Please remember to be respectful in the comments. I am a firm believer that anyone can feel any way about any subject they want but keep in mind that this is an art channel. I don't mind people bringing up embargos and leaving it at that, but this is not a political forum to trash anyone or any people group. People are generally not responsible for the actions of their government. Thank you everyone for your support and extending a little grace to your fellow artists.

Also very very important to remember trashing a government's actions is NOT trashing a people or history of people. In this day and age, we have to be VERY careful that we don't confuse the two.

I understand your passion here. I understand what you are saying. The paint company has not done anything to anyone. Besides, I was supporting an American company who was stuck with paint that they can no longer sell because of a political issue they had nothing to do with. They can't order more due to the restrictions but I'd hate for them to lose out on stock that they can't sell because of someone else's action. If they continued to support a government that was evil then I get that I would be supporting evil but I'm just supporting a fellow business owner in a bad spot. You may not agree with that but it's true.

Yep. Got full set of all their granulating colours and large quantity of their regular colours. They are under rated - perhaps some snobbery among the ‘high end’ paint lovers. There is no rule or law which states this is student; this is professional. It's all made up bullshit. Buy what you like at the least expense possible. There isn't a gd thing wrong with these paints. People forget social media people are asked by your government to push a narrative. Russia bad, Ukraine good. Even though Russia helps the USA in every war, is a democracy, buys our top two exports and we give them 200 million a year in tax payer money.
Point is, ignore these Pete and repete parrots out there. Get what you like. If it helps, I don't know a single real professional artist who uses anything other than COTMAN. Well not true. I know one plein air guy that uses white nights, but he paints abstract impressionist.

White Nights are really BAD at customer support/communication. Spectacularly bad. Also not really good at marketing (barely acceptable at it).
Some of their paints are not really good, like their ochres are mostly not recommended by artists. But on the other hand every manufacturer has good and not-so-good paints. Every one of them has its weaknesses from some point of view.
I like them and use some of them. They are good for their price and some of the granulating mixes are so cool.

Reason you struggled with getting the seperation is probably how you used your brush. If the sounds your mic picked up are correct you are digging to the paper and probably mulling the pigments in the paint :) I haven’t used these paints but White Nights watercolors really helped me get used to watercolors. They changed the formulations of some standard line colors in the past 5ish years. I can’t get the same raw sienna I loved from them anymore

I have been a member of the UA-cam art community for many years. I initially bought a 36 pan set of White Nights as my first professional set of watercolours years ago on the advice of many artists who said they were among the best value for money as a professional set. Not that they were the worst, only that they were the cheapest. They have more than tripled in price since then, but I still use them quite often, even though I now have many other more expensive brands like Daniel Smith and Schmincke.

I agree. They are among the best paints that I've used. I think people confuse less transparent with less quality. They are more on the side of semi-transparent but so are many of the highest quality paints. I don't know when that idea crept up but I've heard it for a long time.

FYI Augite porphyrite is a compound, not a single element. It’s a rock. It is a dark green to black iron- and calcium-rich pyroxene that is common in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, along with some intermediate igneous rocks. Diopside is a white to light green iron-free, calcium pyroxene that occurs in medium- to high-grade metamorphosed carbonate rocks.

38:22 these are REALLY pretty-I rarely look at, (and even less often will I purchase) any “new, AMAZING products” talked about in the You Tube watercolor space - I struggle enough simply attempting to create “good” art with the basic Daniel Smith paints I own -no one needs all THIS whimsy thrown into the mix…
The reason the paints must be used wet on wet is because in order for the granules to separate from the other pigments, they have to be able to float “apart” -thereby allowing the heavier granules to sink to the bottom and remain there, while the lighter dual colors float apart from one another and remain where they land as the water then evaporates! Granulating watercolor of all kinds will only shine in a large amount of water-and they *truly* shine on rough paper! Give it a try-you’ll thank me!😉🤣
    These paints really are stunning-!!

For me pigment index is important to check if the pigment is carcinogenic or metal. Secondly pigment index can be the same for two different colours, it is just how the pigment is being treated, like PBr7 can be heated or burn to give totally different colour than natural sienna. Granulated Colours usually refer to pigment whose particles are heavy and larger, like PY42. They tend to be more opaque than transparent. 😊 thanks for the video

The Red Mist looks similar to DS Piemontite. Btw, granulating paint loves water ... the more the better. 😊 Put some water on the paper and drop the paint in - don't stir the paint.
Also too, the DS Primateks are the actual minerals (rocks), they aren't paint mixes. I see three minerals in the WN set. Most excellent.

The piemontite genuine is definitely one of my favorite paints and it is beautiful. There was a big controversy with Daniel Smith a few years back that there are only small amounts of the minerals and then they add other pigments to help give it a little more color. I don't mind as I love the Primatek line and I always have.

    Hi, Pete!
Thank you for the review and swatches!
    Really detailed and useful.
I’m intrigued by the two red colours.
I even tried to mix something similar to paint erupting volcanoes but messed a little and had to fix everything with a lot of indigo and metallic crayons - that is how I got the skies and the flame/lava finally right.
But the mix itself was quite close in hue to these reds.
Hm… Some artists also say you can mix such colours yourself, which is true.
But I love my convenience colours.
So I’m still thinking if I should buy these two colours open stock, or if I should buy a set. Or abstain from buying because I already have so many watercolours in my collection.
As for the cobalt turquoise mist, I think it has this greenish shade because they used not the cobalt blue version of PB28, but its cobalt turquoise version 🤔

    • @IllustrationsByPete

@@crystalinedreams6039 No they are not, formulation makes a difference. I see that after I've used them. I just always heard they were on the low side of professionals. Keep your lid on. No one is saying anything bad about them here. 🙂

Their colors quality has dropped severely. They are not what they used to be.

Really?! I thought they were great. I would have loved to see them back when they were more vibrant. Now I have to go on a scavenger hunt for an old set. 🕵️

I'm sorry, sometimes I misunderstand people. I'm not sure if you are asking why they are a thing of the past or why I would spend time reviewing them. Both are valid questions , so let me answer both questions just in case. First, they are a thing of the past in our current age due to political issues and the state of the world and I understand that. I am not promoting any government or supporting any of their decisions. I do not believe the paint company itself has done anything wrong and I'd hate to blame a people as a whole for what their government does. Second, I'm just documenting my experience with art. This is an art channel and not a political one. I have heard about these paints for a long time, got my hands on them, and I'm reporting what I think about the paints themselves. They are lovely and wonderful to use. I enjoy them a lot. That's all. I'm not making any statements here other than I think the paints are very nice. I hope that answers your question. 🙂

I am stunned to learn you are supporting Russian vendors. Compare with Rosa Gallery. You will most likely find, vendors of granulating paints, who are not being sanctioned for war crimes. Pay more, pay less, it's irrelevant when you want to support and use products which are not contributing and funding hate. I really feel you might be uninformed, and will not berate you as you are truly producing informative content.

I appreciate the grace you are extending to me. I don't really know the company's history but I do know many Russians who are absolutely beautiful people and who shouldn't suffer for their government's crimes. I plan on finding the Rosa granulating paints but they are hard to find. Thank you for being kind.

I have traveled all through Russia. The average Russian isn't that different from a working class Brit or American. They want healthy children, a dry roof over their head, and food in their refrigerator. They have little ability to sway government policies, just like here in the US. DO YOU BUY MERCHANDISE FROM COMMUNIST CHINA made in slave like sweatshops? Do you get a nosebleed from sitting up so tall on your high horse?

Second this comment- anyone who says "I'm not getting involved" has not bothered to educate themselves about the companies operating in Russia. I know it's a tricky subject but a tiny bit of reading will really give a person more perspective than they may have. Most companies are getting support from the government. So many articles coming out now in all media (from all perspectives) about the fact that the Russian companies are doing quite well because the sanctions has forced Russians to buy from companies producing inside Russia. I say this having White Nights entire range from before the war started, so I'm not biased against the brand. Russia is just such a disaster.

I appreciate the gentleness with which this is being discussed and I also appreciate how passionate people are about this issue. Let's not bring horses into it, they haven't hurt anyone. Maybe we should just leave it right here while we are all still smiling artists. 🙂 I appreciate all of you and I do respect your point of view.
