- I'm on the hunt for a good directional sound 7.1 surround sound gaming headset that can replace my HyperX Cloud II headset I've been using over the years. I found a bunch and i'm going to be doing detailed unboxing and reviews of all of them.

the whoosh effects for transitions are to loud imo
I’ve heard so many conflicting reviews about this product with some saying sound quality is meh while others say it’s amazing, some say the virtual surround sound is tinny while others say it really brings out the rest of the sound, and some saying it’s uncomfortable while others saying they can wear it for hours with no problems...and this is from amateur and professional reviewers alike. But the good seems to outweigh the bads, so I went ahead and took a chance and bought these, guess I’ll find out in the next couple days who’s right. I hope it’s the positive ones because either way, coming from some cheap generic budget brand headphones off Amazon (TBI Pro), I’m excited to see the difference. Thanks for helping to cement my decision!

@@amaan512 well I bought them for competitive gaming, I need the surround. The headphones arent that bad, but the surround on the Alpha S' is hideous. Its not really that accurate and it sounds like a 5€ speaker put into a tin can. You also got the bass sliders that let you chose betwenn
1.[LOW] No bass
2.[MEDIUM] Tiny bit of bass
3.[MAX] low-medium bass, but a little bit distorted (not too bad)
7.5/10 Stereo (missing out on bass)
3/10 Surround
4/10 Price-Performance (especially because of surround)
Mic 8/10, its quite good for a headset mic
Overall: 5/10, the mic cant save the fact that these are 120€ headphones, marketet as "7.1 Surround headphones", while they are almost unbearable to listen to with the surround setting turned on. If you want the Alpha S', then you should just buy the regular Cloud Alpha instead, save some money and keep that useless and disgusting 7.1 ear-assault away.

I've done a lot of searching for headphones I would want and ultimately came to a standstill between these two exact headsets. I am very set on ordering the Alpha S headphones now. @@tezuomoo7624 also the simulated dolby 7.1 surround sound is really good quality. compared to the Arctis 5s which had 5.1, it is much better

5:00 Very similar to me, I had some plantroc headsets that snapped on me, I returned them and got a new pair. They snapped too. This was from regular use, no excess stress. The hyperx cloud 2 has served me well for close to 5 years, but a few days ago the mic broke due to a wearing out on cables, I tried to fix it by soldering, but it didn't work. So looking for a new headset, that's why I'm here.
Edit: I bought the Alpha S and they seem really nice so far.
funny it’s the exact same here, had the cloud 2s for the last 4 years but the wires connection to the 3.5mm broke so my mic didn’t work anymore so i just copped these ones can’t wait to try em

Hello. Both have good microphone noise cancelling?, I've heard that HyperX Cloud 2 microphone has very good ambient noise cancellation
For what its worth I had to switch from cherry mx blue switches to cherry mx silent because the microphone was still picking up my keyboard clicks in game.

@@Krinkle1 sure, mine is on way, the stereo Alpha is useless for most of us because it has high impedance, most motherboards won't be able to power it properly.

UPDATE: I got the Alpha S and the sound is so much better I can hear sounds in games I've been playing for 5+ years I couldn't hear before in my Cloud 2.0's. SO happy I caught this video and it guided me exactly where I needed to be!! Could never go back!!!

@@Cody-hr1xi They both come with the same 'padding' on the ears so that part is the same, the Alpha to me is just a tad bit more comfortable because they seem to fit just a tad tighter (comparing to my ollld headset which may have just been worn out, idk). Get the Alpha S, you won't regret at ALL. Sorry for late responce.

Which one do you recommend for sound quality, alpha s or arctis 5? And how to tuning eq for the alpha s? As i know hyperx didnt make the software for tuning eq and the steelseries does, im still confuse what im gonna buy. Nice review btw 👍

hey man nice thorough review, but how does the 7.1 front and back channels feel in the alpha s? does the 7.1 ss feel like dolby's object oriented sound or are they more like corsair's 'widened stereo' 7.1 bs? also i would really like to know how the back channels transition from left to right, as with the aforementioned corsair bs they have very little positional transition in the back channels so objects in the back of you just kinda cut off from right to left. Sorry for the lengthy questions, but there arent a lot of dudes reviewing virtual ss out there and i feel that you know your shit about this. subbed btw 👍
Thanks! Without being a full fledged audiofile - I'll do my best to answer your question. It's tough to say without testing the corsair's surround sound, but I will say it feels less object oriented and more like a virtual software/driver solution governing a dual channel headset. For what it is - the Alpha S really did improve Hunt: Showdown Gameplay. Based my experiences with a few of these headsets, that's that nature of the beast when you try to drive dual channel sound through a usb virtual 7.1 surround sound-card adapter.
@@SystematicHardware Thanks for the reply man, to give you an a idea, the vss im looking for would be one that would feel like a speaker is actually in the front / back of you irl, so you kinda forget you are using stereo headphones, where the corsair headset severely failed (also it has distortions). I have no experiences with dual channel drivers and frankly have no idea how it differs in sound with normal drivers. I've been using a logitech G430 and the vss sound stage is THAT immersive in terms of position in the Dolby mode, but less real in DTS mode. I would keep using the headset, but the lack of clarity and loudness and comfort on the headbands are really getting in my nerves after a couple of years now.

By dual channel I meant stereo - Both the Hyperx Alpha S and Cloud II do offer that level of immersion specifically in those two directions (front/back) from what I can tell. The USB virtual 7.1 adapter essentially translates stereo sound into a "virtual" surround sound. My take is that there are "true" 7.1 surround sound headsets (I have yet to find one, but will start looking soon) and there are "virtual" and the virtual aspect comes accross fake to me because when you remove the adapter you're just left with a 3.5mm stereo headset. However I am in the process of testing out these headsets and I think the next two videos i'm going to upload (Next vid will be soon) will really help with making your decision.
@@SystematicHardware That's sic man, i have yet to come across anyone online who thoroughly reviews vss in headaets, will be looking forward for the next video. The Razer Tiamat and ROG Centurion are true 7.1 with their multiple drivers configuration, but ive heard some bad things about their sound quality. I personally dont mind the virtual ss given my experience with the logitech g430, and I think your answers are pretty conclusive of my purchase of the cloud alpha s cus at this point you've given me information about its vss more than any review i came across to online. thanks a lot for the help man, youre cool, looking forward to the next upload 👍

i have both, and i prefer the Cloud II for the gaming, the sound is more accurate and clean, but for the music, i prefer the S. On CS:GO, i can not hear good the steps with the S, dk why
because the Cloud II has a boost on the high frequencies, it makes the footsteps easier to hear.

Hello, good review but it is still not very clear to me, having a difference of 30-40 dollars (speaking prices from Argentina) you see it relevant to go for the Alpha S if I would use them only to play on the PS4 and the notebook but to listen to music when studying (I know that for sound it is better to go for sound marks but I am looking for more comfort).
Comfort and use case are subjective to the individual and your points are valid. Purchase what you think is best for you. For me - both headsets are very comfortable.
Hey. I have an Xbox one X and I'm thinking on buying the Alpha S. But unfortunately Xbox doesn't support the 7.1 sound system. I normally use this type of headphones for gaming and I would need to connect it directly to my Xbox controller. But what happens if I want to mute my microphone? I see the mute option is only available in the sound card with the USB connection.

Hey man I agree with you. I don't think you'd be able to use the usb virtual sound card adapter that has the mute button. Other two channel headsets like Sennhiser Game One/Zero disable the mic when you rotate the mic up and might be a better choice, but they aren't surround sound.
I'm curious about how different is the alpha S towards the original alpha.
The Alpha Non S doesn't have Virtual 7.1 surround sound.

No they have better sound because of the bass sliders and there is now extra ear cushions and a 7.1 surround sound dongle
For the record the virtual surround makes zero difference (I have the Alpha S) all it does is ruin sound quality.
I would recommend using your motherboard audio (if it has good audio) or just buy a sound card/DAC.

i replaced my hyperx cloud 2 with alpha s ,and the alpha s(after using cloud 2 for 4 years) i dont know why, but the alpha s sound feels like its more far away and not clear it just sounds very flat, unlike the cloud 2, i dont know why but i tested them side by side , i dont know what to do .

Being a cloud 2 user for almost 4 years now. Just wanted to know if it's worth moving to Alpha S. One of the problems I had with Cloud 2 is the bass, its really low and I had to install a software equalizer to fix it. The second issue is the comfort for long hours play, I could play for 5 hours straight with the Cloud 2 and dont feel any pain or any pressure on my ears or head. So what is your opinion on those 2 ?
Bass is roughly the same. As for comfort they have some slight differences, but they are both VERY comfortable.

Honestly one of the best review videos I have seen on this headset. Im thinking about buying the alpha s. I already have the alpha, but the ear pieces r peeling, and the aux port for the headset mic is loose and i constantly get static. My only issue is i mainly play on xbox, and the alpha s doesnt have the inline cable for controlling volume/mute. Do u think i could just use the cable from the alpha, since it seems it would be compatible, plug it into the s and the volume/mute controls would work? I would hate to just keep opening the dashboard to adjust the volume every time.
Thanks! I don't have any consoles but from the research i've done, the only issue is primarily the usb 7.1 adapter with unsupported consoles. If you take that out of the equation you're left without surround sound. That being said you're better off not spending extra for it. If I were you i'd research if the game(s) you are playing even support 7.1 surround sound. If they don't just invest in a good pair of two channel audio headset as they can still be very good when it comes to directional sound.

@@breealexander5766 well if you play PC also, you could used the 7.1 adapter for that, then disconnect the USB adapter and just use the 3.5mm jack for the console.

Hey im just wondering if its possible with the alpha s to plug the 3.5mm jack directly into my pc's motherboard or do i need a splitter cable to split the 3.5mm cable into a mic cable and a audio cable?
I got the alpha s and i was very disappointed, i wanted an upgrade from my thermaltake level 10m and i didnt notice any major difference at the sound section, maybe the hyprex have a little more bass but i just wanted more, which headset with a great quality and a noticeable bass do you recommande?

Would you recommend the Dongle sound card for playing r6 on ps4? Its the one thing im having trouble choosing headsets between. Sound is pretty mixed on rainbow as they're always switching it up but, I don't wanna have to pay extra for a sound card if im not gonna use it.

Awsome! Welcome to the channel :) If my memory serves me right, the Alpha S is compatible with the PS4 and the Cloud II is compatible with the Xbox. The compatibility is right on their website for each headset, but as for weather or not virtual 7.1 surround sound will work for those consoles, is something I don't know because I only use PC. You'd like to think that because it states compatibility that all functions of that headset will work, but then again the game in question has to also be optimized for surround sound as well.

I disagree, the 7.1 is harder for you to know where is the noise coming from and it feels more like sounds is coming from 360 flat even if the enemy is on the right side you can't tell.
and the sound quality is plain where the bass is weak as hell and the high and lows in music as been equal out on all which makes music feels plain and boring.

How do these compare to the normal alpba bass wise, i need the one packin the most bass
I previously bought the HyperX Cloud II and i returned it. Good sound though, the cloud II has also a 7.1 surround, but the mic was a nightmare and it drove almost insane to get a decent sound out of it. Used tweaking software, not capabele to be adjustment in Windows, needed to update the dongle, nothing worked. Almost want to throw it out of the window. Good for headphone yes, but a nightmare for recording voice. It don't even bother me for buying the Alpha or Alpha S one. I'm using a Logic Pro Gaming headset now, that one is a bit heavier, but it comes with tweaking software for the mic. And again, i'm not bragging for not buying the Alpha S, it is not my headset unfortunately.

Don't see why not. All you'd have to do is switch default audio out in windows back and forth.

Only difference is the bass slider, so it might sound better due to more bass (most people like bass).
However the sound card 7.1 is terrible, don't use it! Just run normal mode.

Guys please help, i had cloud2 for few years, super nice headset but i broke, then i bought DT770 pro and i got so big headaches/migranes from them as they are pressing to my jaw bone or something, do you think Alpha S is as comfortable as cloud2 or any futher experience you guys have with it?
They are both very comfortable. The Alpha S has more of a firm foam (Not too firm) over the Cloud 2. This allows your ears to not feel the back of the ear cup like you do over the Cloud II. I doubt you'll have any comfort issues with either of these headsets, but fortunately enough, since everyone is made differently there are return policies. Good luck!
Awesome systematically evaluating the quality by using his more than capable certified sound quality expert ears .. cmon dude, you must know there are ways to determine which one is best by using real tests.
Using only your ears and the specifications from the label is why people let bad products get a free pass. I do think the HyperX headsets are some of the bests, for gamers, if not the best but there aspects where they falter.
Definitely a must buy for long term gamers :)

@@pinda9421 it's pretty great, it feels sturdy, the earcups are comfortable and the sound quality is just as good I'd not better than the cloud 2. I'd recommend it.
