can you not remember your name? Well sit down and fall apart into this, you'll never return.
The torrent of sounds here hit all at once and they absolutely crush and smother me with sound. I love that. It's so chaotic and targeted; it assaults the listeners but also in a sense where it's like "it's ok, just take it all it; let it consume you". Absolutely entrancing and fucking beautiful.
This is an otherworldly work of art. Not so much a song as a sonic voyage. So much atmosphere and beauty that it almost hurts. What an incredible collaboration!
They know that I can't settle down They know but they won't keep me in line, in line They know that I want his liquid They know that I'm not her breath They know that I can't settle down They know but they won't keep me in line, in line, in line These four walls have eyes, got lost on the way They'll hold me a while till he thinks that way, till In line last night held the light Down to save me from pain, happiness can lie Remembering our lost home (our lost way) In line, in line, in line till we're lost, I forgot
Just curious: will we remember Burial a hundred years from now? How will future generations asses his form of musical expression? Anyways, unfathomably deep cut. Thanks for post!
Just like people throughout history have failed to realize the influential periods they were living through, I think most individuals today fail to recognize this wonderful musical period. It's mostly because this music is off the beaten trail and it isn't "cool" or "normal" to listen to. I think in 100 years music classes will analyze Burial, Massive Attack, and all sorts of off-beat musicians, because they have definitely hit on something emotional with the music they are producing.
Are there anti-piracy rings in this song (3:44)? Or is this intentional? I am no sure, could be in the song. Could be added. Does anyone know if it's also on the vinyl edition?
I got a copy of this on vinyl and the retail is the highest I have paid for any vinyl ! But the quality of the hand made art sleeve and super low quantity of the release by 2 huge artists was a no brainier on it increasing in value !!!! But non of that matters as much as this being an extremely beautiful piece of music !!!!

This music saved me from a dark swallow of depression. I actually have the cover art as a tattoo on my chest. Much love to MA and Burial 💙

One of the most amazing things a person can hear.

@Jonathan Willow So what's yours Mr. SMEB? Christina Aguilera I suppose.
Better than Nova!?
i absolutely adore the last ambient part 9:45. its so uncanny, so beautiful, just wandering free. like watching a hectic city in slow motion
Easily one of my favorite pieces of music. The ambience is so powerful
