- Part 1 - DA-62 familiarization and Flight Prep for North Atlantic Crossing.
The biggest #generalaviation Flight I’ve ever flown! Austria to Canada.
Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight...
In this multi-part series, the largest general aviation project in FlightChops history, ride along with us as we team up with the Diamond Aircraft ferry crew and act as pilot flying on delivery of a new DA-62 light twin aircraft from Vienna, Austria to the Canadian base in London, Ontario Canada.
In this episode we get familiarized with the DA-62 prior to heading to Diamond Aircraft’s factory in Austria where we meet with Martin and Micke and get some further training on the DA-42 that Micke will be flying in tandem with us back to Canada.
During our initial “big briefing” as I’m calling it. we discovered a great deal of the flight will be IMC which presents a great opportunity to further refine my #IFR flying. We relied a great deal on ForeFlight for the mission planning and as a backup throughout the journey.
I also made a point to test out over-the-ear and in-ear headsets while getting familiar with the DA-62. The Bose ProFlight in-ear headset ended up being incredibly comfortable and the noise cancelling was far superior to what I expected was possible from an in-ear set in a piston aircraft.
As the journey unfolds, we will release some awesome extended footage to Patrons between each consecutively published episode.
Keep an eye out as we release each #oceancrossing episode back to back!

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I am a huge diesel fan. Their efficiency, performance, reliability and simplicity (relative) are all great. Having them on a GA aircraft with that level of automation is just the top shelf. And knowing guys like these are involved with building your plane is also satisfying. You know it's done right.
This is my boy 😁 🛩 Looking forward to the next episode 😁 and next time I will do the sightseeing 🎶 ⛪ ☀ Greetings from Vienna ☀ Micke Mama 🤗
Greetings from Steve's Mama😅
The moms have met! Look out! :)
Those engines really look like a game changer in the workload for flying single pilot multi. Excited to learn more about the airplanes on your trip!
This is gold! already my favorite series to watch in 2022!
The green flight academy that will start here in our city just got their brand new pa28 today. That one had been ferried from America. It’s amazing when you think about it, looking forward to this series!
Awesome! I’ll have to come up and have a look at it. 👍🏻
@@MentourPilot That would be a lot of fun, so much interesting aviation things will happen here this year! You would be very welcomed.
I would have to say that Vienna Austria has to be one of my bucket list places. At least you gave us a culture flash though your purpose was the flight and prep.
Man, that is one NICE aircraft! Immediately fell in love, lol. Those engines are a work of art! Looks fast, too. Austria is GORGEOUS, too! Thanks for sharing that! You're a lucky man, Steve! Can't wait to see the cross country part. Hope you and the family had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! 👍😎
Appreciated!
Ah, Vienna! Built to be the capital of an empire - now the capital of a middle sized Central European country. It really is quite an experience. Also, Diamond airplanes are cool. Expect when they're not. I'm a member in a club that has a DV20 that mostly works and a DA40 that mostly doesn't; lastly, a piston blew through its cylinder and the crew had to land on a field. Luckily, and thanks to the skill of the pilot, nobody was hurt and the airframe didn't sustain any damage, so a new engine it is (again), and maybe next summer she'll fly again :-P
I loved these last two videos they are great. Really reminds me of when I first discovered this channel a few years ago.
Awesome..! Keep us updated and God speed..!
Wow... what an episode. The fact that it only covers pre-training, factory tour, Vienna and Austrian check out really illustrates the immensity of the experience. I bet you're glad you have as much footage as you do; I'm sure so many aspects of the experience literally and figuratively flew by. You have a rich treasure chest of archives with which to relive it all. I've never seen Vienna, but I have looked down on Salzburg from the Alps above Berchdesgaden, Germany; I'd love to see more. And the DA62; what an incredible aircraft... especially those engines! This is the first time in my life I find myself lusting to own a twin engine aircraft. So glad this trip is being presented sequentially; can't wait for the next episodes. As for my airplane, pretty much ready for first engine start, but don't want to do it until the intersection fairings are complete. It's really hard to work in an unheated hangar in Michigan right now; slowing me down a bit... but I keep inching closer.
Hey @goatflieg I've been watching your build on mykitlog and wondering when you'll do your first run! You're almost 4000 hours into your build and haven't turned the engine over yet! I thought maybe you were waiting for a refresher with Bruce Bohannon.
Keep up the good work! That air intake is a thing of beauty, but I don't think I'd have the patience for it.
@@Redchrome1 There are a lot of reasons for the high hour count, mainly due to being a first time builder. I want to make sure the first engine run is close to the airworthiness inspection and first flight. It's ready but I don't want to run it, then let it sit for months again. The Bruce Bohannon refresher will come immediately after first flight (with qualified test pilot) and then I'll take over Phase 1 flying.
What great footage of Vienna. Thanks for the great work!
Superb video Steve! Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it
Man it's been decades since I visited Vienna. Thanks for sharing your footage of it. That city is timeless it seems, looked the same as it did when I was there in the mid-90's.
Watching on my big screen - the editing on your videos is tight. That really makes this interesting and enjoyable.
This is epic Steve - can't wait for part 2. :)
Working on it now :)
what a gorgeous aircraft the DA62 is.
Very cool Steve! Feeling my GA nerves starting to twitch now. 😂
Looking forward to the series.
Thanks my friend! Let's get you up in a warbird when you're in Canada next :)
Or you visit us at Diamond😉 Du är välkommen☺️
@@FlightChops Absolutely!! That would be so awesome.
@@MickeLang That would also be AWESOME!
@@FlightChops I want to see that video!
Great job Steve. Looking foward to it!
This series is going to be AMAZING
Nice footage! I have being seen you since you had like 34k followers, incredible how you have grown as a pilot and as a film maker! Chops up!!
Awesome! Thanks for sticking around since the early days!
I do my training at the DFC. And I really wanted to see you guys when I was flying this is so wonderful!!
Looking very nice.
Yeeess!! I am so hyped for the Series!
So much information...I’ll have to watch several more times...
Looking forward to the rest of the films with your production and narration quality!
Can’t wait for the rest of this one
Me too - I guess I better get back to editing :). I feel a bit like I am hanging off the front of a train building the tracks - such a massive edit here, I haven’t been able to get much of it done in advance.
Thank you for this Steve. It takes a lot of work putting these videos together.
I take delivery of our new Diamond in 2023 and looking forward to the future episodes.
Very welcome - and congrats on your soon to be new bird!
Congrats! See you soon 😉
I always wanted to, but I may never be a pilot, however I feel like one watchings these videos. So great they way you do these. (Maybe someday, never say never, but crazy sleep disorders and flying aircraft don’t mix well for now 😆)
You can do it!💪🏼☺️
Wow, incredible story!
what an amazing adventure!
He is soooooo fast using the garmin panel whahhhhhh
Great video and very cool aircraft!
Thank you Steve, BOSE Aviation, and all the other sponsors. Happy new year to you all.
I have the Aerobask DA62 for Xplane and the modified default DA62 for Microsoft Flight Sim....this is one of my favourite planes to fly! Just like the real thing, it was super easy to fly and land! I was last in Vienna in 2000, and still has the best ice cream I have ever had!
Cool flight in a cool plane! Loved every minute!
I’m very intrigued by GA transatlantic flights, but not sure I would want to do one. 😬. Great video!
So cool. I love the DA62, a classic aircraft in a niche of its own. I learned to fly in a t-tail LSA aircraft, an Allegro 2000, but an hour was my endurance while flying because it was so light, thus so sensitive to the chop Falcon field (and other Arizona desert fields) is known for, even as early as March. Light Sport pilots rarely flew during the summer, Nov-April was what we called "flying" season.
Microsoft modeled the DA62 among its included aircraft for its recently released PC/Xbox MSFS 2020.
When I took flight lessons, my CFI, Jason Bullard, knew I had used PC simulators and said though we did not have to go thru the first lesson "instrument" drill, adults who enjoy their free time with such simulators tend to not look outside as much as they should to scan for traffic in the heavily congested area that Phoenix is.
I enjoyed this video, it is excellent, and the copilot is excellent an soft spoken (and so is the pilot and video author, of course).
I love this plane.. It's a masterpiece of beauty and engineering.
Nice film.
Very cool!
Very cool and very cool sight seeing tour guided in Vienna!
Martin and Micke are diamond legends
hahahahaha thanks😁
8:20
What they fail to mention is that those are *diesel* engines!
Diamonds are one of the only makes that use diesels!
_Quiet, efficient, easy-to-start, ignition-less, powerful diesels!_
Liquid-cooled too! Unlike most airplane piston engines which are air-cooled.
Also rather heavy engines for the volume. Which, i suspect, is why Diamonds have such a long wingspan.
I did show the Jet A label beside the fuel cap near the start of the episode :)
@@FlightChops I apologize for this comnent. I thought i deleted it. As mere seconds after i left it, someone mentioned they are diesel! 😂
I do love the diamond planes though. Especially the -62!
There's just something so charming about them.
Great video, FlightChops!
@flightchops thank you for bringing us another great aviation video. I am a student pilot currently but I'm just a few flight away from being check ride ready. I started aviation late and have been searching for away to make aviation a career in one way or another. Being a airline pilot wouldn't work for me and my family so Everytime I find videos of different paths in aviation I try and picture if it would be possible for me. I would love to hear about how you got this opportunity and how other pilots can get involved in operations similar to this. The DA62 is a beautiful aircraft and I would love to fly it one day my self wether it be for pleasure or business but unfortunately it's way out of my price range to own as amazing as that would be
There are many career paths in aviation - some are just less obvious. My opportunities are all over the map though, so maybe don’t try to emulate that if you want a stable sort of job :)
@@FlightChops lol well I can't say I want to jump all over the place like you as fun as that sounds I think what I was really trying to ask was more for this specific adventure flying for Diamond/ferrying their beautiful aircraft
Nice, subscribed.
Awesome, thank you and welcome to the channel! Over 200 back catalogue episodes now!
I see so much content about the DA-62. It must be getting a lot of interest! I hope to own one one day.
Lovely !
Excellent stuff bro
Hope all is well. Now you will be a Diamond fan boy.
Great video thanks!
@flightchops It’s a DA62…it lands itself.
I can’t disagree with that honestly :)
Cool video, Steve! I was flying the DA42 this summer at KBFI working towards my MEL. Amazing to think the plane I flew probably made an Atlantic crossing!
I can't find it on the web, but does anyone know how many DA-42's and DA-62's have been produced so far? Wikipedia only shows data up to 2010.
hehe, welcome to Europe! When was that trip? Must have been an amazing experience.
Worst trip I made was from CFB Bagotville to Schleswig Germany in a CC 130. Only netting for seets. One of the aircrew had a hammock he put in the tail😅
Revolutionary -- who ever thought of pushing a button to start the engines instead of just turning a switch? What'll they think of next?
I’m gonna assume you’ve never started a conventional aircraft engine.
Just found your channel and really enjoyed this film! I fly the Diamond a lot is MSFS. question: when doing your videos, how do you capture the audio from the planes intercom and get it into your videos? Does the intercom have an output that you plug into an audio recorder?
Thanks for the sub and welcome! It is a splitter that you can get for the intercom jack to send it to whatever recorder you want. I actually just send that audio to one of the cameras I film with.
I never quite realized just how remarkable Lindbergh’s flight truly was…..no second engine, no front window, no gps, no avionics, no communication …no “secondary” ANYthing….. if help was needed, he was a dead man…….truly a death defying feat…a thousand ways to die.
Any turboprops variants in the pipeline ?
Who knew Kevin James knew so much about flying.
I don’t want to know how much one of those costs… but I want one!!!,
Only in production as long as James Cameron's 2nd avatar
Haha - if you’re complaining about an epic production that I started publishing with in less than 6 months of shooting… my 2+ year old productions would like a word :)
nice
Thanks for being a long time subscriber - glad you enjoyed this one.
In case you feel to ease off or pee off and it's uncontrollable. What will you guys do ? Will you use pouch or land near a motel ?
Ain't no motels in the middle of the Atlantic :P.
But yes, future episodes will address how we deal with this issue.
I’d suggest flying approaches where, power control speeds and attitude controls flight path.
Isn't that the way Jarred was teaching it?
Jarred said "pitch for 95 and whatever power to make your spot."
I luv it, $1.5 Million and Micke has to fly with air leaks. Great guys...
This was the first flight of the aircraft, it was a snag that was caught and fixed before departure and ultimately delivery to the customer. It is very rare for an aircraft to roll off the production line (or amateur built process) with out some snags found during test flying - that is literally why it is a part of the process.
A dream for me
How do you control the diesel viscosity at higher altitudes and sub zero temps? Are the tanks heated?
I noticed you at FL200 with nasal cannula
Are there different rules outside of US Airspace? I assume you checked pulse oximeter.
We kept track of our blood O2 and it was always ok. I hadn’t realized about the 18,000 limit though - will look into that.
my regality is this too soon
110%
How does the DA62 keep cabin pressure with these leaks & those small plastic windows?
It’s not a pressurized aircraft.
@@FlightChops Appologies! Several websites say it is. After another google, several say it isn't too. 🙂
I wish I had the money to buy one of these.
Why does DA go fore stick as apposed to the yoke? 😅
Because Stick > Yoke 😎 🤷♂️
How do you take a piss during the flight?
You are crazy 😅
Those planes are so insanely attractive I think I want to marry one
Diamond looking for engineers?
What do you do there when one needs to pee or poo!?
I love Diamond. I love how they are at the front of aircraft engineering and safety. Super excited for this series.
just wish their twins didn't cost the same as a 5 year old turboprop...
If I could only afford this plane.
Cool video, plane, and engine. Curious that the engine instruments just show percent load and RPM. I would think you'd need manifold pressure to comply with 91.205. Am I missing something obvious, or is there a more interesting story?
Thanks Ben - I'll get someone that knows more about this than I do to reply to this one. How's your plane doing?
Hi Ben, I looked into this and found this answer from rule-making in the federal register. "If percentage power is used in place of manifold pressure, compliance to 91.205 will be accomplished with the following: The diesel engine has no manifold pressure gauge as required by 91.205, in its place, the engine instrumentation as installed is to be approved as equivalent. The type certificate data sheet (TCDS) is to be modified to show power indication will be accepted to be equivalent to manifold pressure indication."
I was feeling these engines don't really have a manual pressure because they use compression ignition and don't generate a vacuum either. Power is purely a function of fuel flow and rpm, and it's fully faded controlled burning jet a. You have a single lever to control it.
Ben - Diesel engines effectively run at full throttle, as the power/RPM is determined by fuel flow.
Yes, I heard "common rail",?????? Diesel!!!!!! I had a Jeep Liberty CRD on diesel, so hence. Wow, what an airplane!!!!! Great instructor!
brilliant....i was on the edge of my seat... your structure and editing is awesome.
So glad you enjoyed it Simon :)
The automatic run-up was impressive.
+Wow, the stick looks a lot like Battlestar Galactica!
"Bidi bidi bidi what's up, 'Buck?"
Looking at the route map you showed on the G1000, you flew literally right over my house! I live just off the HAM VOR. Amazing to think about it
It was bitter sweet to be blasting over such awesome geography and not being able to visit any of it.
Been waiting for this since i saw the crossing on micke's insta.
Great job Steve! Thanks.
Gosh I am soo hyped for this series. When I got my licence I fell in love with the DA40. Sadly it's no longer available to me (due to me moving). If I had the money, I'd buy the DA50 RG right now. It's such a good plane.
They make some great aircraft for sure. The DA62 is among my favourite for sure.
@@FlightChops that Pokeball™ paint scheme on the DA-62 prototype was really nice too. 😽👌
I've been looking forward to this video. I'm jealous you are flying my dream plane!!
The DA42 is similar in the flare it is very speed stable which allows for a longer flare without loosing lift! I have done about 50 landings in it.
I must say that I have never not greased the plane its just to easy to fly! Even in gusty crosswinds! Beautiful machine! I love that you enjoy the da62!
Yeah - it’s amazing how easy they are to fly.
That wrap-around cockpit window is a weakness of mine.
I absolutely *love* that feature, asthetic-wise!
Can't begin to imagine how pricey it is for a replacement, though
A'mazing, Chops . I've lusted after the Da62 for a couple of years now. What a bird.
Come on state lottery!!!!
WOO!!!
And as an ancient geezer, I'll gladly accept all of the computer and design assistance that I can get to "unburden my buttocks" when I'm up in them thar clouds.
Cheers for North East Florida (BTW-- high here today was 61 degrees F ... lovin' this global warming.)
That'd be an absolute blast! I've always loved the DA42, and now the 62! I'll be looking forward to each episode!
Really looking forward to seeing this trip!
3:50 it sounds like a TDI Golf with an exhaust 🤣
man, what an awesome aircraft some day when I hit the lottery it shall be mine! Should have been a doctor instead of joining the military!
Phrases I never expected to hear on this channel: "A Eitrige und a 16er Blech". Love it. And the video.
hahahahaha😉
Translation?
16:01 and the "16er blech" is referring to the beverage you would expect to go with that meal
So cool you were here in Austria. I learned to fly "next door" at LOAV, Vöslau right next to LOAN, Wiener Neustadt Ost, Diamonds headquarters and I just went hiking the other day right next to the old train bridge Micke showed you. Hope you had a good time in Austria! All the best from Vienna! Glück ab, gut land! (That's the Austrian way of saying "always the greens!")
Well done Steve. I’d say you earned your way onto the crew!
