I think there's a possibility that's maybe been overlooked: These are mainly for training. In the kinds of units that are likely to be wearing these, they're firing thousands and thousands of rounds per training cycle in enclosed indoor spaces. At those kinds of numbers and at that kind of exposure frequency, inhalation of lead particulate and other byproducts of firing weapons indoors starts to have measurable impacts on health (Laidlaw et al., 2017. "Lead exposure at firing ranges-a review").
man, i remember when i worked as an EMT during the very start of covid and my company was making everyone wear P100 masks to every single call. our patients didn't understand a damn word we said, you weren't kidding about there being a gap in the market for respirator microphones lol
@@whiteskyflyer we weren't using SOTR, we were using regular industrial P100 masks. But yeah we all knew they weren't intended for medical usage, it's just something our company was making us use, probably because N95 masks were impossible to come by at the time.

British CTSFO operatives are sometimes seen using Stealth P3 half-face masks during training exercises or raids involving explosive breaches, they're quite cheap but still offer a high-level of protection, while also being less cumbersome compared to most respirators, so it may be another option. No comms though, afaik.
One reason that I've heard that some people wear them is during training to filter out harmful chemicals from shooting, especially at high round counts and suppressed
I've seen so many people who don't even know what their gas mask can filter, like just using those pink particle filters when spray painting stuff. This is the first video I watched that actually mentions the color code, bravo.
It's similar to how health insurance works. If there's a max price that someone is willing to pay for something, then you set it at the max price. Medications are set at the max prices, after doing a bunch of analytics and math, that most insurance will cover it. Insurance company X, after doing a bunch of analytics and math, will cover life saving medicine A for $299, but not $300. If you sell it for $300, you will not move enough units because not enough insurance will cover it so the price hike actually loses you money. If you set it for $298, then you're just leaving money on the table. Life saving medicine is then sold at $299.
Funny enough, I had my GTA Online character wear a gasmask as part of her full combat kit just because I like using the gas grenades in missions (especially if you need to pick up a mission-critical item that could be destroyed by explosives). I do that a lot in GTA, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, and multiple Roblox games. Although, GTA is the only one where the gas is really.. a thing. I try to roleplay as an SCP unit in practically any game it works in, so the gas mask is an essential for the look.

I remember working with a unit that was doing heavy CQB and required resporators for the first time. After hearing their explanation, its dumb not to have something if you're doing stuff like this as a profession. Its not always about the bad guy throwing stuff thats harmful to breathe, breaching charges and a lot of other devices throw out a ton of particulates that suck to breathe in after 3 or 4 days of doing it constantly.

This is an awesome video. More of these would be great to see! I will say, the FM50 is the general military gas mask, whereas there is an FM53 and FM54 that are more suited for special operations forces, so much as being developed in collaboration with USSOCOM. I saw that in an SCP game and though it was a cool mask; didn't realize it was a real thing. Also, I really did not expect you to go full Ready or Not at the end with the OST and quote. There are more civil teams like researchers, and more military teams like the Facility Response Unit and Biohazard Containment Unit. There is also a unique enemy force which seems to be multiple different military units from different countries. I don't know the lore well, so I won't start explaining it much.
Hey, I’ve came across your videos within the last 3 months and I gotta say my only complaint is that I didn’t find your channel sooner! Keep up the awesome work man sent 7$ your way. :)
I have a SOTR knockoff I bought from aliexpress for like 35$ and it actually seals pretty well. If I replaced the seal I am 70% confident it would be just as effective as the real thing. It even has the mic inside. I've used it for airsoft for like 5 months now and so far it held up pretty good
I don't necessarily recommend this. But you can 3D print 3M filter plugs for one side. I've done this with my 3D printer and it works great. So you can still have one side of your face free while breathing through the other with the 3M filter. And you can actually get quite a few different filter types. I get organic vapors filters from work. And they were great for a lot of stuff. And you can get n95 pre-filters for those
To your point about the microphone and moisture: The mic setup/mask itself looks very similar to the MBU-20/P mask used by aircrew. I’ve flown and sweat a bunch for hundreds of hours with no issue as far as the microphone is concerned.
Man I remember when Garand Thumb made his video on lead poisoning and using respirators a few years ago, a couple days ago I saw a video on a really immersive Belgian SOR training exercise to practice hybrid trench warfare and noticed that almost everybody had half faces on (looked like 3Ms too lol) It's interesting to see how prevalent respiratory PPE is becoming, at least in SOF training
We wear gasmasks with mics in them all the time (aviation) and they don't shit out. Just thought id put that out there, the mic having issues due to "humidity and sweat" wouldn't really be an issue at all.
I have experience using a respirator with p100 filters and disposable p100 masks. Both are great against non-voc particulates, moderate against pepper spray, and acceptable for very short exposure to cs and oc gas. You can get aftermarket covers for the respirator to close off one side so it's not too cumbersome with a rifle and the diaphram works OK with radio. Not great but I haven't found an alternative other than making a custom rig. A set of sealed goggles helps to make short work of most threats too. (Had problems with OC leakage)
Another win for the SOTR over a standard gas mask is portability. Remember the gas mask is only useful if you have it with you, and it demands quite a lot of real estate on your kit or of course in the dreaded thigh bag where it decides to become an active hindrance to maneuverability. A SOTR fits in a cargo pocket. As you said sometimes a gas mask is overkill and if you don't need the protection it offers then you save a lot of kit space with a SOTR.
mic works fine on flight helmet after hours of sweat. If it gets really hot, sweat will make it seem like it's faulty but you just put your lips on it and blow it out.
3M earplugs have all been up to quality assurance requirements and have been providing proper ear protection this whole time. Them getting sued is just one of those weird ideas that caught on and a bunch of people jumped in, but it has no basis in reality.
Have fun wearing that when its hot. They fill up with sweat and water super quick I have to wear them at work and I constantly have to dump it out and clean it it's gross. Personally I wouldn't wear if I was in a combat situation, I'd rather be able to breathe and have less weight/restrictions on my face. I could see it for training but even still it seems kinda silly, especially at that price point.
One plus I see the tacticool version has over the standard 3M respirator is the less intrusive filter design that's less likely to hinder your ability to get a proper cheek weld on your weapon.
Why not use a throat mic with a respirator? It would fit under a neck ballistic protection collar and wouldn't require feeding wires through a removable face mask... and the tangle that would precipitate. Throat mic would work better with a loud hailer, which if they wanted to - could be of the LRAD variety on a chest rig (smaller ones are about the size of a chest plate).
I think 3M is missing out by not creating a line of re-usable half face respirators that can be modified to use a voice amp. It is also worth noting that the M50 only requires one cartridge to operate while having two extends how long the mask can be used before needing new cartridges.
Alright so, basically, what I'm hearing then is a SOTR to a gas mask is like a bump helmet to a ballistic helmet. One does everything the other can do but the other is kind of only really worth it to someone with a proper mission to fill and works for an organization that has the money to spend for it.
Easy fix imo, get your own set up for coms, use a MOD MIC they are a separate mic for VR headsets but there nothing stopping you from finding a way to snake it through and sealing it a different way, like rubber cement.
I would LOVE to help you find information about this. I'm eager to learn more about it, and I've already found some sources that may be useful. It's not particularly hard to find, but I would love to be of any help
A lot of people disagree but facts are facts: the reason an upholstery shop will fail and a dental upholstery business won't is because the chairs are $10,000 dollars MSRP at
Well, the answer was what I expected being that it covering mouth and nose only means it's only for smoke, dust and other crap that starts flying when stuff explodes. As to if it's worth the cost, I guess you could try buying one and start seeing how much abuse it can take and if it holds up better than normal ones. Because it "working" isn't enough for soldiers, it need to survive being hit on walls or floor if something goes wrong and the operator falls or stumbles. It needs to be ergonomic, not obstructing you. SWAT and armed forces don't really care about an extra 150$, that's nothing to their budgets, not worth cheaping out on something you'll have to breathe through for possibly hours during combat.
The SOTR is probably the worst design Ops Core could come up with. The exhaust ports don't open evenly when you are breathing out (its extremely annoying), the mic is directly into your lips, and the filters are P100 but don't block smell like a normal respirator filter would. Since they sell this to the gov't, they wanna hike up the price to an astronomically stupid cost (AMPS are cool, but not $1000 cool. SOTR's construction alone felt like $100 max imo). Going the civilian respirator route with better filters for a cheaper price is the way. Including comms into a civilian respiratory takes some trial and error, but its definitely possible, better quality, and more comfortable than the SOTR.
Not to shill but the Mira safety TAPR is also a half mask but instead it accepts any sort of 40mm NATO filters. It also costs a little more than the SOTR
SIXTY SIXTY MORE TACTICAL GEAR BREAKDOWN YIPPEE TACTICOOL SLOP YIPPEE on a side note this was a cool video, def do more man, ever since that IFAK video you did I want more!!!!
if your going to go for a p100 mask, id suggest the miller lpr-100 or a similar welding mask, they have a similar foot print to the sotor and can be had for around $30
The reason they wear respirators is because of lead poisoning from excessive shooting. SOF operators are unfortunately getting lead poisoning due to how much they're doing weapons training. It's actually a pretty major problem within the special operations community. These guys are going through a case of ammo per day, thats a lot of lead over time and it does not leave your body unless you're ready to do chelation therapy.
I guess this could be useful if you're trying to work in a sandy environment? That feels like where most of the airborne particles could be a problem. That, or drywall I guess. Not terribly useful for the price. Good point about the microphone though. Affordable VPUs are hard to come by.
I actually have a p100 respirator for painting and other nefarious activities..... It works nice but it is a little uncomfortable. also it does get pretty sweaty and hot inside it.
As I see most of them using them while training with suppressors and live ammo. Is it possible that they use it so they don't inhale the gases and lead particales pushed back through the gun into the face?
The fact that US special operations has been working closely with the germans, and there are a lot of cybergoth girls in germany, had nothing to do with the implementation of this piece of equipment.🤣

A lot of people disagree but facts are facts: the reason an upholstery shop will fail and a dental upholstery business won't is because the chairs are $10,000 dollars MSRP at

There is the rattle can method if you don't want or need pink!

The fetishization of end user military hardware.
This shit is why I’m not paying taxes this year.
they use the mask for good reason if you ever hung out with soldiers they have a tendency to let one rip at any moment and laugh afterwards
It's a shame we are being shamed for saying "Just as good" when there really are alternatives that are just as good, like in this case
I use that for painting

on a side note this was a cool video, def do more man, ever since that IFAK video you did I want more!!!!
We were issued 3M masks instead of SOTRs as LEO. You had to yell for comms haha.
During covid we ran 3m p100 all the time, was alright but was less confy then the n95. (Ps i was a paramedic in a metropolitan region in canada)
Waiter! Waiter! More videos like this pleaseee!
a lot of folks wear similar masks at indoor ranges because of lead levels.
if your going to go for a p100 mask, id suggest the miller lpr-100 or a similar welding mask, they have a similar foot print to the sotor and can be had for around $30
Its a COVID prevention respirator.
I guess this could be useful if you're trying to work in a sandy environment? That feels like where most of the airborne particles could be a problem. That, or drywall I guess. Not terribly useful for the price. Good point about the microphone though. Affordable VPUs are hard to come by.
Great video
I love SOTR!!
Somebody needs to buy one and then put the file on printables.
I actually have a p100 respirator for painting and other nefarious activities..... It works nice but it is a little uncomfortable. also it does get pretty sweaty and hot inside it.
The ali express versions of the SOTR are literally the exact same (including the filter), $250 vs $30...
The VHS filter for clips with OCP uniforms makes me sad :(
Or you can use regular respirator and for coms can buy laryngophone a.k.a throat mirophone
Asbestos is one of the easiest things to filter.
Back in my day, we used a bandana. In other news the msa millennium wins again.
