- On Friday, April 13, 1951, Troy Powell and Ernest Walrath were executed at the Idaho State Penitentiary for the crime of murder in the 1st degree, a crime both young men confessed and plead guilty to. The execution took place outside the walls of the prison in #2 yard, away from other inmates. It serves as Idaho's only double execution to date, as well as the youngest men to be sent to the gallows in our state's history. This video explores the crime and the perspectives of a former retired Idaho supreme court justice, the daughter of Walrath and Powell's attorney, and the current historic sites administrator at the Old Idaho Penitentiary.

Fortunately executions are rare in Idaho.
Very informative presentation; well done.It's my understanding that Powell and Walrath were executed in the prison yard in the vicinity of the rose garden and not inside in the execution chamber shown in this clip.Personally I feel that Powell was equally guilty in this cowardly robbery and murder.Even though Walrath was the "mastermind" of the plan and stabbed Mr.Wilson Powell assisted and assaulted the victim with a sap.Contrary to Powell's statement, he definitely had blood on his hands from that night.Also,the victim knew Powell and didn't feel threatened by his presence with Walrath,who he didn't know.Powell betrayed the elderly grocer, plain and simple.The two criminals were solely responsible for their executions.Hopefully they were truthful and had repented and both were sincerely remorseful.A tragic and unnecessary murder in which three lives were ended.
I remember visiting this place for school and this is one of my most favorite field trips so far especially how cool the inmates stories are!
It only took 11 months to execute these two. 🤔
