HELP !!!! Can someone point me in the right direction in resolving my 98 4Runner issue? When I engage 4H it goes in silent but when it goes back to 2H (disengage) there is a loud bang (like a sled hammer bang). The is a delay for about 30 second to disengage as I drive down the road below 25mph. The 4wd light indicator goes on when I press the button and it goes off when I depress the button, the light never blinks. My other 4Runner does a loud click only. I don't know the history on the car but I have changed all the oil already.

My 01 had flashing lights but 4wd was stuck engaged; I could tell because the tires were chirping and binding when I turned. I tried off-roading the suspension hoping to bump the actuator to disengage through vibration. Nothing. I disconnected the negative battery as suggested and after reconnecting, drove it a few feet back and forth. The system properly engaged and disengaged. No more blinking lights! Thanks

@@eBayFindmehere so if you put it back into 4wd it will stay the same or did they fix that issue too?

Also the transfer case has 4 of those switches. 2 up top and 2 below back. Got 2 service(detach clip remove with 27mm) those with maf spray or replace. Can check the continuity when out while pressing in the top(ball). Then while there pull black cover off transfer case actuator and you probably see a pretty corroded maze of contacts(traces?) GTA clean that up maf/light sand maybe sodder some new material and resend 400# ish grit then dialectic grease. Pull out(by hand) and clean up the gear that's left behind the now removed black cover.its basically same thing for from diff add actuator butcan pull that deal out and bench test it with battery power see if fork moves. Tight fit. I saw a video where reinstall goes back upside down and backwards to get back up to it's home. Sometimes the dc/contact have to be fixed(soddered material) per that video out there. Search here or yota tech/Tacoma world.

Toyota part #84222-12010 4runner 4wd indicator switch. Dorman 600-554. I imagine you have it already but for anyone else here's a couple part numbers to work with. Don't forget a 27mm or 1 1/16" socket. The cheapest I've found to date is NAPA Pt# NS6421 at under $35 north of 49th currency. Good luck.

Dude get a grip. There is an actuator on the transfer case that controls the 4x. The actuator on the front diff is the front diff lock and has nothing to do with engaging 4 wheel drive. It only locks the axles so both front wheels turn instead if one. Think about it. how would the switch up front control the transfer case. Transfer case not engaged , no 4 wheel drive.

That sensor only detects the front diff actuators function. When the collar slides to lock or unlock the front diff. That sensor is also interchangeable with a reverse switch. Pretty sure that is also the same sensor that he would have to change on the transfer case.
