  • Doing some maintenance on our concrete countertops, earthen floors, exterior wood door and windowsills. Also a look at the home and it's passive solar design performance.
    We finished building our DIY off-grid passive solar design home in November of 2022. This was a DIY build, we are not professional builders, just sharing our experience living and building off the grid in the Arizona desert.

    Good to see an update on your hard work. The carved lizard is a nice touch opposite the cast lizard. The floor repair is wonderful. Thx!

    Fantastic and thorough update! What an incredible sense of satisfaction it must bring to enjoy the results of all that effort sustaining itself a year in. Seems like pretty manageable maintenance and upkeep. Especially when you consider the amount of use keeping a home together with grandchildren running around and having fun! What a pleasure to have you share a window into this beautiful corner of the southwest. All the best!

      Thanks so much! Yes, it's such a comfortable house to live in! The design has worked out well, and it is a great place to gather with family. Now that we have more time, we are really enjoying hiking and exploring the area. 😊🧡🏜️

    Y'all are such an inspiration to us! Thank you for these types of follow-up stories. We're in the process of getting land for an off-grid retreat and events center here in Central Arkansas. It's been incredible to be a fly on your wall as we dream of our next steps. Blessings-Jeff

      Yes, the even temperatures are so nice! After 4 days without sun it starts getting a bit chilly, but temperatures typically are in the high 60°s and low 70°s all winter. 🌞🏜️ Appreciate it, thanks for watching! ❤️

    I think your concrete kitchen countertop looks awesome. Very natural and organic pattern (or anti pattern?). It should age well too. It’s a really nice feature.

    A mini split air conditioner can both cool and heat, will only take as much hydro as a small fridge and are pretty quiet.

    It is time for you guys to start watching permaculture videos. Just because you live in the desert doesn't mean you can't have a lush jungle around you, without irrigation.

    • @RedandAprilOff-Grid
      @RedandAprilOff-Grid  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes, berms and swales can do a lot to keep the water on the land and green the desert. Permaculture is awesome, but it won't turn a high desert like ours into a jungle. We made a pond, and already have a good sized berm along one side of the property, but there's definitely more we want to do. 🌱🏜️

      Permaculture fans think AZ can turn into a rain forest. Changes take decades & must be constantly re-enforced with human intervention. It takes a great deal of area to make a small plot green.

    Regarding the chair casters wearing on the floor: have you considered changing out the casters with rollerblade-style ones? I just learned about these and a set of 5 can be had from The Big Online Store for about $20. They're softer and they roll better and with a lot less noise on our hardwood floor. I don't know if they would scuff less but it might be worth a shot.

    Great update! Wondering if April is still gardening and if you would consider an update on that front. I'd love to know what has been working and what hasn't. I'm still working on learning to garden just outside Tucson and I'm finding it very challenging!

      Thanks! We have several gardening videos, this is the last one, ua-cam.com/video/y-5POnI-81A/v-deo.html . I'm trying to get a headstart on everything this year and have already started digging holes where I plan to plant things, and filling them with topsoil from under the big mesquite trees. The top soil is what has seemed to help the most. I am also planning to add some shade cloth. There's always lots of challenges! Hope it goes better for you this year! 🌱🌞

      Hi Joe! It's doing great! We have to be sparing with our usage when we have multiple cloudy days, but fortunately that doesn't happen here too often. 🌞🏜️

    I wonder if adding some type of binder in the earthen floor mix would help reduce surface cracking? Maybe horse hair or hemp fibres?

    • @RedandAprilOff-Grid
      @RedandAprilOff-Grid  4 місяці тому

      Yes, some people add straw to the top coat. We added more sand to our son's floor, and at first it didn't crack at all. Now it has two cracks that go the width of the room. I think the material shrinks some and there's probably not much that will keep that from happening. As is done with concrete, control joints could be added. We don't mind letting it crack wherever it wants to and filling it in later.
