- A new documentary directed by Sir Alex Ferguson’s son Jason is released this week, offering a portrait of the hard-driven, uncompromising manager responsible for the most successful period ever enjoyed by any English football club. Exclusively for GQ, actor and lifelong Manchester United fan James Nesbitt spoke to both Fergusons - father and son - to learn how a young man from Govan became the most decorated manager in his sport’s history.

As a Liverpool fan, I’ve always acknowledged the brilliance of Sir Alex. I’m Glaswegian too, and every time he speaks he carries the clarity and magnitude of intent my Grandpa did. Brilliant, tough, caring men. Man Utd were lucky to have him.

Documentary really shines a light on it. It's hard for younger people today to realize just what dire state United were in in the mid-80s. The man transformed the club top to bottom. It was incredible. His drive and work ethic were unreal.

What made him a great manager is that he acknowledged everyone at Old Trafford, from the star players to the canteen lady, he created such a tight family there and never reflected, win, win and win again.

Despite being a giant even before Ferguson's time, United always had the feel of a much smaller club. He obviously built on that ethos when he arrived. Everyone was valued and he instilled respect in his young players for the staff and the ordinary fans.
What a contrast to the ultra corporate faceless entity it has become under the Glazers since he left.
I think it was Jamie Johnson's book on United in which he stated that after SAF left, it acted as the handbrake coming off for Woodward, as in for years he'd wanted to get all the gimmicky corporate stuff out that we've come to see, but SAF was the only one stopping it

Manchester United always had a working class vibe about it. They always felt like overachievers, and they were hard working players. United also was never about one player. Their success came from the whole squad. This is why I’m a United fan.
Managed to build different teams and dominate for decades no one comes close to sir Alex 👏🏽

Am a Celtic man,i remember the stories about him going around Paisley with the loud speaker telling people when he was the St Mirren Manager to stop following the Auld Firm and follow their local team,a great man who wears his heart on his sleeve.
Same here. I used to go and watch Aberdeen when I was a student there because they were so good. When Celtic came up I had to look through my fingers.

This man's story, and the grief he got from his own fans prior to becoming the Legend that he is today makes me wonder why Manchester United fans of today are always so quick to turn on their manager, whoever it is.
I don't remember my first United game, my Uncle Ken took me to Old Trafford when I was a nipper when Busby was in the last throws of his second term. I was too young to remember it today... the second time I saw them, I was a bit older... Tommy Docherty was the gaffer... it was a 4-4 Draw at Sheffield Wednesday... in the SECOND Division when we got relegated...
Uncle Ken was expecting us to smash them...
I always liked Atkinson because of that team he built with Robbo, Macari, Mark Hughes and Norman Whiteside, and it was so frustrating that especially the year we won 10 on the bounce at the start of the season that we would never see the league title.
When Sir Alex joined I was, I admit, a bit disappointed. Nothing to do with him... but I wanted to give Atkinson a couple more years. People actually thought like that back then... in terms of "In a couple of years this team could be something special..." these days, it's about NOW!!!
And to be honest, after the first couple of years I was on the Fergie Out bandwagon, but in stepped Uncle Ken and explained to me how long it had taken Busby to win the league and more importantly WHY it had taken him so long, and since he knew more about football than any man I knew apart from my Dad, (who supported Huddersfield Town so didn't give a toss about United...) I listened. And as the years rolled by and the anger grew, I became more determined to give him time. When Leeds won that last First Division before the EPL I had even convinced a few friends that we had a chance in this new league.
Never looked back. (Well... except in ways like this...)
United will never regain the stature they had under Sir Alex Ferguson, until they put their full trust in a manager and stop bowing to public pressure to dack and replace every few years.
The United fanbase has always been split on many things, especially when it comes to managers. Personally I always give managers time. With that board to work with, I struggle to think of a tougher top job in football

@@martinnordtvedt8749 Quite right... It's made tougher these days by demands for fast turnaround success. Busby took 6 years to win a title, Fergie took 6 full seasons and the majority of another. If people are saying Ole's had 3 years, then Fergie took 7... and Fergie was getting the transfers he actually WANTED through that period...
People keep demanding we sack whoever hasn't won the league in their first 2 or 3 years and replace them with some flavour of the month or big name. But that was where United always failed to achieve success. That type of manager doesn't want to simply come in, stick to the previous managers long term goals and just "...improve the coaching".
And if they are the sort of manager who is only there to puff up their own profile, grab a title, tick a box on their CV, then go find "Another challenge" ("cough" Jose Mourinho "cough") there will never be another dynasty. Ferguson understood what Busby had done, and how he did it... mirrored it, and through providence improved on it.
@@andrewtomlinson5237 Exactly. It seems like United fans don’t understand what clubs and teams we are up against. Ole has an averege squad with a few good players here and there, and an incompetent board. He is up against Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. Both of which have better squads, and work for more ambitious clubs. And we expect someone like Pochettinho or Conte to come in and just solve everything? Good managers yes, but still not as good as Klopp or Pep. And the board will still be same regardless of the manager.
I’m not even a United fan, but u cannot tell me he isn’t the greatest football manager of all time. What he has achieved is monumental.

As someone who actually watched Aberdeen as a kid from Slovenia (ex Yugoslavia) in 1984 I am even more impressed I witnessed this incredible journey of Sir Alex. He is like The Beatles and Star wars. My childhood, teenagehood and coming of age would be totally different without him.
I watched the film, near the end I almost cried, I never cry but I realised it's because all my childhood I watched him and my team, so many good times and memories, thanks.
As a long time Liverpool fan, Sir Alex tortured us for more than two decades, and we certainly did not appreciate the success he and his team achieved. Nowadays I have to acknowledge that he truly is a legend and icon of football, and is surely the greatest manager of all time. Wish him all the very best of health for the future ahead, he deserves it!
If you think he's the greatest of all time then you're no Liverpool fan...as you don't know what Bob Paisley did in just 7 years. Ferguson was great...but no Bob Paisley.

Just to clarify something you obviously don’t know, I have supported Liverpool since May 1971 (yes FIFTY YEARS), just after they signed Kevin Keegan.
I do agree that Bob Paisley was a hugely successful manager.
However, when he took over from Bill Shankly, he inherited a team full of talent and success, and Bob certainly won a wealth of trophies in his nine year period. I truly believe though that Bill Shankly was the man who initiated everything at Anfield and in my opinion, is the main reason why Liverpool are respected around the world.
Whether you are a fanatical Liverpool supporter or not, you have to acknowledge what Sir Alex has achieved in his managerial career. He guided an Aberdeen team from virtual no hopers to a side that broke the Old Firm stranglehold in Scottish football, winning 8 trophies in Scotland and 2 in Europe.
When he took over at Man United, they were struggling, and then proceeded to win 28 major trophies with them, and rebuilt the team 3-4 times in that period, never an easy thing to do.
I don’t believe there is anyone else on the planet, that would agree with your opinion of Paisley being superior to Ferguson.
@@RG-ja34sep Ferguson won nothing in his first 6 years and the man u fans wanted him out. He had 27 years of trying to win the european cup in a period that included not having to win the league to qualify for it. Ferguson knows himself that he did not succeed in truly 'knocking LFC off their perch' as they are still 3 europen cups behind us and that kills him. Not another person on the planet eh? LOL!

A very intelligent, warm, and in-depth interview from Jimmy Nesbitt asking questions in the right way to get maximum reaction and information back. It was absorbing. It's great that Sir Alex is doing these interviews now, probably when he's the healthiest he's been since the operation. He's 80 in December and without doubt that important memory of his is still firing on all cylinders. Remarkable.....

43:00 Fergie makes the point about a hard work ethic being a talent is so true. In years gone by i always assumed hard work was for free and it was a choice but i now see it is actually a talent that one possesses in the same light as a flair or skill for something.
It is a cultivated skill which becomes habitual. One of the hardest but most rewarding skills to build. Along with learning from mistakes and moving on without dwelling and living in them.
Loved how Sir Alex sounded more and more Scottish as the interview went along. Absolute legend.

@Dw we did indeed. They are parasites and whilst you are correct about the 1 billion quid spent on players they've also withdrawn an additional 1 billion or so from the club on servicing that huge debt they saddled us with and dividends for themselves. Btw they've hardly scratched the surface of repaying that debt yet despite the payments!
The infrastructure of the stadium for example is going downhill rapidly due to neglect.

I sort of loved and hated him back in the day. Hated him because he was Utd manager and loved him because he was brilliant at his job in fairness and always wanted LFC to have a manager like him but now I actually think Klopp is a better manager than him (because of his personality really).
@@keithp6699 let's see in 10 years. You can't really compare a retired manager with a full career and a relatively new manager at the biggest stage. Right now ferguson dwarfs klopp in terms of success

Such a good film. Always found it interesting growing up as a kid/early teen how much United and SAF were hated. Obviously it was because of succes but growing up supporting a team in the lower leagues allowed me to bot have that bias.
That’s what made the late 90s early 00s so enjoyable for me not supporting a prem team. What an era of football that was. The man was just a winner. A full on winner. Can’t fault that at all.

You know the thing about sir Alex Ferguson, A lot of us united supporters had dads, but didn't have a father. He was certainly that for me, a role model who I want6ed to act like I would impress because I learned from him. That is just crazy when we stop and think about it. I am -positive he was a role model/father figure to so many, and how he influenced our lives just by watching him achieve is amazing. No wonder he gets respect from rival fans, wasn't just for what he won but for who he is.
GREAT to hear the recognition from SAF for EVERYONE at the club!!! (How many managers, past or present, of ANY team ANYWHERE, would even think to do that??)...

Genius...and his dedication to football is why his memory is so good Manchester united and football is all he knows... long to live in our memories.... Just like ole Gunnar solskjear is trying to achieve... sir Alex never won anything for United .. straight away...but ole is the only man to play more attacking scoring more goals and maybe conceding more but it's the results that count and when haaland joins his Norwegian manager...we might see OGS Final squad....weve got young squad more time to grow together and next season is United's final saloon
