Its a trick. Here in Georgia, February and March likes to make you think its getting warm for a couple weeks, you get out there all excited, planting.. then 😑 it freezes, ices, snows, etc.
I’m a longtime fan of tree form shrubs. We moved to a home where the yard was over-planted with shrubs that were simply too large for the space. I’ve been able to limb up several of them into multi-trunk tree forms. Doing so has allowed us to keep some of those mature shrubs... while others had to come out to make way for more appropriately sized new shrubs. Now I want a paniculata hydrangea, too!
Very interesting. I do hope to see continuous updates on this tree form process. I just love the other curvy tree you've shaped, could you go over that technique as well. It would add so much interest as a focal point in a garden. As always, nice work thanks for sharing. (I ordered 2 EDGEWORTHIA plants today, thanks to your video)
Another fantastic video!!!! I have a small lot so I am tree forming a lot of shrubs that grow 10-15 feet instead of buying a lot of trees since many trees get much much larger. Also I find there are more evergreen shrubs than there are evergreen trees, so by tree forming them I have more evergreen "tree" options I have been just learning as I go and this is the first video of it's kind I can find. I really appreciate this video!!! Thanks for the great content!!!! Maybe once they are less akward I will submit some pictures of my tree forms for the subscribers Sunday video.
Watching this while having my morning coffee! ☕💜 Would you be able to propagate the branches you will be cutting off in the Spring? Thanks for sharing your knowledge Jim!
Interesting you talked about the plant tape. I ran out last year when the world stopped turning. Went to Lowe’s praying they would have some Pixie Purple Lorapetalem . Nothing but I got the Plant Tone you suggested and low and behold on a clip strip at the checkout was the tape. I bought 3, that will last me 30 years.
I’m fond of tree forming shrubs, whether they flower or not. I tried a privet once, 😂🤦♀️, not recommended. My husband was not a fan so after it reached the roofline he dug it up, 10 yrs later I’m still chopping suckers.. 🥴 I will try a hydrangea now. Thanks
I live in Laurel, Ms & currently rooting gardenia cuttings from an old homeplace (~1940s). This gardenia has much larger leaves than my "August Beauty". Do you think this could be a "Mystery"? If not, any ideas what type it might be? Next question: Do you think this would make a good tree form? These cutting are in a propagation box w/grow light & sphagnum moss. No roots yet after 6wks in the box, but the leaves are lush & happy! I enjoy your videos?
I wouldn't cut the plant.. I would try brading the other branches together. I have done that to some of my plants while they're still young. They look great.
I’m not sure my husband can wait a couple of months to see how you prune those branches! 😂 Hé is worried about rot so close to the ground. How short do you cut? Do you treat the wound in any way?
I'm wondering how top heavy it will get. Will it always need to be staked or will it reach a point where the trunk is big enough to handle the weight of the blooms, wind, etc?
I have 3 types of gardenia cuttings (dwarf radicans is one, not sure what the other 2 types are, but they're not August Beauty) that have been in propagation box w/grow light for 6wks. To my amazement, one type has grown buds & looks as if its about to bloom!!! These cuttings came from a shrub I bought @ Lowes many yrs ago, but I do not remember what type I bought. Could it be the "Frostproof"? Does the frostproof bloom earlier than other types? Thanks!
Forming a bush into a tree has a limited time to do it? I have a Crape Myrtle bush that is between 3 - 4 years old that also has the “main branch” lopsided when it can be the main one to mold it to a tree… but I don't know if it's too late to do it
I’m trying that with one of mine , Hey Jim, can you “ground graft” those side limbs and make another plant ? I think you put a rock on top of it and it’s suppose to grow roots ?? Is that allowed?
I actually dipped my cuttings into a rooting hormone and they are blossoming!!! I think by the end of summer it might get roots. Super excited because i basically just cut twigs to get my main trunk and those twigs will turn into a plant itself!
This is a year later update video - ua-cam.com/video/Ai0p-AEvJEk/v-deo.html
Hydrangea standards can be expensive. What I particularly like about this video is that it makes it an option for many more people.
Oooooo!!
You have totally simplified what I thought was a crazy complicated job- YOU ARE AWESOME!!
Thank you!
You're in a T-shirt in Feb! I can't wait until we get that type of weather in NJ! 🌞👍
Keep in mind that 40 is t-shirt and shorts weather for me 😂
@@JimPutnam Ah then I don't feel so bad, it's 43 right now. Great to be able to start seeing the lawn.
The mom in me wants to bring him a jacket😂
It's 80F in the Florida panhandle today. I'm in shorts and t-shirt. It's time to put the Espoma fertilizer out.
Its a trick.

Thanks so much. I'm planning to tree form a lilac and a rose of sharron this spring. Really needed this video.
Nice that you can do that! Please keep us updated on its progress. I'm learning. Thanks!
They look stunning in a free form. I love the idea
Love this idea! I can’t wait to see how this evolves. Please share lots of updates with us!!
I did not think it was that simple! Thanks for the video 😊
I’m excited about this project! Please document every step of the process, thanks
Thank you Jim. I really enjoy your videos because you include so much information in them.
Always wanted to see this done
Great informative video and right to the point. You pack a lot of useful tips into a concise video. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Very interesting and the images you included were very helpful too. Thanks
wow ok just learned something new, never knew you could plant it angled like that. awesome, good luck can't wait to see it grow in your space!
Excellent. Simplest demonstration I've seen on this so far. Thanks ☺
Nice! I thought it was going to be some complicated grafting, but this is neat!
Excellent information as always! Thanks Jim!
This is my new favorite video. Great info that I will try on a rose bush and a holly bush. Thanks so much Jim!!
Fun, fun. I have a bush I want to do this with. Looks easy enough. Woo hoo! Thanks for always helping me with my dilemmas. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
I love tree formed plants, I think I’ll try this with my sunshine ligustrum.
Thankyou Jim I was just talking to my brother in law about doing this

So nice, I could like it twice!!!
You make it look so easy. I can’t wait to try and make my very own tree form Hydrangea.
Thank you !!
Yes, I also would love to know how to do that with an existing duranta.
Thank you, Jim! Linda
Yes! Finally an easy guide to tree form a shrub! Good job! You have a new subscriber! :D
Can you please make other videos like these , making other shrubs to tree
Great video. I hope you will follow up with video as you train it.
I really like this idea Jim and will be looking for something to try it out on 😊

Thank you for doing this video!! I will definitely be trying this in the Spring!
Very cool! Please keep up with the progress on this! Very interesting to see the whole process ❤️
I can't wait to try this. I'd love to see how you did the tree you showed us with the interesting trunk.
Such a helpful and straight forward post ! Exactly what I need !! Thanks so much !;🙌🏼🤩
Great this is good to know, thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Thank you. Super helpful. I will attempt this with a blue chiffon.
Love to see this past year pic!! :)
Groovy. I can’t wait to see the progress
Watching this while having my morning coffee! ☕💜 Would you be able to propagate the branches you will be cutting off in the Spring? Thanks for sharing your knowledge Jim!
When you trim off the top flower and use a side shoot to continue growth upward, is it because you will get more height from a side branch and why?
Can you braid the three branches together as a trunk?
Interesting you talked about the plant tape. I ran out last year when the world stopped turning. Went to Lowe’s praying they would have some Pixie Purple Lorapetalem . Nothing but I got the Plant Tone you suggested and low and behold on a clip strip at the checkout was the tape. I bought 3, that will last me 30 years.
Awesome. It does get a little brittle in time.
Beautiful
Why not try to bend the other two stems to the ground. Use a brick on each to hold them to the ground. They will root and you have more plants!
Because that’s not what he’s trying to do lol

can you train a rose like this? I know tree roses are typically grafted onto a ‘trunk’.

Hi Jim I enjoyed this video!
Those limbs that you cut off from the hydrangea, could you have placed the removed limbs in dirt to root?
Hello Jim I really like watching your videos you really explain to where I understand thanks, question though do you do small landscaping
Thanks for the info
Good info! Wonder if this is possible for Hydrangea arborescens?
Great video❣️
This should be interesting!
Would you use the same " one branch" technique for a wisteria bish...into a tree?
Loved the quick video. I usually cut back my H. paniculata each spring , zone 5b. Do you prune these when they are in tree form as well?
I wouldn't cut the plant.. I would try brading the other branches together. I have done that to some of my plants while they're still young. They look great.
Is there a followup video on this?
Is there a follow up to this video? It's been a little more than a year and I would like to see how it looks today.
I’m not sure my husband can wait a couple of months to see how you prune those branches! 😂 Hé is worried about rot so close to the ground. How short do you cut? Do you treat the wound in any way?
Wow
Im going to do this with a Chinese Snowball Bush and Camillias, Im guessing its fine to leave them a multi trunked tree?
Great video! Is it too late to form a tree when the Hydrangea paniculate is about 3 years old?
Can I do this with my new tea olive shrub?
I'm wondering how top heavy it will get. Will it always need to be staked or will it reach a point where the trunk is big enough to handle the weight of the blooms, wind, etc?

Instead of just pruning off the unwanted branches, you could always air layer some roots onto them first
Should I always start this process in spring or can it be done in fall?
Jim, can a burning bush be tree formed?
Forming a bush into a tree has a limited time to do it? I have a Crape Myrtle bush that is between 3 - 4 years old that also has the “main branch” lopsided when it can be the main one to mold it to a tree… but I don't know if it's too late to do it
I didn't realize it was that simple! I thought you'd have to get it grafted on a standard. Just curious if this would work with an own root rose?
I have a serviceberry with about 5 large stems and many other smaller ones. How many would you keep for this?
Can only the paniculata type be tree formed?
Will u trim off the dry flower on the top of the branch?
Yes, and use a new shoot to continue the main branch
how is this doing? Pls do a video when you cut this back thank you.
I’m trying that with one of mine , Hey Jim, can you “ground graft” those side limbs and make another plant ? I think you put a rock on top of it and it’s suppose to grow roots ?? Is that allowed?

How will it handle ice?
It should be fine since it will be leafless. Of course anything can get damaged with enough ice
Why not root what you intend to cut and dispose of?
Hi how long is your temporary for bamboo stakes?
When you do your pathways do you use a edging ?
Those are six foot pieces of bamboo. I don't use edging
I see you hiding the fence progress from us 😁
😍
What variety of hydrangea paniculata is it?
Unnamed variety. Literally a one of kind seedling selection
@@JimPutnam oh wow lucky you. Lol
He did give strict instructions that I couldn't make money from it
@@JimPutnam 😂
