I found a shiny Absol once in XY. I was on my very last ball, so I went “I’ll give it ooone hit to give myself better odds to catch it”. …critical hit, and my Pokémon went “It did a critical hit because it loves you!”. I was crushed.
I have another one. It's called "accidentally hitting the run button". I found a shiny Audino in Black, and was like "Why is this purple? I'll get it with a quick ball." Then I hit run instead of bag. Then I googled purple Audino and had my day ruined. And then a few years later, in Omega Ruby, random encounter shiny Audino. I choose to believe they are the same one
I found one in White, and I used a False Swipe and successfully caught it. Boy, did my heart almost leap out of my chest when I looked at it in the PC and saw that it had Double-Edge. _Phew..._
I can ABSOLUTELY relate to #1. That exact scenario hasn't happened to me, but similar things have, where you just get in the groove of resetting, and then you see what you're looking for for less than a second before BAM It's gone forever

The first shiny I ever saw was a shiny Electrode in the power plant in Leaf Green. I was confused by it being blue on the bottom instead of red so I assumed my game had glitched. I restarted my GameBoy and was happy to click on the PokeBall on the ground to find a normal Electrode with red on the bottom, thinking that I fixed the glitch. I later looked up what might've caused that and learned all about shiny Pokemon, and I kicked myself for letting that one go without even knowing how rare it was.
I saw a post where someone said their latias they found was the wrong color and asked a message board what was going on. The first response was "its a glitch, just reset your game and it will be fine" with the first person responding "That fixed it, thanks" This haunts me...
As a kid I came across a Shiny Ghastly in Pokemon HG in the bellsprout tower.. at that point you dont have pokeballs yet.. So I went to a pokemart and bought pokeballs and kept running in the same spot believing it'd show up again..

It’s not possible because his Ralts will only stay shiny if he catches it. During the battle before the Elite Four and the battle before you challenge Wattson in the Mauville City, his Kirlia/Gardevoir is not shiny anymorr.
The second type of uncatchable is a big problem in the Johto games, with two fairly long routes, which you have to cross twice, between you and Pokeballs
9:45 "You lost the concentration click the wrong button" I mean you soft reset it for 2413 times, your body would definitely remember to soft reset it the next one. its all muscle memory
@@ootfan7882 you can include looking at it before resetting part of that muscle memory by waiting an extra second. I have encountered a lot of shinies through soft resetting and I will NEVER skip one.
To be honest, this really seems like the most likely way to lose a shiny. I'm not a shiny hunter but I have done similar things in games with rng where you just soft reset until you get the numbers you want
Abra, Magikarp, and Bidoof all have a base Catch Rate Multiplier _(ranges from 3 to 255)_ so high that a turn one Quick Ball might as well be a Master Ball.

It's possible to do that but almost impossible. You really have to not pay attention and honestly be kinda stupid to do that. With that being said I've done it a couple times albeit mainly with wormhole stuff
Here's one I'm sure some people have done, even if they don't know it: not realizing a pokemon is shiny in the first place. This can happen one of two ways: 1) a new player who doesn't know about shinies at all sees one, thinks, "oh, that's odd," and kills it/runs away. 2) you glance away long enough to miss the sparkles from a shiny that looks almost identical to its base appearance. Things like Seel, Elekid, or the Regice I'm currently staring at wondering if I should go through the trouble of catching it or just try again and hope I'm not making a mistake.
So, during my casual shield play through, I found 2 random full odds shinies without actually looking for them. They were a dugtrio and galarian mr mime if you were wondering
I randomly found a shiny Sneazel and shiny Amoongus within an hour in Pokémon Scarlet, both at full odds while just making my way from the Ice gym to the Fighting Team Star hideout! Then a few minutes after catching the second shiny, the game crashed and Amoongus was gone for a moment, but luckily when I loaded the automatic backup save, it was back in my box.
I remember I was 5 and I just got Pokémon emerald. My uncle joe got me the game along with a grey GBA. My siblings got similar gifts. I remember him telling me about the Pokémon on the cover and if u ever see a black one throw the purple ball. He had also said the same thing to my sister who got sapphire. Sure enough I found the black rayquaza after really struggling in my first ever play through! I remember crying about the elite 4 and getting lost in the ocean.(I was young and didn’t save my progress a lot) Nevertheless I loved every minute of it. my first and worst shiny fail was a full odds random dugtrio that I had encountered in a new save. What’s interesting for me is when I encountered my first shiny Pokémon.( It was a shiny makuhita in the caves of dearies island in Pokémon emerald.) I of course had no idea what it was. I thought to myself “did the game glitch or something?” But i actually caught it to show my friends who introduced me to Pokémon who told me it was a shiny. So I guess I have bragging rights because I didn’t mistake it for a glitch and showed it my friends. I’m Not belittling anyone of course because I totally understand the mistake.
The two shinies at once issue can also happen in generation 4! In Eterna forest you can get double battle wild encounters, both of which can be shiny. if that wasn’t bad enough, often times the two shiny animations playing at once would cause the game to crash, losing both shinies.

Shiny fail 11: Catching a shiny Pokémon on a busted cartridge that won't hold save files anymore. I have dealt with bad cartridges, but luckily never lost a shiny to one.
One time I encountered a shiny wild abra. At first I was just amazed, but that amazement soon turned to a sheer, unrivaled magnitude of suspense when I realized it would only know teleport. I only had one move to catch a shiny, or I'd likely never see it again.. This sort of feeling is both terrifying and thrilling: the feeling you get when you have a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and your success can only be acted upon by the improbable whims of the universe. (I caught the abra, though.)
I felt that last one. I never have played a game that has shinys in it yet. But the amount of times I’ve been mindlessly clicking or doing something in a game and screwed up something I didn’t want to is insane
i've never really had this issue but i imagine a lot of people have failed shinies simply because the shiny just looks so damn similar to the normal coloring so if you don't notice the sparkle you're screwed. EDIT: a couple months after sending this comment i had my first shiny fail. fainted a shiny eevee because my dog distracted me while i was dexnav chaining and i was just mashing A so i didn't notice til it was too late. i spent weeks hunting for another one i was so angry (i did get one tho).
I actually failed a Shiny Basculin this way. I wasn’t paying attention to my game and didn’t see my screen, so...I ran from it. Afterward I went to my Pokédex and scrolled down to Basculin, and sure enough, shiny red-stripe Basculin had been registered as “seen” in my Dex. This is the ONLY shiny I’ve ever failed.
The most depressing shiny Pokémon I have ever failed is when I ran into a random shiny scyther, and managed to catch it in a quick ball, but then I closed my game and forgot to save.
In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald there is something known as Battery Glitch where when the battery on the cartridge runs out (Emerald is active by default because of a programmer error) the RNG gets fixed. This removes most of the random chance from finding a shiny. When a new game starts or the battery runs dry the shiny encounter is set to a specific frame (for this example we will say frame #10 out of 8042) that when you encounter a Pokémon on that frame the Pokémon has a 1/7 chance of being shiny. This means that, assuming 60 FPS, if you start the encounter at exactly 1/6th of a second after starting the game there is a high chance for a shiny. If you’re playing on Emerald or your cartridge says the battery is empty then finding the Poochyena means that there’s a high chance of finding a shiny if you keep resetting the exact same way. This also means that if the shiny frame is frame #540 then you have to wait 9 seconds to start the encounter or else there’s no chance of the Pokémon being shiny.

Coming in really late but agreeeeed on number 1. I lost a Pichu when I was trying to get a shiny Alolan Raichu due to being distracted and killing it by mistake. I looked over right as it was in it's death animation and that killed me hunting for shinies for a long time after that.

In Black 2, me and Bianca got into a double battle with some wild Pokémon, one of which was a shiny Grumpig. But, I had to KO the other Pokémon to be able to throw a ball, and by that time, Bianca had it at half health. I silently panicked, because support trainers are mostly programmed to attack, so I just threw Ultra Balls like a madwoman, but she fainted it. I still have the shiny sprite of Grumpig in my Black 2 Pokédex, and every time I see Grumpig, I remember that moment. But, I’m still grateful in the long run, because I’ve found a bunch of shinies throughout my life on complete accident.

#1 happened to me - I wasn't listening to audio OR shiny hunting, so I didn't notice the shiny Wooper. So I did a gen 8 Masuda/Charm combo to replace what I ran from.
One time I killed a shiny because it was the first one of that kind that I had seen, and I thought that was how they regularly look. Then, I threw a Pokeball on a normal one thinking I had caught a shiny only to find out days later that it was a normal pokemon and the first one I saw was shiny.
The first shiny I ever found was a ghastly in the haunted mansion thing in Pearl. I didn’t have enough balls to catch him, went and bought more, came back and he showed up again
Once, I found a shiny Floatzel as a child, and I knew what they were, just not how valuable they were. I found one, and chucked pokeballs until I caught it. I took about 2 steps, when another shiny Floatzel popped out. And I thought, "eh, I already have this" and killed it; my cousins, which were sitting behind me, all started screaming at me, because they knew there was a second, and were ready to go all out to get it from me. Oops :/
My first Shiny was a Kadabra. One time on the GTS, I traded it (for the same reason) for a Level 70 female Infernape. Here's the problem: I had already chosen Chimchar as my starter, and now that person has a Shiny Alakazam somewhere.

Spent two hours looking for a female Salandit on Pokémon Moon, to eventually evolve into a Salazzle for my Pokédex, I just wanted a standard one.. one shows up, yeah.. but in the company of a shiny Male! Thankfully I saw sense and captured the shiny Male, even though annoyed that I would not be able evolve it.. and then it took another hour to catch that elusive female one.. sigh..
I get so pissed off when a Pokémon uses a care critical when fainting a shiny. Here's what I mean; You DEFINITELY don't want it to faint. But when a Pokémon with max affection attacks, it makes me mad when it says, "it was so in sync with your wishes that it landed a critical hit." yeah, that was totally my wish.
Funny story on running away from a shiny, back in X and Y I was looking for the low encounter rate hydraigon by Victory road. I was doing it for a good few hours and at one point I ran into a shiny fearow however by then I was not even paying attention that I hit run but just as I did I looked back at the game and saw that it was a shiny Fearow. Needless to say after that I stopped looking for the low encounter rate Hydraigon and definitely my biggest shiny loss I ever had.
@Dion Van Rijswijk I hope you can find a shiny by completing the Dex and get the shiny charm, doing some catch combos, and using some lures to see more pokemon. These thing only applies to LET'S GO! except for the shiny charm which are availible from gen 6 onwards. You should also try if you have Black 2 and White 2 or below, soft reset a thousand time ;). BTW i haven't got a shiny charm or lure but I still get 2 shinies. And Dion Van Rijswijk, please try out masuda method if yoo are on Sw/Sh, SM, USUM, XY, ORAS, BW, B2W2, D/P/Pt, HGSS, FRLG, RBE and GSC. I hope you will get some shinies. Oh and shiny hunt in PKMN Go is just a pain so do not do it.

The other day, I encountered a Shiny Poochyena. I called a friend so he can watch me catch it, but he instead witnessed me failing it when after I switched to Manectric to paralyze it, it Roared. But that is not the worst Shiny fail I had. A year ago, I luckily found a Calm Shiny Feebas, meaning I can evolve it into a Milotic. And then a few days after trading, my save file got corrupted. But atleast I managed to get a video of the latter.

My first shiny was a Wailmer. I didn't even know what a shiny was, but I knew that it looked pretty cool with them purple colors and stars, and wanted to catch it. I had my Graveler up front. I thought, "What is the weakest attack I have?". Then I pressed Rollout. I hate myself.
A story I’ll always remember, when I was younger I thought the game lagged or was bad because I didn’t know what saving did, I was playing through my backtracking strange game and found a shiny dodou. Unlike most stories I thought it was a weird cute green glitched version and caught it. I didn’t save my game and lost my weird bird.
A few years later I used to play Pokémon at the lunch table at school and encountered a shiny golbat it always makes me smile thinking about me and all my friends around the table freaking out about my shiny golbat. I was a good 2 seconds from running away because it was too loud to hear the noise and I wasn’t paying attention till someone screamed at me that it was a shiny. it became one of my favorites and for some reason took me forever to evolve. I encountered another at that same lunch table the same year I just forgot what it was called.

I failed a shiny Whismur while training in victory road in Emerald. The thing is almost every pokemon you find there knows a move that ends the battle. The Whismur used roar and that was it.

The first shiny I ever saw was a shiny Electrode in the power plant in Leaf Green. I was confused by it being blue on the bottom instead of red so I assumed my game had glitched. I restarted my GameBoy and was happy to click on the PokeBall on the ground to find a normal Electrode with red on the bottom, thinking that I fixed the glitch.
I later looked up what might've caused that and learned all about shiny Pokemon, and I kicked myself for letting that one go without even knowing how rare it was.
Eh, it would've probably exploded anyway.

Here's one I'm sure some people have done, even if they don't know it: not realizing a pokemon is shiny in the first place. This can happen one of two ways:
1) a new player who doesn't know about shinies at all sees one, thinks, "oh, that's odd," and kills it/runs away.
2) you glance away long enough to miss the sparkles from a shiny that looks almost identical to its base appearance. Things like Seel, Elekid, or the Regice I'm currently staring at wondering if I should go through the trouble of catching it or just try again and hope I'm not making a mistake.

Sure enough I found the black rayquaza after really struggling in my first ever play through! I remember crying about the elite 4 and getting lost in the ocean.(I was young and didn’t save my progress a lot) Nevertheless I loved every minute of it. What’s interesting for me is when I encountered my first shiny Pokémon.( It was a shiny makuhita in the caves of dearies island in Pokémon emerald.) I of course had no idea what it was. I thought to myself “did the game glitch or something?” But i actually caught it to show my friends who introduced me to Pokémon who told me it was a shiny. The two shinies at once issue can also happen in generation 4! In Eterna forest you can get double battle wild encounters, both of which can be shiny. if that wasn’t bad enough, often times the two shiny animations playing at once would cause the game to crash, losing both shinies.

i've never really had this issue but i imagine a lot of people have failed shinies simply because the shiny just looks so damn similar to the normal coloring so if you don't notice the sparkle you're screwed.
EDIT: a couple months after sending this comment i had my first shiny fail. fainted a shiny eevee because my dog distracted me while i was dexnav chaining and i was just mashing A so i didn't notice til it was too late. i spent weeks hunting for another one i was so angry (i did get one tho).

I actually failed a Shiny Basculin this way. I wasn’t paying attention to my game and didn’t see my screen, so...I ran from it. Afterward I went to my Pokédex and scrolled down to Basculin, and sure enough, shiny red-stripe Basculin had been registered as “seen” in my Dex. This is the ONLY shiny I’ve ever failed.

I done that to a Raikou in Ultra Sun twice. The first was by accident the second one I got distracted
In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald there is something known as Battery Glitch where when the battery on the cartridge runs out (Emerald is active by default because of a programmer error) the RNG gets fixed. This removes most of the random chance from finding a shiny. When a new game starts or the battery runs dry the shiny encounter is set to a specific frame (for this example we will say frame #10 out of 8042) that when you encounter a Pokémon on that frame the Pokémon has a 1/7 chance of being shiny. This means that, assuming 60 FPS, if you start the encounter at exactly 1/6th of a second after starting the game there is a high chance for a shiny. If you’re playing on Emerald or your cartridge says the battery is empty then finding the Poochyena means that there’s a high chance of finding a shiny if you keep resetting the exact same way. This also means that if the shiny frame is frame #540 then you have to wait 9 seconds to start the encounter or else there’s no chance of the Pokémon being shiny.

In Black 2, me and Bianca got into a double battle with some wild Pokémon, one of which was a shiny Grumpig. But, I had to KO the other Pokémon to be able to throw a ball, and by that time, Bianca had it at half health. I silently panicked, because support trainers are mostly programmed to attack, so I just threw Ultra Balls like a madwoman, but she fainted it. I still have the shiny sprite of Grumpig in my Black 2 Pokédex, and every time I see Grumpig, I remember that moment.
But, I’m still grateful in the long run, because I’ve found a bunch of shinies throughout my life on complete accident.

#1 happened to me - I wasn't listening to audio OR shiny hunting, so I didn't notice the shiny Wooper. So I did a gen 8 Masuda/Charm combo to replace what I ran from.
One time I killed a shiny because it was the first one of that kind that I had seen, and I thought that was how they regularly look. Then, I threw a Pokeball on a normal one thinking I had caught a shiny only to find out days later that it was a normal pokemon and the first one I saw was shiny.

I found a shiny in x/y through chain fishing, then accidentally traded it to a random npc. 😭
Once, I found a shiny Floatzel as a child, and I knew what they were, just not how valuable they were. I found one, and chucked pokeballs until I caught it. I took about 2 steps, when another shiny Floatzel popped out. And I thought, "eh, I already have this" and killed it; my cousins, which were sitting behind me, all started screaming at me, because they knew there was a second, and were ready to go all out to get it from me. Oops :/

My first Shiny was a Kadabra. One time on the GTS, I traded it (for the same reason) for a Level 70 female Infernape.

Spent two hours looking for a female Salandit on Pokémon Moon, to eventually evolve into a Salazzle for my Pokédex, I just wanted a standard one.. one shows up, yeah.. but in the company of a shiny Male! Thankfully I saw sense and captured the shiny Male, even though annoyed that I would not be able evolve it.. and then it took another hour to catch that elusive female one.. sigh..
I almost failed a shiny rockruff while SOSing. THANKFULLY OH LORD JESUS, my accuracy was lowered down so much it didnt land. I WAS SO GOSH DANG HAPPY.

I get so pissed off when a Pokémon uses a care critical when fainting a shiny. Here's what I mean; You DEFINITELY don't want it to faint. But when a Pokémon with max affection attacks, it makes me mad when it says, "it was so in sync with your wishes that it landed a critical hit." yeah, that was totally my wish.

Funny story on running away from a shiny, back in X and Y I was looking for the low encounter rate hydraigon by Victory road. I was doing it for a good few hours and at one point I ran into a shiny fearow however by then I was not even paying attention that I hit run but just as I did I looked back at the game and saw that it was a shiny Fearow. Needless to say after that I stopped looking for the low encounter rate Hydraigon and definitely my biggest shiny loss I ever had.

@Dion Van Rijswijk I hope you can find a shiny by completing the Dex and get the shiny charm, doing some catch combos, and using some lures to see more pokemon. These thing only applies to LET'S GO! except for the shiny charm which are availible from gen 6 onwards. You should also try if you have Black 2 and White 2 or below, soft reset a thousand time ;). BTW i haven't got a shiny charm or lure but I still get 2 shinies. And Dion Van Rijswijk, please try out masuda method if yoo are on Sw/Sh, SM, USUM, XY, ORAS, BW, B2W2, D/P/Pt, HGSS, FRLG, RBE and GSC. I hope you will get some shinies. Oh and shiny hunt in PKMN Go is just a pain so do not do it.

The other day, I encountered a Shiny Poochyena. I called a friend so he can watch me catch it, but he instead witnessed me failing it when after I switched to Manectric to paralyze it, it Roared. But that is not the worst Shiny fail I had. A year ago, I luckily found a Calm Shiny Feebas, meaning I can evolve it into a Milotic. And then a few days after trading, my save file got corrupted. But atleast I managed to get a video of the latter.

I have a friend that wanted to evolve his Shiny Onix to Steelix in HGSS, he told me to keep it for a while to win a couple battles (he was way ahead of me), a couple of months later he moved to another city, I still have his Shiny Steelix... we were 16, I'm 21 now lol

A story I’ll always remember, when I was younger I thought the game lagged or was bad because I didn’t know what saving did, I was playing through my backtracking strange game and found a shiny dodou. Unlike most stories I thought it was a weird cute green glitched version and caught it. I didn’t save my game and lost my weird bird.
A few years later I used to play Pokémon at the lunch table at school and encountered a shiny golbat it always makes me smile thinking about me and all my friends around the table freaking out about my shiny golbat. I was a good 2 seconds from running away because it was too loud to hear the noise and I wasn’t paying attention till someone screamed at me that it was a shiny. it became one of my favorites and for some reason took me forever to evolve. I encountered another at that same lunch table the same year I just forgot what it was called.

I failed a shiny Whismur while training in victory road in Emerald. The thing is almost every pokemon you find there knows a move that ends the battle. The Whismur used roar and that was it.
