An interesting point is how none of the other baby birds rejected the ugly duckling, at least not until after their parents did. I wonder what the writers were trying to say.

i always loved the ugly duckling all he needed was love and someone to see how wonderful he was it always makes me cry when noone would love him i would have loved him🙂
I'd like to think that the message of this cartoon is that no matter how different you look our how out of place you feel, there will always be someone or a group of people who will openly accept you just the way you are. It's definitely one of Disney's more heartfelt creations.

Man this was so perfectly crafted. How a cartoon put me in an emotional state. I was so relieved at the end when the swan hug him and embraced him. The sad thing is this is prevalent today 😢😢😢😢 so many kids need love. If you see a child without love and affection give it I know I do. Some kids aren't bad they need attention sadly only time they receive it is when they done something bad. Children need a balanced they need to be rewarded and also discipline. I realized the kids I loved always called for me and wantef to come over
I am 48, and I completely forgot about this cartoon until I saw it in a YT short, so I came to find the full video. I am an old ass gen x-er and this shit made me tear up. Disney literally traumatized us when we were kids, and we had no clue. Thanks for the major throwback!
I think it was more so that the mother duck was shocked that he was actually a cygnet. You can see that she had admiration for the swan and upon realising that he was one, there was probably an element of regret for treating him badly and was trying to sort of make amends. But I loved the way he turned his face and walked off, I don't take back people who treated me badly.
I think that with the water distorting the image and the plastic duckling the producers wished to convey the message that sometimes we see the evil without an actual reason.
So, how do you explain that?” “I don’t know?” “Well he’s definitely not mine!” “don’t even go there, that is definitely your son.” ( literally all I could make out X,D)
Well I am like this.... Never had any friends, was being bullied at school...Still have nobody to talk to and parents are always constantly fighting...
I love this old cartoon (1938 or 1939 I believe), one of my absolute favorites among Disney cartoon. 7:36 - Have you noticed, right _here_ there are 5 "swanlings" (our "Ugly Duckling" plus the other 4). But at the last few frames of that second, before 7:37, there are (6) *six!* And then 5 again. A small easter egg from Disney?
This makes me cry I lot, especially when he headbutts the duck buoy thinking its a new mother and starts crying when he realizes its not real. Im very sensitive and makes me feel devastated. But fortunately, 1 minute later, the swans arrive and he headbutts his new swan mom
@@eduardochernia That's part of the genious in this rather short cartoon, there are so many details, hidden or clearly visible, that all touch our emotions (and what makes it such a favorite of mine).

This society is cold hearted. Because people feel bad for the bird. But what about all the human kids that get called ugly? Nowadays, people even make posts on Facebook calling babies ugly. Society has fallen.
People are ugly and pretty. The story isn't about attractiveness, it's about the typical " It don't look like me so it ain't mine" mentality. It's about the SINGLE mom resenting the child for the immaturity of the father
I had the same reaction. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia, relatability or a combination of both. I haven't seen this since I was maybe 5 or 6 years old, so I'm not sure. In the end, I was and still am glad that the 'duckling' found his place. 😊
Imagine if they made ALSO a Donald Duck version of this. Instead of Being a Swan, the ugly duckling is Donald Duck and at the end of the cartoon he joins baby Mickey and baby Goofy and becomes famous
I used to feel so sad for that little swan when i was a child. I cried watching this after several years. ❤💔 I hope every misfit swan gets their own happy ending.
How can an eight minutes cartoon can make us cry like this. They managed to make us sad about the baby everyone pushes away and to me the saddest part is when he doesn't even try to go with the swans cause when he tried before he was rejected, and when she comes to him at first he's scared cause he only experienced violence until then
Growing up a high masking autistic and getting diagnosed after 20 feels a bit like this. Especially when you've been bullied your whole life but you never quite understood why, or what was it in you that made you such a delicious target for bullying ( both from teachers and students ) no matter how frequently you changed schools. Then you grow up and realize and you're like OH

This is diffrent from the version i saw when i was little. I think it was longer and he first met his mom again when he was all grown up and a beautiful swan. Plus i think they acrually talked... i im not sure if there was a cat or not XD And the mother actually loved him very much and was ready to die for him. It was the other ducks and animals who bullied him.
No Problem. As a man, I think it's totally okay when a man cries. We're not made of stone and we have feelings. How are you? I also think the cartoon is beautiful.
That’s what I was thinking. So that means the father duck has no children. If the mother duck cheated with a male swan that means the baby ducks are half duck and half swan
