Beautiful space! Love the shower. One caution about leaves....leaves are where ticks like to hang out and have their babies. Lyme disease carrying ticks can now be found in all 50 states. I avoid getting too close to leaves, so sitting next to a bucket of them and having to handle processing them, feels unecessarily high risk to me. I was a super healthy vibrant person who got lyme disease from a tick bite in a yard and ended up bedridden and in a wheelchair at 33 from it. I highly recommend looking into alternatives to leaves. My friend has a worm composting flush toilet in her off grid set up for over 5 years and they are super cool and break down waste quicker than any alternative. They are also super low matience. You can also use ash from fireplaces.
Hey there. I really appreciate the comment and can hear the concern through the computer. Unfortunately here in Arkansas ticks are a part of our lives daily. We see them every day and they are virtually unavoidable here in the countryside. We use bug spray every day for this reason. I understand lyme disease is very tough and can be absolutely debilitating so my heart goes out to you. I hope you have gotten some treatment that works though I know they don't always work. Anyway, the leaves we use go through a shredding process. In the four years we have been doing this I have not seen a single tick in our leaves.

Try wisteria for your trellis, they flower twice a year and have beautiful hanging blooms 🥰
I absolutely love the look and smell of Wisteria but it’s super invasive here. I’ve been thinking about planting Akebia instead as a noninvasive alternative. We have clematis planted there right now. Thanks for the comment!
@@lordsofpondland wisteria, just cut the new growth back, you can even train them as a free standing tree but, akebia is a great choice and fruit bearing 👍🥰
@@beechamberlain8287 I actually found out today that American Wisteria is not invasive here it’s only the Asian variety. Do you find that wisteria brings in a lot of wildlife?
@@lordsofpondland bumble bees, butterflies are attracted because of the flowers, it’s a great climber, sorry it’s not good for USA climate, you just need to cut back the growth

I like the "Humanure Handbook" It is a great book that explains all about composting toilets versus dry toilets etc. It really is a nice dive into the topic.

You can harvest butane off your poop to heat the water or you can run a coil of either copper or pex pipe though a compost pile and it will heat the water to 120° F
I’ve looked into these methods a lot and you are totally right! I would have to run a heater in the biodigester in winter for several months which is an energy hog. I also decided not to do the compost method because you have to create a new pile every couple months when you pile is done composting. I decided it was too much work. I really would love to incorporate a biodigester at some point though if possible and harvest the methane off of it for cooking. I have some books on this topic in my list!

Hey there. Thanks for the comment! It is fantastic. It is spelled Bricor. They are genuinely amazing and these people put a lot of work into low flow but high pressure. We love it. They are a bit pricey but we prefer to buy something once if possible. They seem like amazing quality. Hope this helps!

Hey there. That is a real challenge. I have not really come up with a solution for this. I have tried a few things: heated wire run off of a generator with pipe wrap and draining the pipes if it is going to be below freezing for an extended period of time. Depending on where you are you could set up a system that draws water from the center of the tank. Try to put pipe underground or as much in your house or heated building as possible. Sorry I am not more help and good luck on your journey! My future plan is to have all exterior pipes buried so they dont freeze.

how dose the "first flush" system work on the rain system?
Basically it diverts the first gallon of water from the roof through a separate tube because that is the dirtiest water. Then clear water proceeds onward after that diversion tube fills up to go into the tanks
What is the shower head called? And the shower fan?
Its called a Bricor Shower head. They have a few different types. The fan is Eco fans.

It's not.
Is there any real reason the bathroom is on stilts or is it just coz it looks cool like that?
It's not on stilts but it has an undercarraige that contains the totes that hold the composted humanure.
Do you have an estimate of how much the bathroom cost to set up
I can't say exactly. A lot of the stuff we used to build it was reclaimed. Plumbing, electrical, concrete, and some other stuff was probably close to 1000 total. This doesnt include all the solar equipment and the stuff used to run the bathroom.

@@lordsofpondland I was also curious how you are handling the summer heat, if you could make an updated video it would be very appreciated, we are in Florida and it’s alway hot so i am scared of living practically outdoors
@@melissagonzalez2501 The summers are tough no doubt. This is our fourth summer but for us this has never been the end goal. We are building a small house and it should be done relatively soon so we can get out of the heat. I would recommend that when you place the tent make sure it is facing away from the afternoon sun and in the shade.

If you know how to compost properly there is no reason to separate urine from feces. The urine is vital for the high nitrogen needed in fertilizer.
It depends on your needs. I agree though, for a smaller system having urine and feces combined is ideal. Especially if you are doing the bucket method. Things are not as black and white as you say though. Feces is also a very high nitrogen item and it really depends on your goals. Urine itself can be used in more places than feces compost can without as much risk.
Mosquitoes
We almost never have mosquitos here. Lots of bats take care of it.
