- Part 2 - First leg of the North Atlantic crossing in the DA62 Flying over Europe.
The biggest #generalaviation flight I’ve ever flown! Austria to Canada.
Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight...
In this multi-part series, the largest general aviation project in FlightChops history, ride along with us as we team up with the Diamond Aircraft ferry crew and act as pilot flying on delivery of a new DA-62 light twin aircraft from Vienna, Austria to Diamond Aircraft’s Canadian base in London, Ontario Canada.
View part one of this series:
• Atlantic Crossing Flig...
In this second episode of the series we begin the first leg in the DA62 with Micke following behind in the DA42, flying across Northern Europe to stop for fuel in Denmark, and to don our survival suits before departing across the North Sea to Wick, Scotland. This flight leg had some good IMC as we expected, and presented several great opportunities to practice my #IFR flying while learning some of the differences between European and North American ATC. Upon arrival in Scotland, we prepare for a long flight across the North Atlantic to Reykjavik, Iceland. ForeFlight was along for the entire journey providing all our charts and flight planning tools. Their international capabilities are a must have for any pilot, let alone those flying through six countries in one day.
During my DA62 Familiarisation flight at Diamond Aircraft’s base in London, Ontario prior to departing for Austria, I tested the Bose ProFlight in-ear headset; I already knew it was comfortable, but I wanted to see how the active noise canceling held up, and it was impressive - I am not surprised it is what Micke wears exclusively when flying Diamond Twins (which are admittedly quieter than most regular piston powered aircraft).
As the journey unfolds, we will continue to release more awesome extended/raw exclusive footage to Patrons.
Keep an eye out as we release each #oceancrossing episode back to back over the coming weeks!

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

The 62 is such a beautiful plane but I love the look of the 42 as well. Great to see them flying together
Yeah shows its quite capable as well
Flightchops + Martin & Micke = Dream Team for some amazing videos!
🙌🏼👊🏼😍
As a middle of nowhere Alaska pilot, those Foreflight charts of Europe make my head want to explode!
I hear that!
“strange beds and weird power outlets” is exactly what us europeans think in north america
Very well said!!!! That was a borderline stupid coment from Flightchop.
@@isabeaoctel It's not stupid he's just illustrating that he's not familiar with the country. To anyone not from that area things are going to be strange. Same can be said about anywhere.
Wasn't it 60hz in u.s and south japan and 55hz in the rest of the world(North japan included) or something like that
@Oct Jorge that's borderline stupid to think that personally 😂 It's interesting how areas have different ways of doing the same thing is all.
I'm not a flyer but follow all things 'vehicular', not least aircraft - somehow only recently became aware of Diamond aircraft. What superb machines, truly next-generation. First setting eyes on them (the 42/62) was half-expecting them to be pressurised (wouldn't be surprised to find Diamond are working on it). Thanks for the content, absolutely engrossing.
Friendly feedback greatly appreciated!
I recently had the chance to fly a diamond. The differences between a typical cessna or piper vs diamonds and cirruses is crazy.
What a trip, good on Martin letting you sit left hand. That 42 has ridiculous cockpit view out.
Absolutely👌🏼😍
The windscreen on that plane is incredible!
Diamond needs to make a pressurized version of the DA62! Please!!
These guys have some gorgeous airplanes holy cow! Pulling that gray one out of the hangar was like seeing a mint classic Ferrari…and the interiors are just as beautiful too!
The first time I saw a DA62 in person, I had the same thought. It looked like it was built by an Italian sports car company.
Brings back memories of bringing a MU-2 back from Italy to Florida in the late 80's. Very Good
Whelp .... This is going keep me from getting things done for 23 minutes and 42 seconds .... x2 since I will probably watch it again... so cool... I watched the original diamond video when those two crossed... Great to see it again in yet longer form..
Haha - awesome :)
@@FlightChops Great stuff... Looking forward to the next one in this series... Very enjoyable.
Loving this series. Can’t wait for the next episode.
Awesome - I'm well into the edit for Ep Three :)
I’ve crossed the pond in a sailboat but never in a small aircraft. Very cool, thanks for the epic content Steve!
that's really cool!!!
man I"m loving this....there is something about trans-Alantic....cant wait for the next one....
What an exciting trip! Thanks for bringing me along!!
The best aviation content, as always! Thank you for the details of the experience. Quite an amazing adventure
Many thanks!
@@FlightChops Appreciate all the hard work you put in to do what you do AND run a film production at the same time! I "consume" all the aviation content I can these days but I'm not a pilot. It's top of my list if I can get the finances together....Congrats on finishing the RV-14 too! Looks like a whole lot of fun.
So nice to watch this as a German 😂 to see you struggling hard with what is totally normal to us. Kind of reminds me of us trying to catch up with ATC in America, even as an airline pilot.
I’m amazed at the visibility from the cockpit of the 42. It looks like you are in a giant glass bubble. I love it.
Very cool to see the two approach profiles immediately beside each other.
Yes agreed. It was a good debrief point to myself to remember I don’t need to aim for the piano keys ;P
SPECTACULAR VIDEO !! Great flying, great editing, great crew with Martin & Micke, please keep up the huge work !! 👏👏👏
Thanks Carlos!
And wow- you've been a subscriber for 7 years! Awesome.
Carlos! You have to join us with the 42 some day ;)
@@MickeLang Of course it will be a dream !! Anytime!! We should arrange an annual owners meeting or else !! Hugs!
I always forget that most planes have to be delivered. Solo is the only way I would do a long ferry passage for reasons I won’t divulge. 🙊 impressive sandwich bag.
Oh man I’m loving this series. If I ever made enough money for it, flying a DA62 across the Atlantic is one of my dreams. But for now, thank you for taking us along.
I am watching you guys flying with all the 'bells and whistles' across the Atlantic and think back to the 1940s and those volunteer men and women pilots flying warbirds from Canada and the US to England. They had the bare minimums, compass, altimeter and oxygen. What balls they had!
totally agreed!
Fantastic work guys! Cant wait for another episode! Love the team spirit, Mickes excitement for adventure and Martins calmness. Diamonds are simply lovely as always!
☺️☺️
Very kool video chops! Im enjoying the 2 plane flight work. Iv’e watched some Atlantic crossings. But your weather has been the best so far. Catch you in the next one. Around bend Oregon out !
Absolutely loving this series. Thanks for sharing!
Our pleasure!
A big thumbs up! Nothing else need be said. Thank you!
This is a really cool episode in a really cool series! Thanks for taking us along for the ride :)
Never dreamed of seeing my home Airport at the Garmin screen in one of your Videos.:) Keep up with the good content. Greetings from EDHN
Amazing, can't wait until next episode.
excellent video :) I can’t wait for the next episode !
Me neither - I'm already editing it :)
I SO admire what you have achieved. You are one of the few living the dream.
Thanks! It’s been very rewarding to share!
This is awesome. You gentlemen are living my dream. Watching this video is such therapy to me. - student pilot
you will get there👊🏼 good luck with your training!
What's for lunch? With me, it's Red Chile Potato burritos! I make tons of those for long trips! But, then, I'm from New Mexico: where lots of languages are spoken!
Another excellent segment Steve - can sense the excitement. Brilliant production. :)
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing video and gorgeous aircraft
Very nice to see the approach into Sønderborg Airport from a pilots perspective . I’ve seen it many time from the cabin of an ATR flying back from Copenhagen.
excellent flight and film....thanks Steve
Glad you enjoyed it!
Stunning journey! Thanks for taking us on the ride!
Right at the beginning of this episode, literally seeing you flying through my everyday playground airspace 😍
Am so hooked to this series.
I just became one of your Patreon supporters because of this. Again, I'm really loving the Diamond and multi-engine content!
Awesome, thank you!
I'll be sending a personal "welcome / thanks" email soon - meantime, let me know if you have any issues finding any of the exclusive content there.
The DA-62 is my dream machine...
love flying these diamonds, awesome airplanes finally get to watch your trips with these
I've been watching your vids for a while now! Super educational and enjoyable! I'm excited to finally be starting my PPL next week!
Awesome! Thank you! And congrats on starting the journey yourself!
I have been waiting for this. Yeah!
What were the dates you flew through the Czech Republic?
It was Aug 22 I think? (2021) And we really just flew overhead - I'd love to visit some time
Fixed-wing aircraft aren't generally my thing, but gosh do the Diamond aircraft look like proper pieces of kit... so efficient, so well thought-out, looks like also phenomenal visibility and probably wonderful handling... control feel must be crispy with pushrod linkages everywhere. Seems like everything you'd want out of a personal aircraft used to actually travel distances from A to B. Beautiful shapes as well: just a cool vibe.
Thank you for what you do. It's interesting to see what goes into flight planning outside of the US
Awesomeness!!
Amazing series. Thank you for giving us an insight into the ferry pilot experience. Can't wait for upcoming episodes.
Incomparable work! Looking forward to the next update.
Fascinating stuff Steve. Can't wait for the next episodes! This covers a lot of the stuff that so much of the other ferry content 'skims' over.
Great following this trip through Europe, and some “close to me” flight tracks.. Love it! 🇩🇰
I’ve enjoyed all of your content through the years, and it’s so inspiring to see you go through all these different sides of aviation, and adding it to your logbook 👌
Let me know if there is a stopover in Denmark again, I would love to show you the Danish Merlin EH 101 helicopter. I share your love for aviation, an I get my flight hours in the “backseat” as a rescue swimmer and flight mechanic.
Awesome! Thanks for your service! I definitely intend to be back and to spend time there with my family - 2020 was supposed to be the international Flight Chops year... but we all know what happened there... hopefully soon.
@@FlightChops international ? What do you mean with that ? World tour with fly ins ? ^^
Is France actually planned when doing this ? ^^
Love this series! I did my PPL in DA40NGs, Diamond sure do make lovely aircraft. I'm now flying a Piper but hopefully will get to take a flight or two in a 62 some day.. Seems like a perfect aircraft for crossing the Atlantic!
Is this the same Micke from the Austria episode on fun for Louis trip around the world? That was the first person that came to mind.
Yes it is haha😍☺️
@@MickeLang that's is too cool! Awesome to see you doing your thing in the flight industry!!
@@Fredk54Yeah I guess I am the lucky guy☺️ Thanks☺️
Great video Steve! So interesting getting your perspective on the european air space and that cockpit and airframe look like a great treat for an atlantic crossing.
Thanks David!
I think the Windshield of the DA42 makes it look and also feel much more modern than the 62. :D
Man, that looks like a nice, luxurious ride! Only slightly jealous, Steve! 😁Great stuff!👍 😎
This is sooooooo fun to follow along with
:)
A flight like this is my entire bucket list.
Loving this series! An aviation adventure 💪🏻
Thanks for the experence
What a good looking plane!
Next level 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
As my Eastern European g/f commented when driving down the Birdsville Track [Australia] that we had driven through the equivilant of 3 Euro countries. There is stations larger than some Euro contries.
Awesome! Great flight, planes and vid guys.
What a great experience for you, Chops.
Yes it was! and I'm glad to share it!
There is no more comforting voice than an Austrian dialog..
Cant wait for the next release. What a trip!
I just had my longest solo flight ever in a pa-44. It was 755nm and got my first actual time too. I hope I can take GA flights like these one day.
For a first landing in that type, that was actually very good. Not exactly what you wanted, I get that, but surely one to build on.
I once came across a pair of DA42s that landed at my hometown airport of VANP in India. I guess they were on a ferry flight too, as they started the journey from Austria and finally ended up in Thailand or Malaysia. Was just sitting in my balcony drinking some coffee and spotted these tiny birds (very unusual from the A320 and B777/787 that use the airport). FlightRadar24 gave me the rest of the details. Found it very very cool that someone was taking such a long trips in these planes.
It's so cool to see and hear everything that is so normal for me here on this channel. When you do come to Hamburg, I'll have you do the ATC Steve :D
This is an awesome series so far! More like this in the future please!
Great work. Can’t wait for the next one! 😁
Dang man, you were learning a whole lot of stuff here. I'm just gonna go put my "World's okayest pilot" shirt on and sleep in it.
I need one of those shirts!
Really nice flight. Seems fairly complicated.
This is so great! I really love your multi-engine content!
This must have been such an awesome trip! Wow!
One thing about the 42 and 62 is when you land it the plane has to be alligned with the runways de crab the plane so it is completly straight with the centreline and use aileron into the wind. Landing gear on the wind side should touch down first if you are slightly crabbed it will be felt. Your landing was good anyways.
This is a standard cross wind landing for any light aircraft though… I don’t know anything other than a big jet that wants to tolerate landing with any crab / side load.
Awesome. Thanks.
Never flown a plane, no idea why the UA-cam algorithm suggested this but it’s awesome!
Welcome aboard!
Welcome to the aviation virus😉
You don't have to be a pilot or fly an airplane to love aviation. The nice thing about Steve's channel is yes, it's geared towards pilots, but it also attracts a lot of non-pilots as well, and there is a great learning opportunity here. Even if you ended up flying nothing more than Flight Simulator (and a lot of guys who follow this channel fly only Flight Simulator), you will learn a lot and learn about flying.
You'd be surprised how deep the rabbit hole takes you. I went from watching flying videos, to doing flight sims, to actual flight lessons in about a year!
@@Orzorn If you have the pockets to afford it, it's a great thing. I couldn't afford to fly any more, for a number of reasons, but I'll tell you what, I wish I could just because it's that good!
wow thats intense! Awesome video!
Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I'm so massively jealous you got to fly in this plane. It's my dream aircraft to fly one day.
Awesome content Steve...makes my forthcoming "new to me" airplane pick up from Cooking Lake (Edmonton) AB to St. Catharines, ON seem a little pedestrian. But I'm like a 10 year old anticipating delivery of a cereal box prize!!!
Very cool! What type are you getting? And that flight won't be too pedestrian, especially not in winter.
@@FlightChops found a pristine '71 Cherokee 140! Only 4300 TT, 520 on the engine and prop. Looking at all the gear I need and starting the flight planning already!
Love to spend a little time consulting with you on this one, since you've already done essentially the same trip.
I love this airplane! It's such a stunning masterpiece. 😍
So impressive to see they know several languages AND multiple requirements: FAA vs. EU plus national airspace differences and requirements (Québécois French vs. Parisian French)...Austria is so beautiful...!
Amazing experience. Hey, and you flew over my home Hamburg too!
How good is this!!
Though you'd go through france for this trip, anyway this is pretty cool stuff I can't imagine the amount of work to prepare for a trip like this !
I flew a 152 a few times in high school but ultimately dropped out of the program, watching this makes me regret my life choices...
Very cool that Micke was able to provide some great additional footage, you must be spoiled for editing choices! 😊 I wonder if European controllers would slow down their instructions if they heard an 'English' accent?
Great video, Steve. Awesome trip. IF I had the money, IF I had my medical back, IF I had my multi- and instrument ratings, I DA42 would be sitting waiting for me.
Okay, I have a totally unrelated question for you. When I started out with a camera, my first camera as a Minolta SRT-101. From there, I upgraded to a Maxxum 7000, and from there to a Maxxum 7D. Twice, I had one stolen. From there, I went to a Sony A58 and A77. So, as you can see, I'm an A-mount kind of guy. Sony, of course, no longer makes an A mount, they have gone totally to E-mount and mirrorless cameras. Wave of the future.
So, a friend of mine has a Nikon B500 point and shoot. She took a photography class, but her camera didn't have a PASM mode, and she wanted to expand. SHe's asked for some help, so I'm helping her put all her learning into real world use with a new camera. Being a Sony kind of guy, I thought the HSC-400X would be a great camera for her, but they've stopped making it, and it didn't have RAW, so I was looking for a camera with a large aperture lens and RAW capability. I found the Lumix DSC FZ300. It has the same physical sized sensor as the Nikon Coolpix, but 12MP versus 16, but it shoots in RAW and has a constant f/2.8 lens from 4 to 108mm actual (25-600 equivalent).
I've said all of that because I've noticed you shoot with Lumix cameras, and I'd like to know which model cameras from Lumix you shoot with. What other camera would you consider shooting with as a professional videographer? How did you get started using Lumix cameras? I mean, they aren't 'household names' when it comes to cameras, at least to most anyone with a photographic history.
I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. I love the cuts between two different airplanes and two different environments. It really works well. This is good stuff!
Hey sorry for the delay replying - camera wise, I'm still shooting on a Lumix G85 that has to be pushing 5 years old now. It's still a great little camera and shoots 4k, but I am sure there are better options now, I just haven't been putting the energy into learning what is new - please let me know what you find out.
very nice man, hard work you done very well presented.
Even though the closest I've been to a Diamond DA-62 is in MSFS, they definitely are one of my favourite GA aircraft. Great styling, modern interior, panoramic canopy ... $1.08-1.24 million US doesn't seem like a bad price either.
Great series!
You have some amazing friends. This looks incredible I would love to do this type of flying.
I'm doing the same with a DA62 but in the opposite direction in MS Flight Sim. Not quite the same calibre as the real thing but it's pretty easy to relate to all the steps you are going through. Great series so far.
Can we please get a route in the description so we can re-create in MSFS?!
LOAN EKSB EGPC BIRK BGSF CYFB CYGL CYXU, you're welcome ;)
@@MickeLang cheers! i also did try and pause the video in a couple spots and squinted at the MFD map and did a recreation flight in the DA-62 in MSFS and it was fantastic fun
