There is a reason advanced analytics have been saying Derrick white is a top 15 player since his spurs days. Elite defender, amazing on or off ball as a playmaker/connector, never makes the wrong reads, elite shooter, unselfish player. He’s the best rim protecting/shot blocking guard ever. Since he doesn’t average 25ppg he won’t get recognized but he is an all-nba level impact player there is no more denying it.

I mean Ainge left Stevens with a great core talent to work with. Though Stevens' job I'd argue is harder because he has to assemble a championship team with the Jays being proven in the playoffs. But being around Ainge and seeing his weakness with holding onto assets too long showed that Stevens has to be more aggressive to help the team peaking with their stars. And also finding more value on 'overlooked' first round talents that are one dimensional. KP embracing his role as the 'big man' shooter is huge because most of them are in the Wester Conference now.

As a spurs fan, white has said he watched a ton of Manu. White can set an offense, run pnr, get downhill or shoot, play off ball, elite iq and shooting, defends like hell. All these small traits that Manu had he has. He’s not electric with the ball like Manu but he’s impactful. Get deeper in your talks there is a lot you guys didn’t uncover with White still…

    • @granthoops
      @granthoops 4 місяці тому +38

Manu and Derrick are very similar. Lots of Spurs fans said it and we don't throw around Manu's name cavalierly.
Both came into the league as old rookies. Both guys didn't realize how good they were; deferring too often offensively. Both are willing to do anything to win a game. Take 5 charges and loose a tooth. Manu and Derrick's hands elbows and head end up on the hardwood more than most NBA players. Everyone says they want to win, but I don't think many people actually follow through on doing anything to win. It's fun to score 25 in a win but you know both guys are happy to play an uglier role to win the next game; scoring 6 points but providing elite defense and extra hustle on some rebounds or forced turnovers.
From a peripheral view, both guys are extremely similar as actual impact players. Elite defenders on and away from the ball that can switch onto bigger players. You will not find many more impactful players their height or shorter defending inside the paint; drawing charges, swiping the ball, going vertical. Both force a bunch of turnovers, both make quick/good decisions on both ends of the floor, both are efficient guys that don't take that many mid range shots (not that many do nowadays lol). Both are kings of plus-minus data.
The biggest diversions in the two are that Manu was a drive first player who got massive FTA's and threw all kinds of audacious passes.
I don't think Manu is the best comparison for him because of that. I was pushing Derrick White as the next Chauncey Billups back when we still had him in SA, but I believe a more accurate comparison is Kyle Lowry. If he stays healthy and confident I don't think a career like Lowry is that unlikely for Derrick. Honestly, all 4 of Billups Manu Derrick and Lowry are kind of an overlapping 4 circle ven diagram.
It hurts to not see Derrick actualizing his obvious potential in a Spurs uniform. However, I think it's obvious how much winning did for Derrick's confidence. Playing off great offensive players in Boston gave him the breathing room to build up his confidence and win through bad individual games. In SA when he struggled and we lost (and we lost more than we won) it clearly wore on his confidence. In Boston, when he struggled and Boston lost.. wait, Boston doesn't lose a lot... yeah that helps your confidence. That helps you shake off the bad games when they're forgotten in wins. I think it's obvious the losing and extra scrutiny for personally bad games wore down on him in SA. We made him deactivate his twitter after he shot like 0/8 from 3 in Milwaukee.
The November 2018 Spurs were kind of a depressing team to watch. We lost Kawhi, Manu, Danny, Tony, and Kyle. It was jarring. How was this real? Our team is Aldridge DeRozan Gay Mills? Dante Cunningham is starting for us? Weren't we watching Kawhi look like Michael Jordan carrying us through the western conference like 16 months ago? Losing all those guys in the summer was a punch in the stomach and Dejounte tearing his ACL in the preseason was the kick in the --- now the one guy I'm excited to watch is Derrick and HE's GOING TO MISS THE START OF THE SEASON!? That team was sad to watch. However, by January they were so much fun for me to watch and basically the only reason for that was Derrick. It was obvious he was a good player and that he was going to be a great player. There isn't any other young Spur I've said that about between Kawhi and Victor. The difference when Derrick was on and off the floor in terms of watchability AND productivity as a team was night and day. He was 95% of the fun of that team for me.
I wish he was blossoming nationally as a Spur. Call it entitlement. His potential was criminally underrated by fans media and apparently NBA front offices. I don't like the Celtics but Derrick has made them my 2nd favorite team and just like he made the Spurs fun to watch in 2018 - 19 he now makes a team I don't care about fun to watch.

I'm not saying White would perform better without Tatum or Brown, as he certainly takes advantage of their presence on offense and defense. If you stack a team with good players, it becomes incrementally harder to stop the offense.

@@devinberry4472 Maybe you're right, but in practice in the NBA we often see it play out differently. Starplayers that perform well in the clutch, tend to get the ball and perform well in the clutch, it's just a normal thing in the NBA. Even if only for a good story of heroics, its a good thing to have.
It also feeds on itself, if that player keeps on performing, he starts to believe in himself and actualizes this by getting extra motivated and focused in those times. Similary, a player that missed a bunch of shots, gets seen as a choker and loses this confidence.

That Cavs adjustment to move Porzingis is just similar to taking away RW3 from the ball. Stick him by the dunker spot and let him track the ball at the rim. Plus C's can switch anyway so they can always get someone on Allen if he relocates off a screen. Which then leaves Tatum defending the perimeter which is ideal. And as Ben noted it is possible because you have 4 other guys who can essentially defend 1~4 at the perimeter. Until they run into a team with a taller high volume jump shooter but most those monsters are in the WC.
I will say regarding what assets the C's moved to get White and some of the guys, its probably a product of Stevens seeing how Ainge gathered a war chest of picks years ago and didn't really use them until their value diminished. Along with Ainge's penchant of taking wings with ball handling/shooting potential in the mid/late first such as guys like Langford and Nesmith. In the end they were just sweeteners to drafts that would help assemble their complimentary talents. But they certainly lucked out finding an easy replacement to shipping out Smart by easily getting Jrue who was moved for the Lillard trade. Good aggressive moves in the FA by Stevens.

I’m right there with ya. This team is fascinating. But you’re leaving out a critical element that makes them so so different and difficult. Not many teams have a Tingus pingus. Center who’s deadly from 3 point range but can score mid range and post at the highest level. We have Al horford. 2nd in the nba in 3pt% last season. And he’s more of the same this season. Very few teams have a snipping big. No other teams have two. And here’s the kickers kicker. Al is even better from 3 % wise. Al hit an open 3 later in that Detroit game. It was the most beautiful 3 point shot I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I’ve ever been impressed with an open 3 point shot before. But Al has become a master marksmen.
This team has 2 of everything. 2 all nba franchise 2 way wings. Two combo guards who are the two best defenders in the nba from the backcourt. Two 7 footers who are deadly from 3. Can score at any level and who are excellent passers
We also have 2 shooters off the bench who can put the opposing team ice in a hurry. If the c’s can land a quality bench player, they will. If Brad thinks they need something they will have it. Cuz teams like this don’t just fall out the sky. And they’re very hungry. They have that will to win I havnt seen since that run on Taryn’s rookie season. Scary terry and the gang

The question is for me is whether Brown and Tatum play smart or make bad choices... and that's their weakness, who is going to have the ball late in the game that you trust to make the winning shot or play? Tatum is just a little less than a Joker, Giannis, Luka level...

The roaming scheme is dominating the nba paint defenses the last season or two, with KP, AD, Wemby and Chet adding on to that. If a 6'7 or under wing is guarding a 250lbs 6'10 up guy, shouldn't that guy at least get some attempts to bully him? I know that most non star bigs are specialized to be roll men, but they don't even get a chance to take advantage of any size advantage.

Derrick White has been an underrated guard ever since he joined the league, I think by now we finally see the eye-balls on him he deserves. I think he's the best two-way guard in the league, Jrue has more strength and defensive versatility, Caruso is slightly better on ball, but neither of them have the consistancy on offense and the rim protection chops.
I like both him and KP (who has also been an underrated piece) as sleeper starplayers on this team. The J's can certainly put out some volume scoring, but for clutch moments and consistancy in the playoffs, I think they have more value with the former mentioned players. KP is a very tough matchup for any team and White is such a shifty player, he always makes his presence felt doing whatever is needed to win. Also if the defense shifts towards Tatum or Brown, he absolutely takes advantage of it, which was formerly and issue with Smart being in that spot not able to do so.

    Random post:
I adore Derrick White. He is such an amazing player, defender, growing into his own version of a star role playing Steph Curry/Manu Ginobili/Alex Caruso hybrid. But whenever I hear talk about his shot blocking abilities it makes me think of John Wall. That man never got his flowers for being the best shot blocking point guard in NBA history. Here’s the data:
437 blocks total. Most ever by a Pg. Played half the games of the player at #2 all time, Jason Kidd. If you look at the top 10 list, it’s all guys who played 800-1200 games. Wall broke the record in 600. Wall averges 0.7 for his career, about the same as LeBron. Wall is tied for the most blocks in a single game ever by a Pg, with 5. Wall AVERAGED over 1.1 blocks per game for his PLAYOFF CAREER. He had 3 separate trips to the playoffs where he averaged between 1.4 and 1.2 blocks PER GAME. He averaged 2.8 STOCKS per game for his playoff career as a PoINT GUARD.
Also, not quite data, but just go look up his best blocks. This dude was stuffing Serge Ibaka at the rim, chasing down anyone and everyone. Literlaly throwing Brandon Ingram or DeMarr Derozens layups into the bleachers. It was insane. And he did it while battling bone spurs and u diagnosed tendinitis for most of the time. Heck, his overall playoff stats of 21.9 points, 9.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks PER GAME( and don’t forget an overall +/- of +83) HAVEnt ever been duplicated before. I’m sure other Celtics fans like me remember him torching us over the years, whether it was the 27-0 run he led during the playoffs on his way to tying the series 2-2, or the game winning , 23rd poont of the half series saving 3 pointer in game 6. The 40/13/3/3 never done before game 2 that his teammates managed to let slip away while IT dropped 53. The 29/12 after he had just returned from surgery in 2018. The 34/13 with a bone spur on his heel and plantar fasciitis and a weakening achillies in 2018/19. Dude was wild . And I had to bring it up as I think about how good of a shot blocker white is. He’s a different type of shot blocker than Wall. Wall was LeBron James at 6’3”. White is more like…I don’t even know…something else.

As a Bucks fan scouting our #1 competition I ended up googling Derrick White impending free agency. Not soon enough! lol.

Honestly derrick white feels like the leader this team needs. Like out of all of them, i want him on the last shot

The Spurs kinda had to move Derrick White. Dude was honestly just too good on both ends to allow them to actually tank for a top pick, and it's the same story with Dejoutne. Funny enough, the Spurs would kill to have either of them back now to pair with Wemby though. lol
