I drove a lot of these Plymouth, Dodges etc. at the company I worked . They bought these cars for their fleet, and many had well over 100k miles before they were traded. They were serviced regularly and performed very well.
I used to have a '73 Dodge Polara 4-door ex-CHP car... I set it up with an H-frame trailer hitch and an external transmission cooler... That car was one of the best trailer pulling vehicles that I ever had... It was built at about the same time these Plymouths rolled off the production lines... My '73 Polara went over 275k. When I finally sold it in 1998... Of those miles , I put over 160k on the car and the engine block was the original (440) un-restored unit.... I'm sure the 318 and 360 would have done well pulling trailers too... Great cars!!!! BTW, this commercial looks like it was shot in California, somewhere in the Coachella Valley, like the outskirts of Palm Springs and surrounding areas..... The mountains there look very familiar...

When you needed a car to take on a long trip the Impala and Ford just were so much more comfortable.. when you go there your ears weren't ringing and your body wasn't buzzing they way it did in the Plymouth. When we got Mercury Montego's in 1974 it was like driving a caddy on a trip compared to any of these.. except for the 120 hp 302 that couldn't get the Montego out of it's own way. One one trip on a dirt road I had to turn off the AC to have enough power to go uphill over some small rocks. Talk about underpowered...
Ford and Chevy always sold a higher proportion of LTDs and Caprices than Plymouth ever could sell Fury VIPs or Gran Sedan/Coupe models. Their prospects probably got upsold to a Chrysler Newport.
I bought a 1 year old 1973 Fury 3 4 door identical to the one shown. First 50,000 miles great car superior ride and very roomy. Fell apart after that transmission and other mechanical problems. Large blister developed where vinyl top met metal and severe rust.
Ford offered power mini vent windows in '73 and '74 on Galaxie 500 and LTD. Power sunroof was offered on all LTD 2 and 4 door models except the wagons. .
Plymouth needed those bumperguards to comply with the new 1973 bumper standard (5 mph front, 2,5 mph rear). That´s why they´re standard. It was the easiest and cheapest way. Chevy and Ford front bumpers protrude because they´re mounted on shocks, a far superior system.
I like how Chrysler's marketing dept compared its Fury III (top of the line for Fury) to a base version of the Impala and Galaxie, claiming everything was extra on the other cars. Had they compared a Caprice and an LTD, both would have had many more standard features than the Plymouth.
This was filmed near Palm Springs CA, at Desert Hot Springs, mission lake's Country club was brand new in 1973 , it's about 12 miles north of Palm Springs but the country club sits about 1200 feet elevation. Of the 3 cars I would have taken the Chevy, it's the best looking
That’s probably why I don’t see them as much at old car shows, unless it’s a Charger, Barracuda or challenger or something It’s a shame, because I think some of their cats from the 50s and 60s were beautiful, like their Chrysler 300s and even the first gen Valiant.
@@richardthefox3412 It seems like most full-size Dodge and Plymouth sedans that get saved end up as police replicas. There's a fair share of Dart-Valiant sedans and big Chryslers that are one-elderly-owner garage kept cars.
nlpnt A lot of Fury III’s were sold but generally the sales figures were lower than Fords and Chevys. Fewer Plymouths to start with and even fewer now.

Anyone had a bad time in snow? I owned this model, loved it, want another, but, it could not stop at all in any snow, bad handling. Great in dry weather, very fast, powerful, sporty, comfy... miss it...
It was common to carry weight in the trunk back in the day for traction. The one winter I had a RWD car (an '80 Corolla) I filled a bunch of empty 2-liter soda bottles with water and let them freeze back there. When they thawed out in spring I returned them for deposit.
With excellent tires I never had any winter problems in my 73 Gran Coupe or my 69 Le Baron. I discovered the value of top line Michelin tires way back when and it made a huge difference
All 3 of these vehicles are huge by today's standards - You have to buy a truck to get a vehicle this large today - Plymouth did indeed have some advantages not available on the other two cars - It's a shame that Chrysler Corporation's quality and reliability had sunk to very poor standards by 1973. ( Not that GM and Ford weren't also challenged in this regard - but they were not yet as bad as Chrysler.) People today would probably be appalled at how poor the fuel economy was on these cars. It's too bad that the American car makers didn't wake up and improve their vehicles to keep their share of the automotive market...
Ford went all-in on quiet and a soft ride in this era, to the full detriment of handling if you bought the standard suspension. Look at old Popular Mechanics/Science (both archived on Google Books) and contemporary tests recommended the towing suspension across the board whether you intended to tow or not.
@@nlpnt My Mom had a 73 LTD with the tow package, it was about the same as my Uncles galaxy 500 police car in ride quality but they both handled terribly. My Uncle had a 72 Plymouth Fury III 4 door sedan as a daily pov and preferred it to his police cruiser. It was noisier inside than the LTD but man it handled like a sports car compared to it. It only had the 318 2bbl but it got 15mpg
Mid 70s Ford had some of the ugliest vehicle lineups ever. I liked the Galaxies/LTD's from 1968-1972, but once they complied with the 5 mph bumpers, they were just hideous. Like the automotive equivalent of the rock star years after they let themselves go.
Electronic ignition was miles ahead... plymouth loses on windshield area to Chevrolet until the 74s came out ( Plymouth basically photocopy Buick LeSabre in 1974)
I had a 73 Fury III 4 door hardtop identical to the one in this ad. Beautiful car, great smooth ride & handling. Held together well the first 50,000 miles then fell completely apart. Early rust and Large blister formed under vinyl top. Traded it at 70,000 miles with transmission slipping badly. Piece of junk.
@@172-e5s true . Average owner with no garage . Living in cold climates using it as a daily driver found that out pretty soon . The more chrome the more options the sooner they become junk .

@@gtpcruiser02 I live on Vancouver Island and believe me, there are LOTS of them, especially Dodge trucks. As a life-long certified autobody repair tech I see them every day. Dodge steel is super hard and brittle...too much carbon content, so they are very prone to rust.
All 3 of these vehicles are huge by today's standards - You have to buy a truck to get a vehicle this large today - Plymouth did indeed have some advantages not available on the other two cars - It's a shame that Chrysler Corporation's quality and reliability had sunk to very poor standards by 1973. ( Not that GM and Ford weren't also challenged in this regard - but they were not yet as bad as Chrysler.) People today would probably be appalled at how poor the fuel economy was on these cars. It's too bad that the American car makers didn't wake up and improve their vehicles to keep their share of the automotive market...
American car makers still have the WORST CAFE standards compared to Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai/KIA, VW and the rest. Why? Because all the "Big 3" make nothing but 4WD gas guzzling SUV's and pickup trucks. Years ago, if you daily drove a pickup truck...it was because you actually hauled things with it. Today, the highways are clogged with braindead people who have to out macho each other with their oversized bloated look alike boxes with the front styling of a window air conditioner grille. No thanks.

At 4:00 you can see the part of the grille molding attached to the hood is misaligned with the side pieces.

I'll take the Galaxie thank you. The Plymouth is uni-body and the Galaxie has the superior coil spring suspension.
