My tip: remember the stage of life you're in, and give yourself some grace. I read 231 books this year, but I'm retired and my kids are grown. I'm sure I didn't even read 30 books a year when I was busy changing diapers and working. Enjoy where you are, read when you're able, and don't worry if you don't have enough time to read...your circumstances will inevitably change.
You are a gifted reviewer and I wish you were my neighbor! I can’t find the review I just watched about Helene Banff (84 Charing Cross Road) that was so excellent that I hit the subscribe and bell post haste! I’m going to binge watch your reviews because each review is like reading a chapter about you! Thank you for being so thorough and personable and loving for your subscribers.😘
Great advice even for those of us that have been reading a bit. Sometimes a little reminder helps to keep you focused. For me one tip is not to compare the amount of books I have read against someone else. They may be reading quick reads while I am reading deep dives. No two people are alike and what works for me won't work for others and vise versa. So my goal for this year is to read what I desire to read and enjoy the journey.
Amen to what you said about having balance in your life. I read 237 books in 2021, which is far too many. I'm looking to cut that in half for 2022 and spend more time on other pursuits. I like what you said about doing something special each time you finish a book. We passionate readers tend to forget that a book is a blessing and we should celebrate each one we have enjoyed.
1. FUN fashion choice (champagne shirt) for your NEW YEARS day video posting! 2. GOOD choice for a first post for the new year. 3. Lots of great advice, sharing ... I am feeling inspired now! 4. I especially appreciate the last advice on "celebrating" when one finishes a book and the suggested examples. Thank you! HAPPY NEW YEAR to you, Olive.
Audiobooks are a good option for when you're doing something that doesn't require much active thought. Throw on an audiobook while cleaning or working or driving. If you already listen to podcasts, it's the same thing. I read a lot anyway, but once I let myself give audiobooks a shot, my numbers went way up.
This right here. I can listen to a book while running errands, cooking, doing laundry, and some more mundane work stuff. I doubled my books read from 2020 to 2021 with audiobooks.
You are wonderful! This is very helpful information. You are absolutely right, we need to make more time! Organizing our time is the way. ⭐️ Happy reading
My problem isn't reading more (I read over 200 books last year) but actually remembering what I read. I remember the main points, but I wish I could remember more details about the books I read. I'm trying to write about them in 2022 to see if it helps.
I have the same trouble. I just decided that It can be a blessing! You can reread wonderful books and still have a little bit of newness in your enjoyment!🤪
Glad it’s not just me! 🤦♀️ I have a Kindle and I need to highlight more and then review my highlights before I go to the next chapter perhaps. 🤷♀️ I read Bill Bryson a Short History of Nearly Everything. Sooo dense. Don’t ask me anything on that book! I’m hoping that the more I read the better I will get at comprehension. 🤞
When I can’t figure out what to read, I check what Olive has been reading because she finds interesting books that I hadn’t thought of. I never would have considered Mansfield park without olive’s urging and that book was fantastic.
I loved this video! I am trying two new things this year for my reading life: scheduling my reading time like an appointment every day (3 pm) and making a ritual of something warm to drink and my cozy blanket in a corner chair. I can only go there at that time so I look forward to it all morning (motivating me to get my stuff done)! 😉 Happy New Year!
Great tips. When I find myself scrolling social media too long I now make it a point to pick up a book instead. Since starting this habit about six months ago I have read a small stack of books that I very much enjoyed and learned from including one that took more focus due to the science behind the subject matter.
audio books are great but the mind drifts. I listen to a lot of audio but I try to always have the book in print (e-book or print) at the same time. If you miss something, love a sentence or want to read at night I can switch back and forth. It helps me stay engaged and look up anything that I find confusing. Libraries are a great way to do this especially if all you are reading is not just the latest as there is less waiting for a book one is anxious to read.
I suggest finding a favorite genre like sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, mystery. You can find books from your favorite hobby such as travel, cooking, photography, knitting. When you find a favorite genre you can find an author that you like or look up an author your interested in. If you like a certain movie/series you can read the book from the movie/series you like. I started reading romance because of Nora Roberts and that’s what got me into reading more romance.
Thank you for your thoughtful video! I found 2021 to be a bit disappointing, reading wise, for me. I think we all need to "spice" things up, shake things up, when it comes to reading. Cheers in the new year!!
Happy 2022, Olive! The advice in this video is excellent. I agree with everything you say here and I have experienced so much of this in my own reading life. Love your makeup today too!
i have a long commute to work and listen to audiobooks, it make the drive enjoyable and I'm able to "read" a lot more books that way. I check them out for free through my public library.
UA-cam definitely takes away time I could use to read instead. I'm about to tackle "The Hobbit " and "The Lord Of The Rings" books, and am very excited! I also plan on watching the movies as well!!! I plan on reading "A Tale Of Two Cities" and "Jane Erye" too. I've grown up loving to read, but as technology became more a part of my life, the less I read. Time to change that in 2022!!!!!! P.S. old books based on TV shows from the 60s-80s are good too! There's tons of "Star Trek" books 9ut there based on all the books. If you prefer "Star Wars" there's also many options!!
Good choice of books! Tolkien's a genius ^_^ LOTR and The Hobbit are some of my all time favourite books. The characters and the world of Middle Earth are so beautifully captivating. Jane Eyre's one of my favourites too 👍
This year I am trying to read my shelves. I chose 6 books I have wanted to read for a while but haven’t. I asked who wanted to read them and planned 6 book club parties on my 2022 calendar. I love parties and the accountability. So I am glad to get those off my TBR. I also had my hubby make a huge spreadsheet to cross off my own shelves. I love crossing things off a list.
I love the idea of creating a thematic environment…that sounds like it would be fun and make for an even deeper enjoyment of my reading time. I’m currently reading “Entangled Life” and I’m thinking it’s time to order more mushroom coffee!
Love the ambient sounds idea! I usually listen to a gentle classical youtube channel turned down low, but I am going to try and find an Asian ambient channel while I finish up reading "Death by Dumpling" by Vivien Chien! :)
One of the best free times I had for reading was to read during the commute to and from the school (or the offic)e. I ALWAYS read a book on the bus to and from school. And no I dont get car sick while reading,. Possibly because I have been reading in a car since I was 4 years old. I can drive but I am not a big fan of driving - especially in the larger cities. I always preferred public transport.
Obligatory lame joke: #1 Tip: Shut off UA-cam! That aside, my problem has always been feeling guilty for reading. I know that sounds crazy. But it's true. My parents never "got" reading. I love my parents and don't blame them. Both of them worked factory or other difficult jobs. They worked so hard and just saw it as a waste of time. My mother was home when we were younger, but at some point she went back to work at a factory. I remember she'd come home, wash hands/change her clothes and go straight to making dinner. She wouldn't even sit down until the food was on the table. Same with my father. He'd get home from the factory, take a shower and do whatever else needed to be done. You can see how, for people like that, sitting down to read a book seemed like a waste of time. A luxury. The things you absorb in childhood affect you forever. Even at 53, I still struggle with it. I've tried reading only after I've done everything in the house that I can possibly think to do. I still feel guilty. The only time I don't is when I'm stuck somewhere like on a train or at the laundromat waiting for machines. There's literally nothing else to do. But you can only ride the train/be at the laundromat for so long! Of course, I don't expect you to solve this. It's just one of those weird things people have to somehow sort out for themselves. I just hope I'm not the only one on the planet with this bizarre problem.
I agree and relate to the same problem. Although we know reading is not a waste of time, when I have other things to be done , my anxious mind never lets me have that peaceful calm to get focused on what I read . Sometimes I complete pages without absorbing. I need to add though this was not the thing when I used to read in my college days and it was fun as I remember.
I often get a lot of comments about how people wish they had as much time as I have to read, sometimes even in a snobbish way. I usually reply that I make the time and that I’m pretty sure it took me less time to read Game of Thrones than it did for them to watch that god awful television show. Spoiler: there are no secret coffee cups in the books

great point. ty for sharing!
so true!

Good advice. People find Time and Money for what is important to them. You have to want to read more than you want other things. Well Done.

"Start where you are" damn that really knocked me. So simple, but I'll definitely be carrying this as an affirmation from now on
I love your enthusiastic energy about reading! I feel the same way! Way to go reading queen 👑

I make brief notes about the chapters as I read. Those notes help me when it comes to writing a review.
I have that issue to, I read them and u less it was a life changing book- give me a couple weeks and I can't remember them.
Read slower. Take the time to fully engage, immerse yourself in the books atmosphere.

Your champagne shirt! ❤️
Thank you for this video. Your practical advice was wonderful and such a good reminder for me. Thanks again!

I think that reading novellas and short stories are a great way to work on increasing your reading stamina.

I love the audible originals for the classics! I never thought I would read so many classics:)
Happy New Year!!! Lovely video as always. You are wonderful and my favorite!! LOVE your shirt!

Excellent video, Olive. I would suggest NPR’s Books We Love as a resource. And yes to going to your local library and chatting up a librarian.
Just wanted to point out that your audio quality is excellent. Saw this video with earphones and it was so pleasant to listen to it!
Thank you for your thoughtful video! I found 2021 to be a bit disappointing, reading wise, for me. I think we all need to "spice" things up, shake things up, when it comes to reading. Cheers in the new year!!
THANK YOU FOR THAT WEBSITE!!! I had been trying to figure out how to find new books, and you have helped me immensely!
Happy 2022, Olive! The advice in this video is excellent. I agree with everything you say here and I have experienced so much of this in my own reading life. Love your makeup today too!

Great ideas. I read over 100 books when I was in first grade. I have always loved to read. Blessings.

Why you are not uploading more videos on your own channel??
Awww these are amazing tips! Thank you

Oh this is in my TBR pile! I am looking forward to it.
Awesome advice!

Thank you so much for this great introduction to making reading a habit. You were recommended to me by booktuber Britta Bohler.
I’m a long time subscriber and I’ve been struggling with this for a while. Thanks for this one. I have to admit I miss those “drunk” book reviews. 🤣
Goodreads has great lists if you're looking for new authors to stan. I like to find an author that way and then binge their entire backlist.

Super helpful tips here 👍
I reward myself with chocolate just for being alive, lol! 😄
Happy New Year. You look lovely
Keep in mind when you set a goal that some seasons of your life there is more time for reading. Be flexible.

Great video. Thanks. You have beautiful eyes.
I love my classics but those kinds of lists tend to be really boring. Even if it's not all classics the new ones aren't that appealing to me either.
Cute top
