Unfortunately , I could only travel in the Taj express for the very first time in 1988 and by that time it was already WAM4 hauled. However , I have travelled in the Howrah Ahmedabad express in the 70s and early 80s which was WP hauled part of the way ( Durg to Surat ) and those days we measured the trains speed using the kilometer stones and the seconds hand of our HMT watches and yes , many a time I had seen a couple of kilometer stoned disappear in around 70 seconds with the connecting rods going forward and backward furiously. Yes the coal and dust in our eyes was an extra bonus that we loved !!
@@simplysoumen Yes .. absolutely correct. I have travelled in that too, but it had too many stoppages and didnt quite allow the WP to stretch its legs .. Strangely ( I think ) this train was diselized before the faster Ahmedabad express
Indian Rly had kicked out the WP steam locomotive engines ,which were ever green masculine engines. with good power One such engine can serve 100 years. Most engines had red star or white stars around the head light ,a good look indeed. Such engines sound , whistle etc are unique. Steam engines were glory to India. Let those engines again run in Indian rail tract.
I think the biggest issue, even bigger than power or technology, was the water needs. If we track the first introduction of diesel locos, it was in regions like Gujarat or Rajasthan, where the water supply was problematic. These locomotives drank up huge quantities of water, almost 25000 liters in just around 200 km journeys. Thus, to save the demand for clean water to use up in the steam locos, diesel locos began to be introduced.
It was the last broad guage steam engine ( a WL class ), Steam continued on meter guage until 1999 ( I think ) and the last operational steam engines were the YG class.
I had travelled in trains with steam loco WP Engines from 1960 to 1982… more particularly daily in local trains from Bhiali to attend college in Durg , the then Madhya Pradesh and now in Chattisgarh State. The steam engines have been discarded due to various reasons and these had the Majesty in look. The present day children( born in 1990s era) are not aware and even haven’t seen such locomotive engines…
We were probably from the same school since I was from Bhilai as well . For many years Durg station was where electrification from the Howrah end terminated and trains had their WAM4s replaced with WPs or WDM2s for their onward journey towards Mumbai ( Bombay those days ) or Ahmedabad . It was a common sight to see a WP silently smoking away on the siding next to platform 1 waiting to haul the next train westwards ..

Today main constraint on speed of trsins is not capacity of locomotives, it is concern for safety with respect to the conditions of the tracks and rails and coaches. Most locomotives can accelerate to 180 kph easily. To make tracks capable of taking speed of 180kph or more requires very high quality of rails, sleepers, and most importantly the packing of bed of soil and ballast and constant necessary maintenance of each mile of the tracks wrt the rails, bed earth and ballast. Quality of coaches for speed have been improved with several innovations on LHB coaches and with these current coaches and locomotives like WAP7 and WDP4D railways can easily sustain 180kph speed with maximum cruising speed of 220 kph. Next big headache for railways is the constant trespass over the tracks by public and large cattles which railways are not able to manage without political will of the government. Many places illegal settlements made close to tracks and settlers using tracks for crossing, daily chores like bath and toilet actually damage the tracks and trains cannot run in full speed. In Europe, the tracks are off limits for public even if not fenced except at designated level crossing. All stations are provided with escalators or walking slopes. Public as a rule and habit do not step on tracks. In India public consider crossing over tracks through the routes as well as at stations as a matter of right in spite of the fact all these public have witnessed public run over by trains. I'm case of any large cattle getting hit and run over by a speeding train, they damage the under carriages of trains especially the braking system, the coupling of pneumatic pipes and train gets stranded at the spot till a spare locomotive from next ststion comes for rescue.
And once while waiting for a train at a station, announcement came of indefinite delay of running of all trains in that sector. Later news came that a train which had left half hour earlier hit a large cattle on the tracks. Besides the animal getting killed, some crucial parts were damaged at the undercarriage, (looks like pneumatic brake pipes) and locomotive is stalled. Then the railway men had to bring in another locomotive from the next main station about 25 km away to haul this stranded train with disabled locomotive. A number of other trains on either direction were delayed. I reached my destination after three hours.
UK' s Mallard & USA's S1 Pennsylvania Class were considered fastest steam engines of their era . They actually hauled Cargo during Test Phase to reach their High Speed . S1 ran into controversy bcoz it was considered that American Engines were inferior to British Engines even though their have been a number of documented evidences that S1 Duplex was faster than Mallard . Americans were more enraptured by automobiles hence Passenger Trains eventually lagged behind in interest . That Top Speed of above 200km/ hr has not been broken by any steam engines . Electric Trains were convenient as Energy could be given instantly without smoke , Water & Coal requirements . That Coal vehicle could be replaced by passenger coach increasing profit.
