I couldn’t agree more with you. So many of the you tube channel “overlanders” spend a fortune on their trucks , over load them and make them too complex to fix on the road. Frankly those are 3 things to avoid, in overlanding and actually also in life! Thanks for bringing it all back to common sense.

I've been doing this for decades, but never knew I was overlanding. We always just called it car camping.
Dan, I have one episode idea for you. You always say that people shouldn't be afraid of travelling to distant, undeveloped countries, shouldn't be afraid of borders or thieves. But you should share with us what SCARES you the most while on the road. That would be a different subject for your videos. Best regards.
This is why I watch your videos, because not only do you know what your talking about, you prioritize the aventure and the experience. I live in Mexico and I love to travel around Baja. I haven't been doing this for to many years but I just bought a car that will give me more liberty to do those things even more and going farther, I don't need an air locker, I need to get to Alaska!
I'm preparing my summer trip from the Netherlands to Turkey and back in the summer of 2022 hopefully, it's gonna be so great. I'm gonna buy a 1995 ford transit westfalia camper (don't care that much about off roading) and spend my time exploring cities, having street food, talking to locals and such. I feel like you're videos have prepared me very well. As a student it's quite an undertaking but I'm ready for it!

I'm right now seated on shores of lake Tanganyika as I'm on my trip to cover 40 african countries, i have done 13 countries so far but my car is a simple 90s toyota ipsum minivan, 2 wheel drive, i simply removed seats to build sleeping platform. I carry water in small jerycans, i carry 3 gallons spare fuel in jerycans, i run stock street tyres 14 inches, no winch but i carry a rope for someone local to pull me if i ever get stuck. I have no camera except my smart phone camera, the van consume about 22 miles per gallon and i am on my way down to Botswana in next weeks via Zambia... and i use dirt roads and the experience is worth a million dollars. I can relate with you and your videos inspired me a lot.

Vehicle based to me means you’re not only using your vehicle to reach the destination but also living out if it, be it in a tent, camper, roof top etc.
The vehicle itself doesn’t really matter but may affect where you can get to.
Over landing isnt new, just the name is new-ish.
You are so correct on prioritizing.

Agree with the definition. Vehicle-based adventure travel. To me, vehicle doesn’t necessarily mean a 4 x 4. It might be an adventure motorcycle or even to a lesser degree general aviation airplanes (airplane camping).

This was an odd video that I feel went against the grain of your earlier content, although I do get your point. I don’t think you really need to state all this stuff, just keep doing what you do. That’s what’s built up your followers so far, your Africa video were superb. It’s natural that people ask about tyres, the roof, the winch, etc. Just answer them in the comments with good grace as you always have done... And we can’t wait to see your next trip!

"If it doesn't get you there faster, it can wait" is the best advice, by far. I just finished my build today, and waiting for borders to open. Gonna drive around the desert southwest for a couple months now while I wait.

Also most of us are weekend warriors and he lives out of his vehicle for extended periods of time. Extra weight and eccentricities doesn’t make sense for him but totally agree with his points.

Well stated. I am taking a long weekend to "adventure travel" and sleep in my Jeep with my son. While it is just a few hours away in the Okefenoke swamp. It is a new experience for us.

Great video, I found you about a year ago when I didn't realize what overlanding was, you definitely inspired me to take the backroads around Alberta and BC, the off road videos I found also inspired me to build an overland product!! But im glad I didn't outfit my 4runner, I found out over last summer that I love camping under a 24 hour time frame 🤣 Maybe that would change if we ever got about 20° but I guess I'll just carry on living vicariously through your videos.

I love this approach. I have a 2008 Titan with rust and dents.
Yes I have maxtrax, a box rack (welded it up myself), etc. it's a true working ute too though. It carries lumber, sheep, oilfield gear etc. She is mechanically sound, a farm rig, and an adventure vehicle. I overland with it one day and load it with extra tools the next day. It's not what is on board but rather outside the cab.

Thanks to you I downsized my tires from 265/70/16 to 245/75/16 on my 2019 TRD 4x4 Tacoma and the mpg gain is impressive being that each tire weighs in at 37 pds versus 44 pounds and the less contact patch is helpful. My wife and I just came off a 5300 mile road trip, camping in the back of the truck and some very fun snowy logging roads in the Tetons. It was an awesome experience but I keep on forgetting to tell people I was overlanding 😂. I totally agree with you, just the Tacoma groups alone on Facebook people are always talking about upgrading their suspension and getting bigger and wider tires. I just keep my mouth shut in those groups because if I gave them my opinion they would have a field day with me.

Yeah. It all depends what the goal is to do with the vehicle. If you want to rock crawl and go through crazy mud and snow, 30s aren't going to cut it. If you want to travel around North America, 40s are probably excessive unless your made of money. I have a 2010 Ford Ranger on a 33x12.5x15 with a torsion crank, going to swap in a different leaf pack for a couple more inches and more load capacity, front bumper and winch, RTT, aftermarket upper control arms that use a uniball, regeared with a lunchbox locker in the back, and that's about it. Done all the work myself.

Another awesome show Dan, trying to explain to lots that my vehicle is built for Overlanding NOT to be a weekend Warrior is difficult as they constantly tell me I need this gadget and that engine upgrade, they just don't get it. but as you say if thats your thing great enjoy but I'm out to discover. I have always loved driving from place to place. And I dont like planes and security and taking off your shoes. I used to love to sail from place to place and I just stayed in my boat.
I guess i am a bit lazy in that I dont want to walk around or check into a hotel over and over. I like being in the car and seeing different places. And I like seeing different places and cool roads.
So other than if I have problems my bad knee might be an issue. I like the idea of meeting new folks.
Dan, giving that you have a LOT of experience, would you say that an extra seat is a good idea for international overlanding, or just a nice thing to have but nothing to stress about.
I just binged watched your entire africa journey for the second time and in Ethiopia you were required to hire a "guide". Also, from researching I noticed that some countries (although very few) require you to have a "guide" with you for the entirety of your journey throughout the country. So that makes me wonder if having an empty seat in your vehicle just in case is a good idea.
He Dan. I have been going trough all your videos in the last weeks. I really appreciate your "less is more" approach. I see your Jeep as a wonderful compromise with its very high offroad performance while still having the ammendaties of a modern vehicle. I totally understand why you choose it, keeping in mind things like mileage and fitting in a container. I am thinking about a vehicle with more inside space for colder wheather that might not be a problem in Africa. I am collecting information about 4x4 Vans and truck campers. What would be our choice when searching for a vehcile with more interior space.

This explanation means that the time when I was driving alone in a rental car going to the Eiffel Tower just to experiment the joy of driving and exploring was overlanding? I have always considered overlanding as exploring remote places but not as exploring crowded capitals... Thanks for the vids! (Hope my english is good enough, not a native speaker )

Definitely counts to me! When I go out I go to the mountains. Not because I am an official overlander, just because I like mountains. It's about the journey you want to have, if you feel like you are having an adventure than boom you are adventure traveling. Simple as that.
I like Dan's style because he teaches us to fish, instead of showing us fish, or just throwing fish at us. It's all edible, and he preaches what he eats. Dan teaches us using his real-world field experience so we can go out there prepared, as well as, learn for ourselves. Priceless.

With every video of yours my vehicle prep for over landing gets simpler. I’m down to have water will travel.

I’m probably in the same boat as Dan. My rig is a 2WD SUV which is a sin for Overlanding, but my adventures and tasks don’t necessitate the need for 4WD at this time. I could have saved up more and got the 4WD but that meant more hours at the job and car payments versus a rig that I can just pay cash for.
Just about everything you covered was why in 2019, I leased a 2020 TRD off road Tacoma over the Gladiator JT or the JLU Wrangler, of which I took all for a test drive before hand. I know the Jeeps are easier to lift and add bigger wheels and tires. Where I live a see way more Wranglers on the road vs. Tacoma’s. Many of which have huge tires and it is questionable they are used for rock crawling. These look cool don’t get me wrong, however they are not really practical as a daily driver. Mud terrains on pavement will wear more quickly and consume a lot more fuel $$$. BFG All terrains in a 275/70/17 are all I probably need on my Taco. I am currently almost to a year in my lease and still not sure if I want to keep this truck as my base platform vehicle to build. I am very happy with it and have made minor mods but nothing too much to break my warranty........so far. I chose Toyota reliability over Fiat/Jeep lift and larger wheel modification ability. My point is, your video is pretty my why. Thank You for the information to consider in why I want an overlanding rig!!

Dan, I have read your mind so I will write your reasons before watching the video :) Let's see if I got them right. 1) I was too poor to buy a yacht and bicycles are not really my stile so I bought a Jeep 2) Since I believe working is so 20th century I only buy old and rusty 'cause it is all bout experience not the gear', right? 3) I tell my girlfriend "bigger is not better" 4) I am curious about adventure travel - but not that curious to become a backpacker 5) My motto is hitting the road is more important than reaching the destination to which my Zen master always retorts "If there was no road and the destination is inside how are you going to reach it, young Padawan?" Take care hope you are not too mad at me :)
Why we travel ?
a) An innate sense of curiosity to see how others live so we can appreciate our own home country and lives.
b) Cultural exchange - meeting the locals and sharing stories. Learning from others so we may appreciate our own existence.
c) The philosophy of wanting to interact with a new culture to foster international friendship.
Note : The view doesn't care about your mode of transport and either do the locals.

That makes me wonder, if overlanding is "Vehicle based adventure travel" does that mean that Trent Palmer counts as an overlander? 🤔 Kinda feels like an oxymoron.

Everyone overlands differently. I always keep my Tinder account highly active and date women along my way. That way I've learned so much more about all the countries I traveled with my 230GE. The ladies showed me the hidden gems, real awesome local food and amazing camping locations.

You think that if Overlanding will become a huge phenomenon then the bureaucracy around transferring vehicles through international borders will become less of a hassle?
Because right now it seems like a headache - ship your car, pay 1K for this, 500 for that, buy insurance, get local plates (hi there Egypt and Jordan!), get a Carnet de Passage (hi there Australia and India!)
BTW, I can't even drive a car so I guess I'll be able to Overland only in my next life 😢

After 1 year of modifying my old LR D2 i came to the conclusion, that it was beeing stock the best for overlanding 😂 well shit
I'm not so sure this is a unique viewpoint. I think there are quite a few folk who think likewise but they don't tend to have big UA-cam channels.
The fella that shits me the most is Andrew St Pierre White, gets his patreons to buy him a 200K vehicle and does little to no over landing. Just tarmac and the random dirt road. Complete rip off merchant in my view, and my word he loves to talk about himself and his sodding journalism background.
Maybe you just dont like your neighbors ? Kidding. Maybe you are just always looking for something new and different.
