  • On Saturdays December 12 and 19, 2015, bookings were so heavy for the daytime Santa Special runs at the Essex Steam Train, that a second transit was added. This afforded seeing the 2 steam trains seeing the trains meeting in daylight, both in Essex and Deep River. Usually, this only happens at night, on the North Pole Express.

Very nice video. I was surprised to see the loco propelling a train with passengers on board...strictly forbidden in the U.K.

+Parsound I don't understand what you mean by "loco propelling a train...". If you're talking about the shove move into the siding, it's perfectly legal, with a qualified conductor at the rear, with a headlight, brake valve and audible signal. It has been done that way here for many decades. How else could a train enter or leave a stub end station? Think of all the trains that have the locomotive attached at one end, and moving in both directions, such as on most commuter lines, and many short to medium distance runs.

Yes I'm referring to the 'shove move' as you call it. We have 'auto trains' which have a driving trailer at the opposite end of the train to the loco but the driver actually controls the engine from there. The fireman remains on the engine to manage the fire etc. See my video 'Auto trains at the Llangollen Railway 2015''. If passengers are on board the train must be CONTROLLED BY THE DRIVER from the most forward vehicle or locomotive. To enter a 'bay' platform, as we call them, either an engine must be attached to the 'front' or the train must be empty.Again, unless auto fitted, for trains running to and fro the engine must run round so that it is always hauling when loaded. An inconvenience perhaps but that's how it has been for a century or so, probably since an accident, but I can't remember where or when. It's always interesting to have a chat about these differences. Regards Alan
