    I was on the road when this too happened on my same 4 Runner. A You Tuber said to turn the key in the on position and tap lightly on the sensor.
    I heard it click...problem solved. I will do what you did with the cleaner, when I get back to my shop.
    Thanks for sharing.....

    Good job. Just completed getting my son's 02 4Runner out of full time 4WD. Was the sensor switch closest to the transfer case as well. We had the front differential locked and pulled the ADD Actuator to clean, inspect and re-grease. Changed the differential oil as well. As soon as my son connected the battery I felt the ADD Actuator running (maybe a self test). When he turned the ignition key to on it ran some more. When we started it and went for a test drive it re-engaged the front differential. Dash lights still flashing. Brought it back and tested the sensor switch on the vehicle and got a open load. Removed it and tested and it tested good. Re-installed, reconnected wiring and as soon as I turned the ignition on I heard a clunk and it was out of 4WD (dash lights off). Probably should change the transfer case oil as well. Thanks again.

    Great info in this video. The rear sensor / switch on the top of the actuator of my 2001 4runner was faulty. This info was invaluable thanks for making this.

    Thank you very much for the video. I would donate to this video. Mine was not just stuck in 4wd but the center diff was locked making the truck hard to turn.
    I was attempting to remove the solenoid but it felt like it was under pressure so I left it. I removed the outer switch so i could get better access to the inner switch.
    I read some paid $100-$200 for the switch. I also read that beck arnley reverse switch part#201-1788 can work. I bought the switch from amazon for $15. I installed the switch today and start the truck. I heard a clack and the light came off the dash. I didnt even had to drive it for the lights to stop flashing.
    This is such a simple and cheap fix.

    My 01 had flashing lights but 4wd was stuck engaged; I could tell because the tires were chirping and binding when I turned. I tried off-roading the suspension hoping to bump the actuator to disengage through vibration. Nothing. I disconnected the negative battery as suggested and after reconnecting, drove it a few feet back and forth. The system properly engaged and disengaged. No more blinking lights! Thanks

    you are my hero, I had checked the two switches and sure enough....one was bad. was not able to save it but ordered a new one from Toyota and that fixed the blinking lights for me.

    You can also give your rear actuator a few love taps. That's what ended up fixing it for me. The four-wheel drive had not been used in a long time

      Thanks for your comment.
      I rarely use 4 WD and the other day I pushed the 4WD button by mistake... 4 WD light stuck on.
      Did what you suggested.
      Lightly tapped the two switches.
      BINGO LIGHT WENT OUT !!
      Many thanks!!!

    Had a similar issue with a Sequoia. It would take a long time to change in and out of 4x4. Did a diff oil change front and back and it worked great after that. Now I have a 02 4Runner where the light does not even come on. Going to check the fuse first.

    I am having issues with my 1996 Hilux Surf. I get no response when I push the 4x4 button. I changed out the button/knob. I changed the sensor/solenoid you showed in the video. Still nothing. I have not tried the fuse yet.
    I left the button on and one morning I started up the engine and the 4x4 light was blinking and beeping. I tried putting it in drive and then reverse hoping it would engage but it did not. I turned off the button and it stopped but the but did not work once again after.

    HELP !!!! Can someone point me in the right direction in resolving my 98 4Runner issue? When I engage 4H it goes in silent but when it goes back to 2H (disengage) there is a loud bang (like a sled hammer bang). The is a delay for about 30 second to disengage as I drive down the road below 25mph. The 4wd light indicator goes on when I press the button and it goes off when I depress the button, the light never blinks. My other 4Runner does a loud click only. I don't know the history on the car but I have changed all the oil already.

    All the new trucks /w the push-button drive mode select BS makes me nervous for this exact reason. Why the hell do I have to lose my 4WD for a freaking switch?
    On another note, I saw the other day the manual actually recommends driving around in 4WD for ~10 miles / month to keep everything lubricated.

    My 4wd light doesn't pop up on the dash when I put it in 4wd. Also, whenever I press the button for the rear diff lock, the light on the dash flashes. Is this most likely a solenoid problem?

    • @SpeedysGarage
      @SpeedysGarage  6 років тому +1

      That sounds different, typically solenoid issues result in flashing 4WD lights. Check fuses, switches, and connections.

    Hey what’s up brotha I’ve been trouble shooting this for a while now I had one bad sensor in the transfer case and when I switched it it was still blinking like crazy so when I tried to jump the actuator on the transfer case it only moved one time now it won’t jump in or out of 4wd so I’m guessing I need a new actuator now ?

  • @gregmead4907

    Does it need to beep or just show a reading ? Some of my switches jump from 800-300-78 they just keep switching numbers erratically does that mean the sensor is bad or good ? It doesn’t beep at all

    Yup the top 2 switches are a PAIN to remove. I did the easy two, then the top two and that didn't fix it either, so it ended up being the front actuator.

    Hello Mr Speedy. My 04 4Runner is stuck in 4 wheel high. I can’t find this darn sensor to save my life. Did you access it from the driver side or passenger side, and is it like up towards the front diff or more towards the center of the vehicle? Thank you in advance

    Hello, I have a question and I am asking for an answer if it is possible. I have 4R 2001 and as I wrote I have a same problem. I did checked these switches. My question is: Is your "CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SWITCH" working only as a button, or is it working as a switch (you can clearly see the position On and Off, or hear some clicking sound during switching? In my car works as a button and I wonder whether it's normal or it may be blocked and that's the problem.
    Thanks in advance to Mike

    Hi Speedy's Garage, I'm writing to you because I see that you know what you're talking about. I have 4R 2001. There is a problem with 4 WD blinking lights. From the moment the engine is turned on, the lights blink and you can not switch to 4WD. At 110 km / h the beeper turns on and then when I press the button, the lights stop blinking. After stopping and switching off the ignition and starting again the case starts again. I just checked and cleaned the contact cleaner spray, two of the switches you showed. They look like they're ok. What's the next step and what direction should we go in, what track? Thanks in advance, Mike

    • @SpeedysGarage
      @SpeedysGarage  6 років тому

      Hmmm, it "sounds" like it might be one of the 4WD solenoids, I'd clean/check all of those as well as the 4WD switch on the shifter for starters.
