Absolutely LOVE the synopsis! We totally agree with you. While there were some limitations with time and budget, we thought they did a respectable job with the material. We did enjoy this one. We did recommend this one to our audience.
I just watched this the other day, you guys aren't late.😘 Everytime I see an Austen adaptation I realize more and more how convoluted the sub plots are. She is a great author but it seems a bit soapy if I think about it too much.😂
They should've went with Northanger Abbey or Persuasion (both of which are shorter novels)- Sense & Sensibility is one of the longest (if not the longest)! Did they think they were Emma Thompson, attempting to bring it to a movie run time?! But if Austen is pretty scandalous... Lydia running off with Wickham to Scotland (but not making it... she definitely wasn't just hanging about London cough cough), Isabelle in Northanger Abbey hooks up with Col. Tilney thinking he'll surely propose... As for this adaptation, it was pretty good! I just thought the costumes were a bit too extra considering they would've been poor. Elinor would've sold off all their fancy clothes for extra cash. I personally love the Masterpiece Theatre/BBC adaption from 2004 of S&S and would recommend that for a truly faithful version. Re: Edward's proposal to Elinor... he thought she knew because of the banns would've been read, etc. But her servant said "Mr Ferras is married" and she jumped to conclusions that it was Edward (the servant understood it was Robert but didn't convey that). Meanwhile Edward was on his way to propose to her but needed to secure employment (he didn't want to propose to her without a job prospect since he had lost his fortune to his brother). Col Brandon employs him as vicar on his estate. So he was a bit delayed getting to Elinor, and had just assumed he knew Robert was the one who'd married, not him. In the book it sort of alludes to Elinor having a panic about realizing she'd been mistaken and that Edward was still single but never straight up says either way. All the films stage it as her bursting into tears or hyperventilating.
Fantastic synopsis! Loved your review, probably my favorite one so far. I haven’t watched the movie, but have it recorded, so will watch soon. Like Daniela, I love period pieces, too. Couldn’t stop laughing when John said, “I want electricity.” Great dialogue between you - fantastic job!
Wait... all of the points in the sped-up synopsis were shown on screen? I must have watched this later at night than I usually watch HM movies. Also, when she said "Look what we've been reduced to," that's just the period way of saying "We've got THIS?!?!?" in a despondent tone of voice! :)
You’re totally right! “We got this” should have been amended for the times 😂 And no, we were going by the book timeline… that’s why we had to use House as one of the images, lol
I enjoyed your review much more than I enjoyed the movie itself. I lost track of who was who in the movie very early on, so maintaining interest and full focus was impossible for me. Maybe it would have helped if all the characters wore uniform numbers, so then I could have checked a scorecard to remind myself which guy was leaving which woman to attend to business in London. On top of that, I found most of the acting to be woeful, even by Hallmark standards. I agree that the story would be better told in a longer two-part format, but they would still need better acting than the high school drama club stuff I saw here. My rating: a hard Miss. I'd give it 3 French hens, but I think 3 English chicks would be more appropriate.
