I know someone who was an ugly duckling in real life. They were bullied, and teased by everyone while growing up. Just because they looked different, and didn't fit what was "normal". Looking at them now, this person turned so beautiful. Some stories are real...

A girl in my middle school kind of fit this mold. She was overweight and had some issues with acne in middle school, but during the summer lost a bunch of weight and found a way to clear up her skin. When we started our first year of high school she was gorgeous. What I loved about her is she was still well aware of all the people who had treated her like shit for years and when guys started noticing her she gave them the cold shoulder. It was fun to watch.

At age 30, I actually only recently got interested in the original fairytales some stories from my childhood are based on, and the history behind them, but I'm glad I did. I think it's interesting to learn why we have all these stories that we take for granted (along with the Disney counterparts for many of them), what the original source material is, and why these stories were told in the first place. It...actually makes the stories that much more interesting for me. That and the internet ruined my childhood ages ago.

Honestly, I always felt for the ugly ducking. I could relate when I was a kid. I was tall, unruly frizzy curly hair, and a chin that stuck out. My mom has straight hair so she never knew how to deal with mine. When I was in junior high I was already 5'11, and there were boys and girls that used to follow me around calling me ugly and telling me I would never get a boyfriend because of how ugly I was. Home life wasn't much better. I wasn't very good at school and had unmedicated ADHD. Homework was horrible to get through. My stepdad used to call me useless and stupid because of it. In the middle of high school I got huge boobs and I finally started growing into my facial features and it was weird to get noticed by men (not boys. Older men in their 20s had a thing for me because I was so tall.) So that caused a lot of confusion for me, and because of that I was easily manipulated. I'm 29 now and finally learned to love myself and see myself as beautiful. My husband is a wonderful man (only 3 years older than me) and we have 3 amazing kids together. I was an ugly duckling. I'll never forget that.

Sadly this thing happens quite a lot in the bird kingdom. Years ago one of our hens hatched mostly white chicks, but one was black. She HATED it and kept pecking his head. She would have killed it eventually. We didn't know what to do. My aunt even put a bit of flour on it to make it white, but no use his mom chased him even more. Grandma came with the right solution (weird, but it worked) : she gave the hen a drop of brandy. As the hen was all dizzy and mellow, we put the chick under her. She accepted the poor chick from then on.
I still have no explanation for the hen's strange rejection.

My alternate ending: He goes back to where he came from and showed everyone what he had turned into and what they rejected and abused.
The birds gazed upon the beauty that stood in front of them and begged him to live with them again.
As much as the he wanted to be in his family again, he realized all the abuse and doubt that his family gave him and that they only wanted him back because he was an elegant swan.
The swan denied their request and said,”A real family loves their own no matter what; you only give love to those that are pretty and beautiful, I don’t want to be in a family who only loves me because I’m not ugly.”
With those final words he left the bird family in to think of what they have done as he fly’s away into the unknown to live a peaceful life.

There was a popular fan theory for the show Once Upon A Time, that the main character, Emma Swan was The Ugly Duckling. Every character but her and her son Henry had a fairy tale or folk tale counter identity. The writers would say that they were only characters without one. But eventually they wrote it into the show, confirming it towards the end, because it so well. Not because she was mistreated fro being ugly, but grew up, lonely not knowing who she really was. She finds out that she's Snow White and Charming's daughter, therefore a princess but also "The Savior" everyone form her land has been waiting for. Also, throughout the course of the show she finds out who she is as a person, and always was deep down all along. That and and her last name was "Swan" after all. :)

Coming up I attended mainly Caucasian schools....I would get the questions about my behind being large, do I put Crisco in my hair, how did my eyes get light since I’m black...this is coming from students and teachers. I used to be SO ashamed about my uniform skirts being so high in the back and hanging low in the front because of my behind...I was called ugly until I became a Senior in high school... This effected me for a very long time. However, looking back in my year books etc...I was so beautiful! My hair, my skin, my eyes, my voluptuous behind...the truth was (which I found out at class reunions) they were jealous. I wore my hair different ways, I was shapely and lovely because my attitude still remained kind. I tell my daughter of these stories so she will know...My sweet one, it’s not you, it’s them. Their standard of beauty does NOT come melanated....but it’s alright...your hair, lips, eyes, thighs, behind ALL made by God and PERFECT❤️

Anderson's distinction was that he brought literacy and authorship to the tales he chose to retell. He went beyond translating old fireside folklore to the page and brought his own descriptions, characterization, & themes to the material. This sets him apart from the likes of the Grimms & Perrault. He also laced original gems like "Ugly Duckling" into the rep - furthering him as an artist rather than transcriber.
